History of Magdiwang National High School
History of Magdiwang National High School
(1967-2017)
The birth of Barrio High School throughout the country is the brainchild of Dr. Pedro
Tamesis Orata, known as “Father of Barangay High School”. He made high school
education accessible for Filipinos through his effort in building public high schools in the
Philippines.
It was the year 1967 when a new school took part in the history. It was the year when
Magdiwang Barrio High School stamped its name to the journey for existence and
prestige. This school started its story with just a name and people but without its own
place. It was only after 23 years when the school emerged and took its own place from
the marshland near the center of Magdiwang. This school actually was greatly credited
to untold efforts and persistence of various personalities. In this place, this school was
upgraded to Magdiwang National High School and still continues to uphold its reputation
as respected educational institution.
Magdiwang Barrio High School was established through the collaborative effort of the
Municipal Council headed by Ex-Mayor Recaredo M. Morgado who sponsored a
resolution which was addressed to the Secretary of Bureau of Public Schools in 1965,
requesting the immediate opening of Barrio HS in Poblacion, Magdiwang, Rombon. The
approval of the resolution was received by Mayor Recaredo in 1966. School Year 1967-
1968, Magdiwang Barrio High School was established under the management of Mr.
Juan T. Nepomuceno, Principal of Magdiwang Elementary School, who was appointed
as Assistant Principal of MBHS.
There were 20 students enrolled under the advisory of Mr. Reynaldo “Dandoy” Madula.
The classes were held at the Municipal Building and they had a monthly ten peso-tuition
fee (Php10.00) for the salary of the teachers.
The following year, the second batch class was organized. Ms. Minerva Manzala, now
Mrs. Radan, Mr. Paulino Dianco and Ms. Lucresia Fosana joined the teaching force in
the secondary school. Due to the increased number of students enrolled in MBHS, the
Magdiwang Elementary School was utilized in 1970 to accommodate all the students.
With the teamwork of Mr. Timoteo Tansiongco, PTA President and BPW foreman, the
PTA officers and Principal Nepomuceno, the Home Economics (HE) Building was
constructed out of the salvage materials donated by the Bureau of Public Works in
1
response to the scarcity of classrooms. The pioneer students of MBHS graduated in
1971, Mr. Alejandro Moral was the class valedictorian.
Year 1986, a Resolution No. 2, per Division Memorandum No. 15 series of 1986 of the
Division Office of Romblon, that the housing of High School student classes was
already stop in very site on the intermediate site of any municipality. This was issued by
DECS to the field requiring all Barrio High Schools in the country to have their own
school buildings with complete facilities and to have their own school site with an area
of not less than one (1) hectare. This problem came out during the term of Mrs. Patino
and OIC Mayor Rodolfo Alino and was later inherited by Honorable Mayor Arthur Rey
Tansiongco. Mayor Tansiongco immediately announced the donation of the parcel land
for the MBHS site. The necessary papers were prepared and followed up by the School
Principal Mr. Julio R. Radan Jr. In 1987, Douglas R. Tansiongco donated 10,000 sq.
meters of land where the MNHS is located.
In 1990, the students of MBHS vacated the Magdiwang Elementary School (MES) and
transferred to its new school site. The MBHS became Magdiwang National High school
in 1993. MNHS was first visited by the DECS Secretary Ricardo T. Gloria in 1997. The
