0 David I live out in the country with my family, and we all try to use our bicycles or go on
public transport instead of getting in the car. People ask us how we manage, but
it’s not too bad. In fact, Dad says he wants to sell the car next year and not have
one at all.
1 Alice We don’t buy any plastic bottles because we don’t drink bottled water or fizzy drinks
but we ask all our friends to give us their bottles instead of taking them to be recycled
at the bottle bank. We cut the tops and bottoms off and use them in the garden.
They’re great for protecting small plants when you first put them in the ground
because the animals can’t get to them.
2 James We live in a village and there are lots of forests around us so we’re very lucky because
we can go out and look for bits of wood and branches that have blown down. We
would never cut wood but if it’s on the ground, then we pick it up and bring it home
and we burn it in our wood burner which keeps the house nice and warm.
3 Stephen We went on a course last year which was all about living off the land. It’s amazing how
much stuff there is to eat out there if you know what you’re looking for. The obvious
things are mushrooms and berries, like blackberries, but there are also a lot of wild
plants which you can use. Not many people know about them so there is plenty there.
4 Julia
We are vegetarians so we don’t eat meat but we do keep chickens for their eggs and
we feed them with our leftover food. Basically, we don’t throw anything away but we
give it to the chickens. The only stuff we put in the rubbish is stuff that we can’t recycle.
5 Peter
There are a couple of things that help us to save both money and resources. We use
the washing machine at night when electricity is cheaper and we have showers not
baths as showers use much less water. We also recycle ‘grey’ water in the garden.
