Class 6 Science Work & Energy Solutions

This document contains the solutions to exercises from a 6th grade science textbook chapter on work and energy. It addresses topics like defining work and energy, the relationship between force and displacement in work, different forms of energy like light and kinetic energy, and provides examples to illustrate concepts like how applying a force does not always result in work being done. It aims to help students understand fundamental ideas around work, energy, and their interconnection through examples, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, and short answer questions.

D. ANSWER IN BRIEF

1) a. WORK :- it is said to be done only when a object moves in the direction of

force applied on it.
b. ENERGY:- it is the capacity to do work

2) The work done by a force depends on two factors-

a. Amount of force applied
b. Displacement produced by applied force

3) Light energy, sound energy, heat energy

4) a. Kinetic energy
b. Potential energy
c. Potential energy
d. Kinetic energy

5) Uses of light energy are-

a. It enable us to see things
b. Light energy, of the sun, is used by green plants to make their food

E. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING-

1) Yes, applying a force and doing work are different.

Applying a force states a push or pull, which may or may not results in
displacement of object by applied force.
Doing work states displacement of object in the direction of the force applied on
it.
Therefore, it is not necessary that applying a force always results in ding work.

2) When a force is applied on an object it can results in movement of that object and
then, work is done.
That's why, work=force*distance.
Example: Suppose a vehicle starts moving, when it moves, it travel some distance
due to the force applied on it. In this way, work is done by a moving vehicle.

3) No, he has not done any work, as work is only done when a force is applied and
displacement takes. In the given situation, displacement does not take place as a suitcase
doesn’t move therefore no work is done.

4) Energy is the capacity to do work.

Activity to show the inter-relationship between work and energy
Let us boil some water in a container covered with a (light) lid and observe what happens
to the lid. The lid is seen to move up and down. The steam formed due to heat, makes the
lid move up and down. It shows that heat is a form of energy which can be used to move
objects (work done). Hence there is a inter-relationship between work and energy.

5) (a) TUBELIGHT, CFL

(b) MICROPHONE
(c) DRY CELL, BATTERY
