November 2023
RE: GRADE 8
This letter details some of the down-to-earth practicalities for you and your son as he prepares for high
school and sets out on that path in January 2024.
1.1 Uniforms
Most primary schools have a summer and winter uniform, but in our climate we feel this is unnecessary,
apart from being very expensive. We therefore have only one uniform and during very hot days the
boys are permitted to remove their blazers on the College premises. A meeting of parents some years
ago did in fact examine the feasibility of incorporating an adaptation of the uniform for the summer
months, but they eventually voted overwhelmingly in favour of retaining the status quo.
Please help us by ensuring that your son adheres to the requirements in every respect.
1.2 Stationery
A letter indicating stationery requirements is enclosed and is available on the D6 Communicator and
the Webpage.
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their sons have all the stationery items for their subjects by
the first day of school next year.
1.3 Textbooks
A letter indicating textbooks requirements is enclosed – Please ensure that you have a copy of the
proof of payment before collecting text books.
1.4 Bookbags
The College accepts the Backpack type bag for the carrying of books. However, these bags must be
plain black.
Please ensure also that your son does not write anything other than his name on the bag: cartoons,
logos, etc., are not permitted and nor are multi-coloured 'surfer' bags or tog bags acceptable. Sports
Tour bags will also not be permitted.
Such bags can be purchased at our official stockists, Kingons and Strand Outfitters as well as most retail
stores.
Though the first full school day is Wednesday, 17 January 2024, please arrange for your son to be at
school on Tuesday, 16 January at 14:00. The grade 8 learners can feel completely lost on the first day,
therefore I would like them to meet the boys the day before so that they can be sorted into classes,
meet their class teachers, be shown around the school by the prefects and generally be given some
details about their routine before the term actually starts.
Please note the following arrangements:
The academic day concludes at 14:30 each day except for Wednesdays when the closing time is 13:30
and on some Fridays when we follow a “short Friday” time. Closing time on these Fridays is at 12:30 or
13:30. Advice of a “short Friday” is generally found in the Quarterly Diary that each boy receives or on
our Social Media platforms such as the D6 or the Calendar on the webpage.
Extra-mural activities will end between 16:00 and 17:00, depending on the day and the sport to which
your son has committed himself.
Summer sport practices are likely to start on the first day of school (Wednesday, 17 January 2024).
All grade eight boys will be involved in a fun, one-hour athletics meeting on Thursday, 18 January from
15:00 to 16:00. Thereafter they will follow a programme supervised by the prefects which will include a
sausage braai at the swimming pool and a sleepover in the Emslie Centre. Boys will be given details of
this event when they meet their class teachers on Tuesday, 16 January.
By this stage you have learnt a considerable amount about the College, the opportunities it offers, and
also the demands it makes on its pupils and parents, but I would like to expand on one or two points.
Please note that initiation is not allowed at Selborne. However, as part of their integration into the life
and ways of the School it will be expected of all newcomers that they:
3.1.1 Learn the College war-cry, supporters' songs and attend sing-song practices, etc. (usually at
break times).
3.1.2 Write the Prefects’ test on the history, routine and rules of the School (This does not entail a large
amount of time or preparation, and does not interfere with normal studies).
2|Page
3.1.3 Attend the home derby fixtures to support both the first hockey and rugby teams (about six
Friday and Saturday afternoons respectively during the year).
3.1.4 Assist with service activities (e.g. taking responsibility for flags, water, cold drinks, etc.) when the
College hosts visiting sports teams: each boy will have only two or three turns at this during the
year.
All pupils in the School are expected to give their full support to the following functions which may take
place after hours, in each year that they are at Selborne:
3.2.1 Participate in inter-house activities arranged for them, mainly in the first and third terms.
3.2.2 Attend the College swimming gala Monday, 18th February).
3.2.3 Participation in an endurance hike (Tuesday, 6th August).
3.2.4 Attendance at the inter-house athletics meeting (Wednesday, 14th August).
3.2.5 Attendance at Prize-Giving (Thursday, 3rd October).
3.2.6 Participate in Founders' Day activities (all day on Friday, 11th October, ending at + 17:30 p.m.)
These activities are all important ones on our calendar, and participation should in no way be seen as
an imposition, but part of an attempt to broaden the scope of our educational aims, and to provide for
healthy and enjoyable participation and integration.
4. PARENTAL INFORMATION
For those of you having sons coming to high school for the first time there is sometimes anxiety. A short
meeting for all grade eight parents, at 17:30 on Friday, 19 January 2024, in the College Hall, is therefore
planned in order to prepare you for a boy's life at high school. I hope that you will make every effort to
attend since it could help you to clear your thoughts and assist your son with some of the difficulties of
transition from primary school to high school.
At the conclusion of this meeting the PTA executive invites you to stay for a while so that you may meet
them and perhaps get to know some of your fellow “new parents” a little better. They have kindly
offered to organise a cheese and wine cocktail party. Please indicate on the reply slip whether you will
attend this function. Your son should bring this slip to school with him on Tuesday, 16 January and hand
it to his class teacher.
4.1 Communication
Monday is Notice Day. Should there be a need to communicate with parents generally our practice is
to send notices home with the boys on a Monday. In most cases reply slips confirming receipt of such
notices are attached and we expect the boys to return these to their class teachers on Tuesday
morning.
Once installed, D6 will open automatically on your desktop each morning, or when you turn on your
computer for the first time each day. The software for D6 can be downloaded from the D6 website
(http://www.school-communicator.com/download.php)
The Fathers’ Supporters group is also very active and the assistance given by both groups of parents is
invaluable to the school and the boys do appreciate it.

5. APPOINTMENTS
The Headmaster prefers to see parents on an 'appointment' basis, since this enables him to prepare
himself adequately by consulting all those teachers who have had contact with your son before your
visit. He sets aside most afternoons for this and you are very welcome to telephone the office to fix a
mutually convenient time. Should anything of an urgent nature transpire, though, please do not
hesitate to approach him immediately for an interview at any time.
6. SCHOOL FEES
A letter regarding the school fees for 2024 is enclosed.
7. SECURITY
Sadly, security is a huge problem in modern society and schools have not escaped unscathed. The
College is a very public place and passers-by have been found pilfering on many occasions. To try and
assist you and your sons we have made a limited number of lockers available to the boys. These can
be ‘purchased’ on a “first come first served” basis for a year upon payment of R100,00 per year. If you
would like to make use of the facility, please approach the office in this regard. A spare key needs to
be left at the office. At each year end, lockers are to be emptied and left open. The school also has a
baggage room in which kitbags and equipment must be locked during school hours. The campus has
also recently been fitted with CCTV Camera’s to assist in the security and safety of all.
10. CONTACT
In order to help us ensure that contact is indeed taking place, kindly ensure that when we send you a
circular, please sign the reply slip and return it to the school per your son immediately.
11. CONCLUSION
Please keep handy the checklist overleaf. I trust this information, together with that to be disseminated
in the first week of term, will ease your son's preparation for and transition to high school, and that you,
and he, will have a very happy association with the College.
Yours sincerely
MR A.C. DEWAR

November 2023
We ask all parents to respect the school year and to avoid making arrangements that take the boys
away from the school during term time. When it becomes unavoidable for your son to miss school time
please follow the procedures below.
1. Please give as much warning as possible. Timeous notice enables staff to make the
necessary arrangements that ensure that work missed by your son is easily caught up again.
2. Should it be necessary for your son to miss only part of a school day the request should be
directed (in writing) to his Grade Tutor in advance and not on the day. Please, where
possible, make any Learners, Drivers, Physio, Doctor or Dentist appointments after school.
3. Should your son need to miss a day or more your written request should be directed to the
Headmaster’s office timeously – [email protected]
4. If a boy needs to be away from school at the end of a term, a request in this regard should
be directed to the Headmaster at least one week before the close of school. Normal
schooling activities during this final week and Language exams have been scheduled. A
formal Quarterly Awards Assembly also takes place during that final week of term. Please
avoid, at all cost, being away during the last week of term !
MR A.C. DEWAR
HEADMASTER
November 2023
At Selborne College we value our traditions and therefore, as part of the integration
and orientation of all Grade 8 learners into the College we remove all ties from the
“new boys” on the first day of school.
The ties are marked and kept by the Headmaster, and will be returned to the boys
once they have passed their Integration test. The entire process lasts approximately
two weeks.
The purpose of this practice is to get the “new boys” to earn their “spurs” at the
College by learning about the school’s History and traditions and then receiving the
privilege of being able to wear their ties proudly.
I hope that you and your son enjoy your time at the College and that your son
develops into a proud independent and disciplined young man and Selbornian.

November 2023
Dear Parents
This information sheet is to advise you of the counselling services available at the College. While the
services have been formalised for a long time, we felt it a good idea to make sure that the Selborne
Family is aware of what is in place.
1. Vocational Guidance and Counselling – Senior Boys
Mr Steve Grant has overall responsibility for the Grade 12 and 11 groups. Apart from arranging for
selected universities and businesses to visit the Campus and talk to the boys during Life Skills periods,
or break times, the major focus is on individual interviews with Mr Grant. Boys book 30-minute
sessions with him during school time where a range of careers and learning institutions are discussed.
The sessions are frank and honest with boys coming to terms with real rather than dream career
choices. In some cases, the concept of a gap year is also considered. Most boys then need to do
their own internet/literature research and come back for a follow up chat. Parents are welcome to
contact Mr Grant to discuss their son’s progress in making decisions about life after school. It should
be stressed that it is the boys’ responsibility to contact Mr Grant.
Mr Grant is a qualified careers guidance teacher who has the additional responsibility for
integrating careers guidance into the overall Life Orientation curriculum at Selborne.
2. Academic Counselling
Senior staff members are used to help boys in Grade 9 make their subject choices for Grade 10.
Preparation for subject choice has also been included in our grade 9 Life Orientation curriculum.
You will get detailed information on this during the Grade 9 year.
3. General Counselling for Boys
If the staff, through our communication structures, become aware of a boy who is unhappy for
whatever reason, we can access the services of Mr Steven Grant who has years of experience in
School Guidance Counselling as well as Mrs Heidi Breetzke who is a registered Counsellor. In the
event that further professional assistance is required then a referral would be recommended by the
School. We would of course discuss this with you through the Grade Tutor or Class Teacher of your
son before any referral is made. Parents are welcome to set up appointments with Mr Grant and Mrs
Breetzke themselves. The appointment can be made by contacting the General Office on (043) 722
1822. Should there be a problem of substance abuse or with family dynamics we have good
contacts and we would be happy to help boys and or parents make the necessary connections.
Please contact the headmaster (on 043 722 1822) for help in this regard.
We do care for our boys, and wanted you to know that our approach to their well-being is properly
structured. Of course there are always special relationships between boys and teachers and problems
are often resolved in an informal way where there is mutual trust and respect.
Yours faithfully
MR A.C. DEWAR
HEADMASTER
August 2023
Your child is invited to participate in our excellent Grade 8 Smart Start programme.
AdMaths is an extra subject and not an extra class in school mathematics. The aim of the subject is to
stimulate and enrich a learner, who is already performing well in Mathematics, by augmenting the
school syllabus to stimulate and enrich. Mathematical concepts are learnt ahead of their time. This
makes learners sharper and they grasp concepts quicker. The subject places Mathematics in
perspective and widens horizons.
AdMaths reserves the right to close the class of a Gold service of which the number of learners has
become too few to operate viably.
We also offer AdPhysics and AdAccounting from Grade 10. These subjects are intellectual
investments of which the benefits are far more than merely the content that provides a head-start at
university.
Kind regards

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
At the College, qualified members of staff are available for instruction in pianoforte, woodwind,
brass and singing. Music is offered as an exam subject in Grades 10, 11 and 12. The Creative
Arts curriculum takes the place of subject music in grades 8 and 9. Learners who wish to study
music as a subject from Grade 10 onwards are advised to attend extra-curricular lessons – we
will be happy to advise and assist.
Learners are also entered for external examinations such as those of the Royal Schools and Trinity
Guildhall. For those not keen on taking music as part of their curriculum, but nevertheless
interested in playing an instrument, music may be taken as an extra-curricular activity. The
College also has a Concert Band and Marimba Band which provides learners with opportunities
to participate in group work while learning to play their instrument.
The Cadet, Concert Bands, Marimba Band and Choir are open to any boys in the school and
not merely to those taking music. Some of the Concert Band instruments are easy to cope with
and a little perseverance is all that is needed to make sufficient progress for participation to
become a pleasure. Even if your son has never played an instrument before, he may begin at
the College if there is place in the time-table.
I hope that you will encourage your son to take advantage of the Musical opportunities
provided.
Yours sincerely

The Enrichment Fund assists boys seeking a subsidy to participate in a tournament, tour, festival,
competition or event where he will represent Selborne. To remain competitive and on the cutting edge,
Selbornians need to travel increasingly longer distances to compete in both sporting and cultural events.
This puts strain on budgets that are, for some parents and the general community at large, already stretched
to the limit.
The MySchool card is free and all you need to do to help raise funds for the Enrichment Fund is to swipe your
MySchool card at participating stores such as Woolworths, Wimpy etc. Best of all, it doesn’t cost you a
cent!!! To apply for a MySchool card or to change the current beneficiary to Selborne, please complete the

Dear Moms
On behalf of the mothers of Selborne College we wish to extend a warm welcome to you and your son.
We invite and encourage you to become part of the incredible team of mothers that make up the
Mother’s Committee. The Mother’s Committee continues to provide support, an invaluable source of
information and encouragement for many mothers.
The mothers of Selborne College form an integral part of the support structure of the school and are
involved in various activities ranging from praying for our school; arranging flowers; working at derby days,
sporting and cultural events; facilitating teas; providing a school clothing service and serving the boys in
the all-important school tuckshop. Without the support of our mothers, these areas would not function
optimally and this directly impacts on the experience your sons enjoy at Selborne College.
With many of us being working moms, the measure in which you get involved and the time you spend at
school events depends entirely on you, but any contribution is greatly appreciated by both the school
and your sons.
We encourage you to review the list of sports and cultural activities with your son and identify his areas of
interest and where you as a Mom can get involved. Please indicate on the attached reply slip where you
may be able to assist.
No doubt, both you and your son are starting to feel apprehensive at the prospect of starting a new
school with new systems. I can assure you that as a new mom, networking with other fellow moms has
proved invaluable in navigating the first year through High School and getting to grips with all the new
systems and structures. I really encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to network with other
moms of Selborne College during the year.
Please save the date for our Mothers’ Cocktail Evening on Wednesday, 24 January 2024 at 17h30 in the
Selborne Arms (Tuckshop) and kindly reply via the GOOGLE FORM LINK:

Wishing you and your family a Blessed Festive Season and look forward to welcoming you next year as
you embark on this new and exciting adventure of being part of the Selborne Family.
Yours faithfully
MRS L HOUNSELL
