BATTLE OF BADR( REASONS FOR THE BATTLE)

- The battle of badr was fought on 13th of march 624 A.D
- Muslims immigrant were prevented from leaving Makkah to Madinah for a period of ten
years
- Those who succeeded in leaving Makkah were intercepted by the Quraysh, harassed and
had their properties confiscated
- Those who succeeded in reaching Madina left their families and properties. The
properties were confiscated by the Quraysh
- Therefore when the Muslims heard about a caravan of the Quraysh returning from sham;
they wanted , without success to intercept it in lieu of their property in Makkah
- When the Quraysh learnt about the intention of the Muslims, they organized a big army
and went to protect their caravan
- Even after learning that their caravan had reached Makkah safely. They insisted on
fighting the Muslims.
- When the prophet heard about the presence of the Quraysh army he prepared an army of
about three hundred and thirteen with inferior weapons and came out at the Quraysh.

backing the watering place to prevent the Quraysh from using it
- When the Quraysh arrived, they line up their army facing the Muslims
- The battled started with dual combat by individuals from both side
- The three individuals from the Muslim side slayed their Quraysh counter parts
- A free – for – all fight started between the two parts
- The few Muslims soldier (313) defeated the large army of the Quraysh (over 1000)
- Among the Quraysh who were killed at badr was Abu – Jahl (Abi lahab) the prophets
uncle
- Many Quraysh were captured by the Muslims as prisoners.

EFFECT OF BATTLE OF BADR

-The defeat of the Quraysh had sent signal to other tribes who underestimated the strength of the
Muslims
-The Quraysh were humiliated by being defeated by the smaller number of Muslims that were
strengthened
- The battle damaged Meccan trade.
- It boosted the morale of the Muslims.
- The prestige of the battle in Islamic consciousness is marked by the fact that it’s the only battle
whose name was mentioned in the Quran.
WEEK 2
TOPIC: SURATUL KAWTHAR(ABUNDANCE OF GOOD)
REFERENCE Bk. Islamic studies for JS1 by Ari Don Balogun pg. 65

TRANSLATION OF SURATUL KAWTHAR

In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the most merciful
1. Verily ,we have given you (O Muhammad) abundance of good
2. Therefore, turn in prayer to your lord and sacrifice
3. For he who hates you, will be cut off (from every good thing in the world and in the
hereafter)

COMMENT ON SURATUL KAWTHAR

The surah contains three verses. It’s the Quran chapter 108. The unbelievers of Makkah did so
many things to condemn the holy prophet because of His beliefs. When the second son of the
prophet died, the unbelievers felt happy that the death of his son meant the end of every thing for
him and that Islam would later perish.
To prove the unbelievers wrong, Allah told the prophet that what remained with him were more
than what he lost through the death of his son. Such things which were offered as Abundance,
included knowledge, wisdom, everlasting honour and other forms of blessings.
According to the Hadith of the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said : Al-Kawthar; "It is a stream in
Heaven, whiter than milk, more clear than a goblet (of crystal) with dome-shaped ornaments
from pearls and rubies...”

However, all the divine gifts granted to the holy Prophet (S) in all aspects, even the victories
in his expeditions against his enemies, and the scholars of his followers in the Muslim
community, who guard the burning torch of Islam and Qur'an, in every period and age, and
carry it throughout the world, all in all are involved in this 'abundance of good'.

LESSONS FROM SURATUL KAWTHAR

1. Allah promised the prophet the triumph of Islam over all religions
2. The surah teaches that praying to Allah and sacrificing our lives for the good of humanity
are the requirements for gaining the abundance of good mentioned in this surah
3. It was revealed as a result of the actions of Al-asban, wail, Abu jahl and other unbelievers
who rejoiced at the death of Muhammad’s son
4. Therefore, in recognition of Allah’s favour to the prophet, he is asked to pray to God and
sacrifice
5. Muslims should worship and make sacrifice in gratitude to Allah

TOPIC: HADITH 5 OF AN-NAWAWI
REFERENCE BOOK: Islamic studies for JSS1 by Ari-Doi Balogun pg. 58-59
TRANSLATION OF HADITH NO 5
On the authority of mother of the faithful, mother of Abdullahi, (may Allah be pleased with her)
she said,
‘The prophet said: “Whoever introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. Islam) anything that is not
part of it, will have such thing rejected for him”
It was related by Bukhari and Muslim. In another hadith related by Muslim (it is stated that)
“Whoever does any work which is not in line with our affairs (i.e. which is not based on teaching
of Islam) it will be rejected for him”

COMMENT ON HADITH 5

There are two types of innovations; they are;

b. Prohibition actions

OBJECTIONABLE INNOVATIONS: are practices which should not be performed or

encouraged by any Muslim. Examples
1. Drumming and dancing on Eid and from Eid praying ground during Idil-fitri or Idil-kabir
2. Speaking or singing while you are in the bathroom or the toilet
3. Any innovation which contradicts the teaching of Islam is not accepted
4. Any innovation in the observance of the teaching of Islam is called objectionable
innovation

PROHIBITED ACTIONS; are practices which a Muslim must avoid completely;

Examples are;
1. Operating a hotel where alcoholic drinks are served or renting out a house to prostitutes

4. Any innovation in the observance of the teaching of Islam is called objectionable innovation
WEEK FOUR
TOPIC: HADITH 6 OF AN-NAWAWI
REFERENCE BOOK: Islamic studies for JSS1 by Ari-Doi Balogun pgs. 66-67
Translation of the hadith no 6 of an nawawi
From Abu Abdullahi Nu’man son of Bashir may Allah be pleased with the two of them.
He said I heard the messenger of Allah saying, verily what is lawful is obvious and what is
unlawful is obvious but between the two are matters which are ambiguous and which are
unknown to most people. He who avoids ambiguities protects his religion and his fame. And he
who falls in ambiguities may fall in what is prohibited, like a shepherd draws near to a reserve
and is about to enter it with his cattle. Verily every king has his own reserve, and Allah’s reserve
is His prohibitions. There is indeed a lump of flesh in the body, if it is sound the whole body is
sound as well if it decays the whole body decay as well- it is indeed the heart

COMMENTARIES ON THE HADITH 6

The Hadith is very broad, it covers a large portion of the Islamic law(Shariah) imam An-nawawi
and many scholars consider this Hadith one of four of five Ahadith around which the religion is
understood. This Hadith indicates matters of three types Halal, Haram and subhat ( lawful,
unlawful and doubtful)
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAWFUL, UNLAWFUL AND DOUBTFUL
LAWFUL THINGS :such things that Muslims are commanded to do and whoever does them is
rewarded by Allah.
UNLAWFUL THINGS : such things that Muslims must keep away from to avoid the
punishment of Allah.
DOUBTFUL THINGS;
Anything on which the Shari’ah is silent as to whether it is lawful or unlawful falls into the
category of doubtful things
LESSONS CONTAINED IN THE HADITH
1. Man has freedom of choice, he can therefore decide to do or not to do one thing or the other
2. Keep away from anything on which you exercise doubt
3. Let your soul be in a purified state.

WEEK SIX
TOPIC: HIJRAH: (HOLY MIGRATION)
REFERENCE BOOK : Islamic studies for JS1 by ARI-DOI Balogun Pgs 54-55

CIRCUMSTANCE THAT LED TO THE HIJRAH

During the second pledge of Aqabah, the Yathribites invited the prophet and the Muslims to
emigrate to Yathrib. This was as a result of persecution of the Muslims that was on the increase.
Therefore the prophet (SAW) asked the Muslims to migrate to Yathrib.
The Meccans tried to prevent the Muslims from leaving Makkah, while some Muslims reached
Yathrib safely, others were stopped on the way and sent back to Makkah. Some were even
subjected to harsh persecution.
When the Meccans saw that the Muslims has deserted Makkah, they became angry. They
decided that the prophet should be murdered by a group representing all the clans of the
Quraysh. Allah informed the Prophet of their plots. He was commanded to migrate to Yathrib.
He therefore informed his close friend Abubakr who was to accompany him on the Hijrah.
The term Hijrah means to emigrate from the land of unbelief to a land where complete freedom
of worship is granted
DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE HIJRAH OCCURRED
The prophet and his companion, Abu-Bakr sneaked out of the city of Makkah in the third quarter
of the night of June of the year 622 C.E. The assassins were sent to sleep by Allah so that they
could not see the prophet. The prophet and Abu-Bakr entered a cave called Gar Hirah at outskirts
of Makkah. The Meccans discovered the following morning that the prophet had escaped. They
checked the prophets household and found Ali ibn Abi Talib in the prophets bed instead. They
therefore hastened to intercept the prophet and Abu Bakr. The search took them to the cave, they
found a shrub at the mouth of the cave, a dove’s nest and eggs and spider’s webs. The presence
of these undisturbed things convinced them that the prophet could not be found, the Meccans
announced a reward of one hundred camels for everyone who could bring them back dead or
alive. The prophet and Abu bakr escaped successfully with the help of Allah
HOW THE PROPHET AND THE MUSLIMS WERE RECEIVED IN MADINAH
The prophet and Abu-Bakr continued with their journey to Yathrib(Medinah). They stopped over
at Quba. Some people met him there. During the three days stay, the prophet laid the foundation
of the first mosque in Islam. He left Quba for Yathrib on a Friday and reached Yathrib the same
day. He was met by jubilating Yathribites. They sang songs of welcome to the prophet. The
Muslims (Muhajiruns) were welcomed by the ansawr ( helpers / the people of yathrib) with
everything they had , from sharing their houses , farm lands , businesses, wifes and their
belongings with the Muslims.
WEEK EIGHT
TOPIC: CONQUEST OF MAKKAH
REFERENCE BOOK: Exam focus by Iraq Oloyede pg. 185

THE CAUSES OF THE CONQUEST OF MAKKAH

1. In March 628 C.E the prophet went together with many Muslims to perform pilgrimage,
they were however, turned back by the Quraysh
2. A treaty was signed between the prophet (S.A.W) and the Quraysh
3. One of the agreements was that war should be stopped between the Prophet and Quraysh
for 10 years.
4. The treaty however stated that any Muslim who was willing to join the Quraysh should
be allowed while Muslims should not allow Quraysh who were willing to join Islam.
5. The treaty (known as the treaty of Hudaybiyyah) gave the Muslims the opportunity to
propagate Islam unhindered by the Quraysh
6. The Quraysh however, broke the treaty by helping a friendly clan of theirs against the
friendly clan of the Muslim. This therefore justifies the Muslims attack on Makkah.
7. Therefore, the prophet rode ahead of a 10,000 strong force and captured Makkah
8. Only very few people were killed during the conquest (known as the conquest of
Makkah)

THE EFFECTS OF CONQUEST OF MAKKAH

1. The prophet entered Mecca peacefully thus the Prophet of peace granted amnesty of total
freedom and absolute pardon to those who persecuted him for thirteen years
2. The amnesty granted to the Meccans impressed them so much that they reacted by
embracing Islam unanimously. All the oppositions vanished. The teaching of Islam went
deep into Meccans hearts
3. The Apostle of Allah directed that all the idols inside the sacred house of Ka’aba should
be destroyed. A total of 360 idols were pulled down

LESSONS FROM CONQUEST OF MAKKAH

1. Muslims should honor agreement and treaties.
2. Having a good and proper planning for all task which one wants to do
3. Muslims should exercise forgiveness
4. Develop tolerance towards the people of other religions
5. Muslims should exercise patience because it pays
WEEK NINE

REFERENCE BOOKS: Islamic studies for JSS1 by ARI-DOI Balogun Pgs . 34-35
: HUMAN RELATIONS IN ISLAM (greetings & response)
The term human relations means how to live peacefully with fellow human beings. In
order to achieve this, there must be a mutual understanding and respect for one another. This can
be demonstrated by the way we greet each other, and also by the response we give to the greeting
Greeting in Islam is expressed with the use of words. There is a short form of greeting as well as
long form of greeting. There is a short form of reply as well as long form. The short form of
greeting is assalamu alaikun while the long form is assalamu alaikun warahmatullah wa
barakatu. In responding the short form is wa alaikun salaamwa rahmatullah. While the long
form is wa alaykun salam waramatullah, wabarakatutu.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GREETINGS

Greeting and response are very important in Islam. In a popular hadith, prophet Muhammad
(S.A.W) indicated that assalamu is one of the name of Allah which he placed on the earth.
Muslims should spread it.
Some importance of greetings includes
