Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand
each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

At the end of each module, you need to answer the test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you!

Most Essential Learning Competency

Identify the types of Information System

After you read and answer this learning module, you will be able to attain the
following objectives.
1. define the concept of information system
2. identify the different types of information system
3. describe the importance of information systems

Information Systems play a vital role in every aspect of our life. We are
constantly connected in the digital world. We must understand how information
systems and the data collected impact everything that we do.

The figure 1 below illustrates the Payroll System as an example of a basic

information system.

This module will explain the concept of information system and its types.

Q1_STE_Computer Programming_ Module 3 Page 1 of 14

Learn

In your previous lesson, you learned about information concepts, and

characteristics of valuable information.
Information is associated with data. Data represent values attributed to
parameters, and information is data in context and with meaning attached.
Information also relates to knowledge, as knowledge signifies understanding of
an abstract or concrete concept.
The Characteristics of Valuable Information are accessible, accurate,
complete, economical, flexible, relevant, reliable, secure, simple, timely
and verifiable. The value of information is linked directly to how it helps
decision makers achieve their organization’s goals.
Information System

An information system (IS) is a set of computer-based for collecting,

storing, and processing data. The data give information, contribute to learning as
well as digital products.

Businesses and other organizations depend on information systems to

interact with their suppliers and customers, manage and carry out their
operations, and compete in the marketplace.

Information systems are operated to track inter-organizational supply

chains and electronic markets. For example, businesses use information systems.
They can touch prospect customers and directly message via the Web. Also, they
can process financial accounts and manage their human resources.

Government agencies also use the information system services to manage

the economy, gather taxes, etc. For instance, the Learners’ Information System
(LIS) of the Department of Education, an online facility that provided for the
registration of learners enrolled in public schools.

Figure 2. Learners’ Information System

To fully understand information systems, you must learn the three

dimensions of systems and their power to provide solutions to challenges and
problems in the organization environment.

1. Organizational Dimension
Information systems have the standard operating procedure and culture of
an organization embedded within them. It involves functional specialties, business
processes, culture, and political groups.

2. Management Dimension
Information systems supply tools and information needed by the managers
to allocate, coordinate, and monitor their work, decide, create new products and
services, and make a long-range strategic decision.

3. Technology Dimension
Management uses technology to carry out their functions. It consists of –
computer hardware/software, data management technology, networking/telecom
technology.

Types of Information System

There are several types of information system each with specific

characteristics that make them unique. Here’s a look at the four commonly used
of information systems.

1. Transaction Processing Systems

Transaction processing systems provide a way to collect, process, store,
modify or cancel transactions. Most of these systems allow multiple

Q1_STE_Computer Programming_ Module 3 Page 3 of 12

transactions to take place simultaneously. The data collected by the system is in
the databases that can use to produce reports such as billing wages, inventory
summaries, manufacturing schedules, or check registers (e.g., payroll system,
reservation system, order processing system, etc.).

2. Decision Support Systems

A decision support system helps make decisions by working and analyzing
data that can generate statistical projections and data models. This system gives
support rather than replacing a manager’s judgment. It is improving the quality of
a manager’s decision. A DSS helps solve problems while using external data (e.g.,
financial planning system, logistics systems, group decision support system, etc.).

3. Management Information Systems

Management information systems build on data provided by transaction
processing systems. They extract their data from databases in different
departments to compile reports, such as analysis, inventory level reports, or
financial statements. They typically have little or no analytical capability.
Likewise, MIS provides accounts of the firm’s past or current performance (e.g.,
Learners’ Information System, budgeting system, etc.).

4. Executive Information Systems

Executive information system helps executives and other senior managers
analyze the environment. The organization operates to identify long-term trends
and plan appropriate courses of action. The information in such a system is often
weakly structured from both internal sources, such as its databases or data
warehouse, and external sources, such as data from customers, suppliers, or
other government databases.

Executive information systems tend to be highly individualized and are

often custom-made for a particular client group. However, many off-the-shelf
executive information systems packages do exist. And many enterprise-level
systems offer a customizable this type of information system module. An easy-to-
use digital dashboard with a real-time view of the performance of an organization
is a common feature of an executive information system (e.g., drill-down analysis,
status access, etc.).
