CHAPTER 8:- SELF_RELIANCE
• Self –reliance is a trust on one self (being able to rely on yourself). Self –reliance is a situation in
which individual (group) or nations depend on their needs and to make one’s own good way of
life.
• Self –reliance is to depend on your own ability to do something. Self-reliance does not show
absolute independence because we always need to help each other in many ways. You have to
know your good qualities to be a self-reliant person. You also have to know your weak side so as
to try to solve it.
• No one or nation can exclusively rely on one’s own recourse, knowledge and skill to satisfy the
basic needs.
• Self- reliance means depending on your own ability at least to satisfy the basic needs.
• Self-reliance does not show complete independence. We can help each other without developing
dependency.
• Self – knowledge and self-respect are important conditions to develop self-reliance.
• Self – knowledge means knowing your qualities, capacities limitations and interests. It helps you
to make good choice when you are going to make decisions.
• You need to respect yourself but you have to respect others and their work too. You may not like
the people you work with but you have to tolerate them, so that you can work in harmony
Independency manifested in:
• Emotional independence: having free and strong feeling about something /body.
• Social independence: exercise self-direction in matter of social life. Self –directed think and
make decision based on their personal interest. Social independent does not mean selfish.
• Economic independence: earning sufficient income to meet one’s financial needs.
Attributes of self –reliance:
1. Decision making: is the act of making a choice on a certain issue/action.
Factors influencing decision
• Internal factors: related with the personality of the person, lack of self-awareness, self –
confidence
• External factors: related with thing around you and came from external influences like media
family, friends, peer pressure.
Decision-making is the study of identifying and choosing alternatives based on the values and
preferences of the decision maker.
Decision making steps:
• Know why you need to make a decision. Identify the problem you want to solve, and then think
of the way to solve it.
• Write down different possible ways of solving the problem. Think of possible solutions.
• Try to see the outcome of each choice, and identify the advantages and possible disadvantages of
each option.
• Choose the best alternative that matches your goal.
• Put your decision into action.
• Evaluate the outcome of your decision
Way of resisting pressure
• Self- knowledge: is a state of knowledge about one self
• Assertiveness: is the ability to make one’s own decision and carry out with confidence.
2. Self –confidence: and essential parts of self –reliance
3. Self –awareness: it is a self –concept
4. Self- direction: is also self determination
5. Self –esteem: is a very deep value that you give for yourself.
• Self-esteem is important to be self-reliant. Self- respect is important to be self-reliant. Self-
respect is the value you give to yourself.
• Good self –esteem would make you self-confident. This will help you to do many things
successfully. In the absence of self-esteem you could end up being independent.
Harmonious relationship with others
• Criticism: is an act, often verbal, pointing out of faults or judging merits of some one.
• Self –criticism is very important for the development of yours character& work
6. Open –mindedness and civility
• open –mindedness is the quality of accommodation diverse views and practice
• civility is the act of politeness towards others
7. Defending one’s point of view rationally
8. Flexibility and being accommodative
9. Accepting responsibility and majority decision
Dependency
• Dependency is a belief that persons or groups cannot solve their own problems without outside
help. We need to help each other. But when we help someone, it has to be in the way that makes
them self-reliant.
• It is a form of an apathy and a state of always accepting the support/ help of others to fulfill their
own needs,
• It is on excessive reliance on other skill, knowledge, potential, resource, economy to solve one’s
own problem even if it is not beyond him.
• Dependency is a habit that weakens your ability to stand by your own for your survival.
• Dependency commonly express by relies on external support permanently.
• Food aid may help people temporarily but it does not make them self-reliant.
• Self-esteem is the value which you give to yourself.
• Self-confidence is important to fight against dependency
Attributes of dependency:
1.Lack of social mindedness:
2.Absence of dependability: Dependent person cannot identify credibility and reliability.
3. Lack of courage to act: it is the most manifestation of dependent.
4. Lack of motion: Motivation is the inspirations (emotional and intellectual)
Elements for developing motivations are
• Develop a positive attitude about life
• Be ambitions & self –expectation
• Identify priorities
• Plan activates and line goals
• Develop a great sense of responsibility
• Develop yours inter –personal attachment and relation ship
5.Lack of initiative taking
Planning is an important prerequisite for a successful action.
