PRESENTATION Guder

The document outlines the content of a presentation on the design of an irrigation system for the Upper Guder Multi-purpose project in Ethiopia. It includes sections on the design criteria, layout, hydraulic calculations for the main and infield pipes, a bill of quantities for equipment and fittings, and drawings. Input data used in the design such as soil properties, climate data, topography, and agronomy is also described. The specific design of the sprinkler system is then covered, including the calculation of sprinkler discharge rate and selection of sprinkler type and size.

Introdaction
 Upper Guder Multi-purpose project covers ~5000 ha of
land.
 dissected undulating topographic land features that is
why pressurized irrigation is selected (2068ha surface to
4926ha Pressurized)
 The appropriate working papers contain a background
material and references to specific projects have been
given in the main report.
 The project area lies between 8O 43’ to 8O 57’ Northing
and 37O 29’ to 37O 49’ Easting in Oromia Regional State
and in two Woredas namely Guder and Dere/Tikur
Inchini

Design Criteria
Design Criteria preparation was made based on :-
 Specific to the project and used for design of
dragline sprinkler,
 Due attentions was made to uniformity,
adequacy, efficiency, manageability,
sustainability, and cost-effectiveness
 engineering security coefficients and
considerations
Input Data for Drag line Sprinkler
Irrigation
The followings are used for the design work:-
 Soil

 Climate

 Topography

 Agronomy

 Geo technical Investigation

Input Data (contd…)
Soil
 Basic Infiltration Rate
 Average Readily Available Soil Moisture

 Percentage Allowable Water Depilation

 Effective Soil Depth

 Suitability map

 Suitability for Sprinkler Cut.jpg

Input Data (contd…)
Climate:-

 Temperature
 Sunshine hrs
 Relative Humidity
 Wind speed
 Rain fall
Input Data (contd…)
Topography
 Slope
 Gross Irrigable Area
 Net Irrigable Area
Input Data (contd…)
Agronomy
 Crop to be grown
 Crop depletion fraction
(0.45)
 Effective Root Depth (0.9 m)
Irrigation water requirement

Irrigation water requirement is

determined based on:-
Soil parameters
Climate Parameters
Agronomic Parameters
Design of the Irrigation System
After completing the planning of the system the
design work of pipe lines follows :-
 Main Conveyance Pipe (MCP)

 Main Pipe Line (MPL)

 Sub main pipe

 Lateral pipe
 Layout of Upper Guder Project-2015.10.20.dwg
 Main and sub main pipe line Hydraulic
calculation
 Pressure calculation
 Discharge calculation
MCP Calculation.xls
POC-1.xls
 Infield Hydraulic Design
 Pressure calculation
 Discharge calculation
A01.xls
Based up on the above facts Sprinkler
Discharge is computed as:-

 Peak net daily irrigation requirement:- 4.35 mm/day

 Adjusted Peak gross daily irrigation requirement:-
4.35 mm/day * 1.047 = 4.55 mm/day
 Irrigation frequency = Soil water holding capacity *
Effective root depth * Allowable depletion/ Dairy
irrigation requirement
=170*0.9*0.45/4.55 =15.1 days ~ 15 days
 Net irrigation application - 4.55 mm/day * 15 day=
68.25mm
 Peak gross daily irrigation requirement:-
68.25/0.75 = 91 mm
• Daily operation time :- 21 hours per day per position
 Sprinkler application rate per day:- 91.1*24/21 =104.1 mm
 Sprinkler application rate(I):-104.1/21 = 4.957mm/hr
 Q = (SL * Sm) * I
3600
 Where,
Q :- Sprinkler average discharge, l/s
SL :- Lateral spacing
Sm :- Sprinkler spacing
I :- Depth of application per hr
Q = (15 * 15) * 5
3600
= 0.31 l/s
= 0.31 l/s * 3.6
= 1.13 m3 /hr
Sprinkle Selection
 Type
 Size
 Discharge
 Sprinkler Design Criterea Guder.xlsx
After the detail design:-
 Nuzzle diameter 4 mm
 Sprinkler application rate(I):- 5.16 mm/hr
 Sprinkler average discharge 0.31 l/s or 1.13m3/hr
 Wetted diameter 30.5m
 Working presser 3.5 bar
Specific detail design approaches of
Guder Project
 Over all project efficiency:- 75%
 Irrigation interval:- 15 days
 Sprinkler spacing:- 15*15 m
 Module 75 m * 45 m
 Lateral spacing:- 75 m
 Lateral length (Max) 225 m
 Manifold length (Max) 315 m
 Daily working hour of sprinkler:- 21 hrs
 Average working pressure:- 3.0 bar
 Average wetting diameter 26.6 m
 Mini working pressure at P - 20% 2.8 bar
