Bf 109G “Gustav” quest, by 1941 the Nazi leadership had proven itself to be totally incapable of the long Fange planning that such a goal required. Indeed, by the summer of 1941 it was becoming Increasingly obvious, for those who would lock, that the German leadership was In capable of planning and executing even a protracted multfronted war that the coming in ion of the Soviet Union would thrust upon the German nation. The Lutwaffe was no ex In fact, Udet's Re/chsiu/tministrium, which had swollen to some tour thou. Is described by David Irving as being @ rabbit warren of colonels, bureaucrats {and engineers, responsible for everything but responsible to nobody. Messerschmitt’ BY 10, the backbone of the Luttwatfe fighter force, had reached its pinnacle with production of the F series and as the Luftwaffe began taking delivery of the "Frita" no successor to the Messerschmitt progeny was on the drawing board. Conse: quently, during the summer of 1941, as the German juggernaut knited deep into Russia, the Messerschmitt design team was engaged in yat another update of the now aging Bi 108. Under the designation Bf 109G, or “Gustav” as It affectionately became known ‘amang the troops, this version was to become the most numerously produced variant. Dictatas of the air war forced the Messerschmitt design people to-sacrifice handling ‘and maneuverability in order to increase maximum speed. Designed around the more powerful but heavier Daimler-Benz DB.605 engine, local strengthening was required which Increased weight which, In turn, required that the undercarriage be strengthened which again Increased weight; all of which increased wing loading and decreases handling Characteristics. The OB 605A powerplant featured an increased cylinder capacity that ralsed compression to 7.3 In the port cylinder bank and 7.5 in the starboard, increasing ‘pms to 2800 and horsepower to 1,476 at take off, with no Increase in overall engine dimensions. Weight of the new G series escalated 10 over 6500cas, but tho RLM felt that, Given the war conditions, the consequent loss of handling was a flr trade off with the {gain In power and speed achieved by the DB 60S installation. Many pilots In the field fet Stherwise, claiming that the "G” series was a regressive step from the F series, ‘To house the DB 605A engine, no change was made in the Upper contour ofthe however the oll cooler was deeper and ofa slightly diferent shape, similiar tothe: tion of the F. There were a number of differences in the panel lines forward ofthe cockpit especially around the windscreen where the lower oblique glass panel was deleted. The Size of the supercharger intake was the same as the F-4 and the broad bladed propelier of the "2" became standard. However, without close examination the "Gustav" was in fact quite similar in appearance to its predecessor. A redesign of the fuel tank caused the fuel filler to be relocated from below the cockplt to the spine behind the cockpit. The wheel wolls again reverted to the squared shape of the € and early F types in anticipation of Covers that were never produced. ‘With the air war moving to aver higher altitudes, the need for a pressurized Sama tated that the Gustav be produced with this provision. A cold wall type of pressur \was developed for the Bt 109G with the firewall, floor sidewalls and sloping armor plate behind the seat being sealed with rubber strips sealing the joints aroun the hinged canopy. The glazed panels of the greenhouse were layered with air sandwiched between them, @ calcium chloride pellet maintained dryness. The pressurization regulted in a redesigned heavier canopy, sealed with rubber strips allowing a pressure differential of 4.4u8isa rr. While pressurization was deleted on the majority of Gustavs, the provision was ‘available on each machine by the addition of equipment. When pressurization was ‘elated, a small fresh air ventilation scoop was positioned just below the windscreen, Production of the DB 605 powerplant was delayed, consequently the preproduction batch of twelve Bt 109G-0s wore completed with OB 60iE engines during fall and winter of 1941, The cowling and other external features of the G-0, however, wore essentially the ‘same as subsequent DB 605 equipped production machines, The DB 60547 was finaly Certified for production installation during early spring of 1942 with production of both the G-1 and G-2 commencing immediately. The pressurized G-1 and non-pressurized G-2 ‘were run simultaneously on the assembly line, being essentially pressurized and un- pressurized versions of the sam: Gets service introduction by several weeks. Provision was made for installation of a GM 1 nitrous oxide power boost system, previously used on the 2" option powerboost system under the designation U2. Weighing ‘more than 400.85, the GM 1 nitrous oxide system, known as Goring’s Mischung (Goring's mixture), had a tremendous affect on performance, not only allowing the G to operate DB 608, but toliteraly leave a pursuing Spitfire V standing ariant, however, the BI 1096-2 actually preceded the 2 after service introduction of the G series, operational units began repor- us fires shortly after take off, sometimes causing the loss of both aircraft and plot. Testing eventually showed that during overheating the horseshoe shaped nose ‘mounted cil tank seeped oll onto the hot engine, causing a flash fire, After ascertaining the problem, two small cooling scoops were introduced on each sie of the nose, cooling the oil tank. General Kesselring and others have attributed the death of Hans-Joachim Marseilles to one of these oil fires, however, British Aviation Historian Jack Foreman has. that a fracture inthe glyco! line was responsible forthe fire that forced Marseille ‘was flying a BI 1096-2 W. Mr. 14256, ngine throughout its operational career. Damiler- Benz maintained that the horseshoe ol tank was at fault while the Messerschmitt people Claimed that the hydraulic supercharger trapped alr bubbles In the ol. Eventually the DB people developed and installed a de-aerator but when no improvement was found the de ‘erator was discarded. The oil pressure problem was never satisfactorily solved. “The G series was the true workhorse of the Luftwaffe's Day Fighter Units, with over 10,000 being produced in ton basic variants. Every day fighter unit and eight foreign coun- tries used the 1096 through the end of the war Bf 109 F-4 From the beginning the G series was designed to accept a variety of Rustsatze (tied con. version sets). These bolt-on conversion kits allowed the BI 109G to be readily converted {rom role to role In the field, although the Austeatze wore often installed at the factory. ‘These conversion kits were numbered Rt through F-7, with R.5 not being Introduced, TT Paeaseaes OU, Ate Sit Ret ere save ack swing» 80780 bomb SS Ss Ra exc se ack ting #8280 bombs RS soo eroptnt 2 F-7oiwetn ining 6 ue ss10h cannon w Bf 109 G-1 ‘This Bf 109G-1 belonging to the Gruppen Adjutant of IIIJG 52 on the southern sector of the Eastern front is having its engine oll filled. The to Bf 109G-6 Fighter Like the Bf 1096-1 and G-2 the Bt 1096-5 and G-6 were produced in parallel and were essentially pressurized and nonpressurized ver- Sions of the same variant. The non pressurized Bf 109G-6 was much more numerous than the G-, more widely used and was also much Tongerived, being introduced in early 1949 and stl in first line ser Vice in 1945, Initially the only external difference between the G- and the G'5 was the small fresh air intake scoop found on either side of the windscreen of the nonpressurized G6. All modifications made to the G5 air frame were also made to the G8, however, because of its much longer proauction life the G6 evcived through addtional changes after production of the pressurized G-5 was terminated. ‘The stepped-up Allied bomber offensive against Germany and oc: cupied Europe, forced the Luftwatte to use the now elderly Bt 1096 series ina variety roles to try to counter the overwhelming numbers of Alliad planes. The Fw 190, while a more ideal bomber Interceptor because of its heavy armament, did not have the altitude perfor ‘mance necessary, nor the numbers to effectively stem the tide. The Bf 1096.6 was juryrigged Into a numberof roles for which it was un Suited and its performance suffered further. When combined with less capable pilots, this resulted in devastation to the Bt 1096-6 unite, who were Runted by packs of P5t Mustangs and P-47 Thunder bolts during 1944, The most widely produced versions of the G-6 were the F3 fighter (200 liter drop tank) the Rs Tighter (MG 151/20 underw: ing guns) and the B-2 reconnaissance fighter (Ab 50/30 camera In stallation). Considerable experimentation took place with the 2tcw BBR 21 underwing alrto-ar rockets, but they proved unsuitable and ‘ware seldom used operationally except by a few test groups, arly production G 6 aitcrat, like ts pressurized counterpart, had a tall radio mast, however, he majority of G- aircraft bullt were in the late configuration equipped with the short radio mast, FUG 254 IFF and whip antenna, and the F-T radio DF loop. The tall wooden tall was, also used extensively by the G6. Introduced on a few GS alrcratt, the erle aude canopy was widely used on very late production ‘machines. Sometimes incorrectly called the "Galland hood”, th ‘canopy replaced the main canopy and rear section witha single clear {canopy with two thin frames on either side of the top. Because of its ‘excellent visibility the erla haube proved to be very popular, although there were complaints that it was difficult to open during an mergency. Cooling problems had always plagued the Bf 109G series and with ‘the advent of the Bf 109G-8!Trop a fix was made on two areas of cool Ing (these were, of course, also found on a few G-5/Trop alrcrat) Fit, a email scoop was added to the Mg 131 bulge on the ight side of the cowling to provide additional cooling to the generator. Among these were JG 27, G51, JG 53 and JG 77. JG 2 and JG 26 were already In the low countries and France, and 5IG.1 ahd JG 11 were in Germany and Denmark. All these units were flying the Bf 1096. In Addition there also were a miscellany of specialized units, and as the Germans regained Control of the night skies, the Wilde Sau Geschwadern JG 300 and JG 301 were posted to the day fighters, specializing in bad weather interception. With this Influx of fighter planes and the advent of American aircraft that were now ranging the length and breadth 0f Germany, the Lultwatte recognized that some gor of fighter recognition feature was re: {uired to help the Luttwatfe fighters quickly recognize each other during the heat of bat tle ‘Although no written record survives, as early as 1943, the Germans apparently attemp: ted some sort of recognition for fighters (beyond the standard theater markings), many of them appeared with most oral of thelr vertical tll surfaces painted white. Units known to have used these white tall markings were JG 1, JG 11, JG 26, JG 27 (while in Southern Europe), and JG 52 (while still n Southeast Europe). These white markings were apparent: ly unsatisfactory since they had largely disappeared by early 1944, During the summer of 1944, just after O-Day, distinctive markings began to appear again, The fist units to use them appear to be JG 1, JG'3 and JG 27. These markings took the form of color bands around the rear fuselage. Again there is no surviving record of an order specifying these bands, but appearing as they did almost simultaneously, the ‘must Rave been some sort of official action ar sanction.
