Learning Objectives
 The tutor desires following objectives from this
lesson:
 1. Improvement in reading , comprehending and
recognizing theme of content
 2. Organization of important ideas and supporting
ideas
 3. learning to record and conserve the information
in one’s own language
 4. Exercising the skill of condensing and linking
content
 5. Learning the grammatical concepts for bridging
statements and briefing the records like using
complex clauses , conjunctions etc.
Specific Objectives
 1. Improving Reading skill
 2. Coherent use of intensive and extensive reading
 3.Concentrate on fundamental issues in a content
and divide it into convenient division
 4. Speedy and quick noting down of ideas
 5. Learning to write with symbols and
abbreviations
 6. Learning to summarize the text that is easy to
remind and recollect.
 7. Attempting note making and summarizing
efficiently.
Methodology

 Step-I: Pupils will be informed about the topic


with the help of some A-V clips secured from
reliable resources .
 Step-II: A detailed explanation and procedure
of Note-Making will be taken up.
 Step-III: Worksheet with both solved and
unsolved Reading material will be supplied to
the students for practice.

What is Note-Making?
Note Making is a way of recording important
details from a source. This source can be any
book, article, meeting or any oral discussion.
In note making, the writer records the essence
of the information. It helps us to understand
and clarify thinking. Note making saves a lot
of time by going through the notes made. One
can get a glimpse of a lot of information from
a short note.
Why is Note Making necessary?
 It is an organization of main points for future use
 Note making helps in keeping the information handy
whenever we require
 It helps in recollecting and recalling the past events said
or heard
 It helps in concentrating, understanding and provides a
permanent record
 Note making format helps a writer to go through bulky
documents quicker
 It helps in understanding a material if the notes are in
own words
 It distinguishes between main points and details
Structure and Organization of Note
Making
 Read the passage and understand the gist
 Look for allied ideas and think for their common
heading
 Main division can be based on different
paragraphs or similar ideas
 Indication of main idea, sub idea and supporting
ideas can be done as following numbering system:
Heading: 1,2,3,4,5 A,B,C,D,E 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4

SubHead: a,b,c,d (i),(ii),(iii),(iv) 1.11,1.12,1.13


Structure and Organization of Note
Making
 Abbreviate key terms and words to save time and
ensure brevity
 Use symbols wherever appropriate and convenient .

(Note: In Examination use only recognizable and standard


symbols)
 Append a key to these symbols and abbreviations to
the answer
 Make an effective use of space and indent your notes
for good expression
 Always write a heading or title to your notes . Title
should be brief and precise and should not necessarily
found in opening or closing of the passage
Tips for good Note-Making
 Avoid using long sentences as heading or title
 Never lose the main idea of the passage
 Ignore information which is less important
 Be brief, clear, and specific
 Use logical sequencing
 Use proper indention
 Leave no spaces to avoid confusion
 Do not include your own version or
understandings
 Use abbreviations
Layout of Notes
 Title
 1. First Major Idea (Main heading)
 1.1. First supporting
 1.2 . Second Supporting Idea (Sub-heading)
 1.3. Third Supporting idea
1.3.1. First minor supporting idea
1.3.2. Second minor supporting idea(Sub-sub heading
1.3.3 . Third minor supporting idea
( Leave a line after each point)
Similarly second ,third and consecutive points can be
represented.
Condensing the text and Providing A
Key
 The art of note making is incomplete without condensing words
or phrases. These are some words and symbols used as
abbreviations while making notes:
 United States of America: USA
 Doctor: Dr.
 That is : i.e.
 Namely: viz
 Government: govt.
Box for Key, to
 And: & be made on the
 For example: e.g. right side of the
 / =or notes.
 + = in addition to
 % =percent
 27 kilograms= 27 kg
 12 meters= 12 m
How to Summarize?
 For writing summary take ideas from notes
you have prepared
 Rely on straight forward statement of ideas,
carefully leaving out examples and quotations
 Do not add any information, interpretation or
comment of your own to the summary.
 Write the summery in single connected
paragraph of 80-100 words and not in the form
of bulleted points.
Assessment meter
 For note-Making, marks are calculated and
divided as follows (as per Rationalized
Syllabus)
 Title: 1 marks
 Numbering and indenting:1marks
 Notes: 2 marks
 Key: 1 mark
 Summary: 3 ( 1.5- content, 1.5- Expression)
 TOTAL-8 marks
