Nehemiah

Nehemiah was called by God to end the generational reproach on Jerusalem by rebuilding the city walls. As an ordinary cup bearer, Nehemiah was moved with compassion when he heard about the state of Jerusalem, and took action. He wept and prayed fervently to God, then approached the king to receive permission and resources to travel to Jerusalem and oversee the rebuilding effort. Through Nehemiah's leadership, the walls were fully rebuilt in just 52 days. The story shows how God can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things when they are burdened for a cause, spend time in prayer, and then take action in faith.

NEHEMIAH – ENDING GENERATIONAL REPROACH

Nehemiah 2:17 (KJV)

Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the
gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be
no more a reproach.

 ANYTHING THAT HAS A BEGINNING ALSO HAS AN ENDING.

- Including family reproaches and shame

Proverbs 23:18 (KJV)

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

- The end of your family shame has come.

- That family shame is ending this morning
- Your expectations concerning your family is about to become realities

NEHEMAIAH - ORDINARY MEN WORLD CHANGERS

GOD SPECIALIZED IS USING ORDINARY MEN

Nehemiah’s Background

- Nehemiah was just a king cup-bearer, not a priest, not a prophet, not a soldier, was not a lawyer
- Little is known about his family, He was an ordinary person who heard about something that
bothered him deeply and God raised him up to be change his world in miraculous way ( only in
52 Days)
-
Nehemiah 1:1-4 (KJV)
The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the
twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

2
That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them
concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

3
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in
great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are
burned with fire.

4
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I SAT DOWN AND WEPT, AND MOURNED
CERTAIN DAYS, and FASTED, and PRAYED BEFORE THE GOD OF HEAVEN,
- The wall of Jerusalem has been down for 140 years, this was a great embarrassment to the
people of God.
- Jerusalem was left vulnerable to outside attack, they were very depressed and thought that
there was no other hope.
- This actually happed because at certain time, Israel drifted there heart to worship false gods and
idols and God allowed the Babylonians to destroy their city, and broke down their walls and also
took the people into captivity.
- Some people moved back at certain time and try to rebuild the temple so that they could
worship, but it was nothing to write about – DOESN’T BEFIT A PLACE GOD CAN BE WORSHIPPED,
the walls still broken down and vulnerable to attack, embarrassing and humiliating too.

 IT TAKES A MAN TO END GENERATIONAL REPROACH.

- Examples; Abraham, Nehemiah, Joseph, Moses, David, Jesus Christ.

- One ordinary man is enough

Ezekiel 22:30 (KJV)

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap
before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

- Jerusalem remained a reproach, until one man, a cup bearer, an ordinary man arose and said in
his heart “ SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO SOMETHING;- IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME”
- He said in his heart, I can’t take this anymore, I have to do something.
- Every now and then, there is something you look at and say “NO, I AM NOT GOING TO
TOLERATE THAT AGAIN, “ SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO SOMETHING;- IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME”

Principles of How God Uses Ordinary Men

1. GOD CAN USE YOU, WHEN YOU CAN SIT DOWN TO CRY

Nehemiah 1:4 (KJV)

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain
days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

- Nehemiah did exactly was Jesus did in

Luke 19:41 (KJV)

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

- Jesus was overwhelmed and broke down into tears when he saw that the temple has been
turned into a market place.
- What is it that break your heart on behalf of God, on behalf of God your family, on behalf of
God the nation – Insecurity, Bad governance, Poverty, etc. “ SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO
SOMETHING;- IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME”

- Don’t ignore your pains and burdens, open up your heart and God will use you
- The Burden is a sign that God has chosen to use you, you didn’t choose the burden.

2. GOD CAN USE YOU, WHEN YOU KNEEL DOWN TO PRAY

Nehemiah 1:4 (KJV)

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned
certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

- No matter how big the need is, you can it approach when you have prayed
- Prayer moves you from ordinary man to a extraordinary man (a man with God)
- Let your burden drive you into seeking God for the change you expect in your family, church,
nations, etc.
- Prayer is the game changer, take out several times to pray
- You have to pray because you need a miracle to achieve the hunger of your heart.

3. GOD CAN USE YOU, WHEN YOU STAND UP TO ACT

Nehemiah 2:1-5 (KJV)

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that
wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been
beforetime sad in his presence.

2
Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is
nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

3
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad,
when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are
consumed with fire?

4
Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of
heaven.

5
And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight,
that thou wouldest SEND ME UNTO JUDAH, UNTO THE CITY OF MY FATHERS' SEPULCHRES,
THAT I MAY BUILD IT.

- After spending enough time in prayer, Nehemiah took a bold step when the king asked him.
- Don’t just sit down to cry and pray only, act on your prayers
- He didn’t sit around to complain or send people, he said “ SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO
SOMETHING;- IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME”

By the application of these 3 principles, the walls were rebuilt in 52Days.

PRAYERS

1. FATHER MAY MY EXPECTATION ABOUT MY FAMILY, RECEIVE SPEEDY FULFILLMENT.

2. MY FATHER, EVERY YOKE OF THE DEVIL, HOLDING MY FAMILY IN SHAME, BE BROKEN BY FIRE

3. MY FATHER, AS I PRAY DELIVER ME, MY FAMILY FROM TERIBLE FORCES

4. FATHER, LET THE NEHEMIAH’S ANOITING FALL UPON ME NOW.
