- Unless otherwise states, the temperature and pressure should be taken ABSOLUTE.
- Gas Dynamic Tables and charts are allowed
- Suitable sketches, curves and diagram in such P-x & T-s planes should be included in solution
whenever possible - For air M=29, Cp= 1.005 , Cv =0.718 and γ = 1.4
- Any missed data can be assumed
Question No.1 Marks (30)
a) What are the differences between compressible and incompressible fluid ?
b) What does mean shock wave (definition and properties )?
c) List the types of shock wave according to directions and dimensions.
d) Compare between the weak and strong wave for flow over concave corner
e) Explain in detail the effect of the back pressure on the performance of a converging –
diverging nozzle, Explaining , where dose normal shock stand ?
f) Draw attached and detached shock wave for flow over a wedge, Explaining the
difference between them.
g) What is the difference between the normal and oblique shock waves ( please write
down the characteristic of each)
Question No.2 Marks (20)
An airstream at Mach number = 2 with a pressure of 100 kPa and a temperature - 3 oC
enters a diverging channel with a ratio of exit area
to inlet area of 3 as shown in figure. Determine
the back pressure Pb necessary to produce a
normal shock in the channel at an area equal to
twice the inlet area. Assume one dimensional,
steady flow, with the air behaving as a perfect gas
with constant specific heats; also assume
isentropic flow, except for normal shock
Question No.3 Marks (20)
A uniform supersonic air flow traveling at Mach 2 passes over a wedge, see figure. An
oblique shock, making an angle of 𝜷 = 40o with the flow direction, is attached to the
wedge under these flow conditions. If the static pressure and temperature in the uniform
flow are 20 kPa and – 10 oC. Determine :
1) The static pressure and temperature behind wave.
2) The Mach number of the flow passing over the
wedge, M2
3) The wedge half angle.
