THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In the past, long distance communication with family and friends required a lot of effort,

time and patience. However, as the years went by until the present time, communication was

just one click away and two or more groups of people could share their conversations. This is

because of the emerging technology that allows everyone to be at ease- the social media. This

platform is designed for people to share their thoughts- that includes creating visual contents,

sharing,

commenting, and sending a message to anyone else in the world.

Moreover, most teenagers, especially those who are high school students, are inclined

to this system. It is shown in a study that teens aging 13-18 years old spend an average of 9

hours a day, and Facebook is the top used tool in the world. Furtherance, Moon (2011)

investigated the impact of Facebook on undergraduate academic performance in his study. He

stated that social media is having a negative impact on students. The results show that the

more students use Facebook, the worse their academic performance suffers. On the contrary,

Oye (2012) discovered that the majority of students believe that social networking sites have a
positive impact on their academic performance, and he notes that the majority of younger

students use social networking sites for socializing rather than academic purposes.

People's lives are being harmed as a result of their excessive use of social media and

the internet. Addiction has also been linked to the use of social media, as well as negative

effects on family relationships, physical and mental health. However, wise usage of such

platform will not just bring advantages but will also lead to a healthier life and productivity.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to recognize the direct effect of social media usage to the performance

of senior high school students towards their academics. This is so because it is essential for the

students to have an awareness regarding this issue. Moreover, it could be a solution to diminish

the rising rate of social media inclination.

This research sought to answer the following questions:

1. How does social media affect the emotional, mental, spiritual and physical state of the

senior high school students?

2. What are the negative impacts of social media to senior high school students?

3. What are the positive impacts of social media to senior high school students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was conducted to determine the impact of social media to the academic

performance of senior high school students. Furtherance, the researcher believes that this

study is of great value to the following:

1. STUDENTS. Students will gain awareness about the underlying consequences of social

media and that they will be able to minimize it considering that too much use of this

would affect their studies.

2. PARENTS. Parents would limit their children towards using social media. Moreover, this

research will enlighten them that social media is one of the main factors that alleviates

the academic performance of students in school.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The information from this work was carried out and done by interviews and observations.

Twenty of grade 11 and 12 students in Iligan Computer Institute are chosen to share their

individual experiences about the said topic.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

1. Hamat and Hassan (2012) conducted a study on naturalizing social networking platforms

among Malaysian institutes of higher education undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The latter study is a qualitative study that used a self-administered questionnaire to collect

data from 638 student respondents. This model was statistically analyzed to make

observations about how people use the Facebook website. Similarly, the study gathered

opinions about the use of social networking sites (Facebook) as a learning tool and how it

helps them connect with their friends and peers to get help with their studies. However,

when it comes to interactions with teachers, there is an equal split of contrary views; As a

result, the study backs up the majority's conclusion that using social networking sites has no

significant negative effects on students' academic performance. They also take into account

the possibility of other factors such as Facebook addiction, excessive time spent on the

internet, and chatting. All of these factors associated with the use of the internet, particularly

social networking sites, may result in poor academic performance. Other researchers

conducted a study on forty (40) graduate students enrolled in a course in Advanced

Management Information Systems (AMIS) at a Taiwanese university to investigate the

effects of using Facebook for educational purposes on students' academic performance.

Students were divided into 14 groups and asked to discuss various questions based on

management information system cases in an online forum created specifically. The students

had to establish some summaries of the discussion made on the forum. For this study, data
was collected from the forty students at the end of the course using a self-administered

questionnaire. The goal of the study is to discover a link between friendship, advice,

adversarial factors, and student academic performance. The findings of the study show a

strong relationship between centrality in the friendship factor and students' academic

performance.

2. Junco R. (2012) investigate the impact of Facebook as a social media platform on students'

academic performance in academic courses. The study examines data from 1839 students

pursuing four-year degrees in residential institutes in the northeastern United States to

discover trends in the frequency of Facebook visits, activities, time spent on Facebook, time

spent on class preparation, and academic grades of the students under study. According to

the data analysis, time spent on Facebook and frequency of visits to Facebook are

negatively related to students' academic performance in terms of their GPA. However, there

is a slightly negative correlation between time spent studying for class. He further adds that

while time spent on social media and academic performance are negatively correlated, this

relationship does not appear to be the crucial barrier to academic success in real-world

scenarios.

3. According to Literature Reviews, Social Media (January 1, 2017), this research effort was

aimed at determining the effects of Social Media on student performance. As a result, the

literature review discusses relevant research that is relevant to the objectives of this

research project; Several research studies on the topic under consideration were discovered

to be very recent. Since most of the innovative features offered by social media platforms

such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Tumbler, Tiktok, and many others are

relatively new, and the phenomenon of the use of these media has recently increased with

the available.

The majority of the students chosen have had their work published in the last four to five

years. Tees (2013) provides a very thorough literature review paper on the role of social
media in higher education virtual and in-person classes. The review consulted almost every

popular research database in the world to make this review rich in terms of explaining the

role of various social media in higher education classes. According to some researchers,

Facebook is the most popular social networking site among students, and it reached one

billion users in October 2012.

4. According to Rejie D. Astodello (December 11, 2016), Tabuk City, Kalinga - People in the

world are reaping the benefits of modern technology. Previously, communication and the

free exchange of ideas between people were hampered by long distances, race, and even

religion. However, these barriers can no longer obstruct the flow of information and

knowledge because the new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts

through online social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like.

Because students are highly motivated to use social media sites, the majority of them use

them to satisfy their social needs rather than their academic needs. They have the freedom

to do whatever they want – they can upload and download data, make new friends and

comment on other people's lives, and even create new online identities that the real world

does not permit. It has also been observed that the majority of students nowadays,

particularly those in secondary school, spend the majority of their time chatting with their

friends, playing online games, and watching videos rather than reading their lessons,

completing assignments, and other academic requirements. The primary reason is that

when they work or search for materials online, they are drawn to social networking sites to

kill boredom during study time, diverting their attention away from their work. The darker

side of this, which has piqued the interest of many parents, is that some students are

becoming lazier and less interested in attending school. This is most likely due to them

being overindulged to gain global access, which causes them to perform poorly

academically.
5. Other researchers have successfully concluded that the extent of cognitive absorption is an

essential determinant of Facebook usage frequency and length. They also mention that self-

control with other personality factors influences intrapersonal absorption. Even though

multitasking skills have little to do with reducing the frequency and use of social media

among students, they help to regulate the impacts of Facebook on students' performance by

fine-tuning cognitive absorption. Kirkpatrick (2010) investigates the effects of Facebook as a

social platform that has a crucial impact on students' academic achievement. His study

collected data from 1839 students enrolled in residential institutes in the northeastern United

States to see if there were any trends in the frequency of Facebook visits and activities. He

found that the amount of time spent on Facebook and frequency of visiting Facebook were

negatively related to students' GPA performance.

DEFINITION OF TERMS/TERMINOLOGIES

For clarity and understanding of the terms used in this study. The following terms were defined

operationally:

Social Media- refers to websites and applications that emphasize communication, community-

based input, interaction, content sharing, and collaboration.

Social Networking Site- web-based services that enable users to create a public or semi-public

profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a

connection and view, and traverse their list of connections as well those made by others within

the system.
Academic- is used to describe things related to school, college, and university work, particularly

work that involves studying and reasoning rather than practical or technical skills.
