Skyscrapers are built in cities to accommodate large numbers of people and businesses in a small area. As cities grow in population and economic activity, skyscrapers allow for vertical development that maximizes available space. They provide offices, homes, and other facilities within walking distance of public transportation networks and amenities. Tall buildings are a defining architectural feature of dense urban centers.
