Church as People of God Upholding Rights and Responsibilities
Church as Body of Christ: Following Natural Moral Law for Unity and Harmony in
Society
Introduction
It is our vocation to manifest the image of God through our thoughts, words and works, and be transformed into
the image of His Son Jesus Christ. This vocation takes a personal form since each of us is called to enter into the divine
beatitude, that is, to show concern for the human community. As Catholic Filipinos, we must take responsibility for
building a just society. Each of us is called by Christ to do our part in working to reduce and abolish unjust social
structures and grave injustices that plague our country and harm our people.
Human beings are the crown of God’s creation and we are given capabilities to exercise our vocation, rights, and
responsibilities toward humanity for the common good. Therefore, each one has to exercise charity, responsibility,
obedience, and have willingness to care for nature and all of His creation, which is the very first duty that the Creator
posed on us.
Furthermore, as Church we are expected to act according to the universal law – the law of all laws which is the
Natural Moral Law. The Natural Moral Law is our ultimate guide for self-actualization.

OPENING PRAYER
Thank you Heavenly Father for this day, for extending my life. I believe in Your goodness with all my heart. I am asking
You to go before me today, to be my guide in whatever situations I’ll be facing. As each hour passes on this day, Father,
please bless me with Your strength and keep me under Your watchful eye the entire day. This I pray, in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
EXPLORE
My dear student, before you start answering your module, I want you to do first your opening prayer. You can use
the given prayer above or recite your personal prayer.
Let’s Start!
Congratulations! You are now in your lessons 6 and 7. I am hoping that you learned a lot from our previous lessons
and you are able to apply all your learning in real life situations especially in spreading the Good News about the teachings
of God. To start this new lesson kindly read and reflect the given article below concerning a charitable work which helps
people in Manila.
#WeCAREasOneIHMA
FIRM UP
The virtue of charity is the summit of the Christian life and the beginning of everlasting happiness. Aside from
Caritas Manila, there are other agencies and organizations that have the mission of spreading the love of God through
charitable works. The principle behind these charitable groups is not the answer to the question “How can we be happy?”
2|Page
but instead, “How can we make them happy?” It simply means that the ultimate means to happiness is to focus not on your
happiness, but on the happiness of others.
With this, charity is best expressed in the value of selflessness. Selflessness is the act of sacrificing one’s own
interest for the good of others. Selflessness means we act without thinking how we will profit or be rewarded. If we give
help to others, but expect recognition or the favour to be returned, this is not a selfless action. True selflessness means we
could do the action, even if it was never known to anyone else. Selflessness means that we identify with others and our
action is motivated by the feeling of oneness, empathy, and solidarity. We help others because we identify with their
problems and their sufferings.
Read the Gospel of Matthew 25: 31-46 on pages 272 – 273 of your book. Then, create a summary paragraph (3-5
sentences) about it.
DEEPEN
The Last Judgment in Matthew 25:31-46 enumerates 6 loving deeds, also known as the Corporal Works of
Mercy:
1. “I was hungry, and you fed me.”
2. “I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink.”
3. “I was a stranger, and you welcomed me into your house.”
4. “I was naked, and you clothed me.”
5. “I was sick, and you visited me.”
6. “I was in prison, and you came to see me.”
The Church propose one more, for the sake of keeping the number 7, drawn from the Book of Tobit to bury the
dead. Nourishing the famished, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, consoling the sick and the incarnated,
condoling with the bereaved, and ensuring proper burial for the dead prove a Christian’s love for the Lord.
Love for the King in the parable must be expressed in concrete loving deeds done to one’s brothers and sisters.
The basis of the King’s judgment for either salvation or damnation is based on this concrete love for neighbour. Love for
God can only be true when expressed in love for neighbour.
The first encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI was on love. It is entitled Deus caritas Est, meaning God is love,
published on December 25, 2005, Christmas Day, and it dealt with Christian love. He wrote another encyclical letter on
love on June 29, 2009, on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, entitled Caritas in Veritate, meaning Charity in
truth. It discussed particularly the theme of integral human development, which cannot be achieved without charity and
truth. These two papal documents illustrate the present-day approaches to love of neighbour. In today’s world, charity
must have the following characteristics:
1. ROOTED IN JUSTICE
Zaccheus is an amazing example of authentic conversion and personal transformation. Together with his
desire to do charity by giving half of his possession to the poor, he also wanted to do justice to those whom he had
defrauded by compensating them fourfold.” “Half of what I own, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I have cheated
anyone, I will pay him back four times as much” (Lk 19:8). It is true that “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pt 4:8),
but it cannot be a substitute for the demands of justice. For example, helping a beggar on the streets cannot make up
for the unjust wage that one gives his or her servant at home. One must fulfil, first of all, the requirements of justice
before he or she can even think of doing charity. #WeCAREasOneIHMA
2. ORGANIZED, WELL-ORGANIZED, AND NOT SPORADIC
Doing charity must be systematic. The impulsive help given to a man, lying hungry and dirty at a street
corner, is a thing of the past. As a Chinese poem from Kuantzu says, “Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day; teach a
poor man how to fish, he will eat every day.” Charitable action must be enduring. For charity to endure, it must be
organized, well-ordered, and not sporadic. Thus, one who is supporting a scholarship program for street children
should not feel guilty for not giving a few pesos to a street beggar.
Eternal Law – Is a plan of God in creating the universe and assigning to each creature therein – specific nature
#WeCAREasOneIHMA
(Agapay, 1991). It contains the Divine blueprints, which bring order into the universe because they direct all of
creation and creatures to their respective and goals.
Moral Law – The law which directs human behavior in human acts. It contains universal truths and ethical
principles that ought to guide the individual conduct in matters of right and wrong. Moral law tells human being how
to act in his/her relationship with God and others.
Human Law – Are laws made by human beings, and are valid only because human made them. Human law must be
in accordance with the Natural and Eternal law.
