SSES1-Science-Q2-LP1-week 1

This science document discusses different animal body parts and habitats. It contains activities where students identify body parts of animals in pictures and classify animals according to where they live. The document also discusses how different animals obtain food and move using their specific body parts. It teaches that animals live in various habitats including land, water, and both land and water. Their body parts help them survive in their environments.

Science 1 – SSES, Quarter 2, Week 1

Name Date
Grade/Section Rating
I. Introductory Concept
Animals differ in many ways. They have different body parts
that help them to survive in their environment.
In this module, you will learn many things about different
animals.

II. Learning Competencies

At the end of this learning packet, you should be able to:
- Identify the body parts of some animals
- Classify animals according to body parts
III. Activities:
Activity and Analysis 1:
Directions: Do the following:
1. Get pictures of the animals listed in the table.
2. Observe and identify the body parts of animals in the pictures.
3. Complete the chart below by putting a check mark () on
the body parts that each animal has.

Directions: Complete the statements.

1. All animals in Group A have ___________,_____________,
______________, and ___________. They are used for
_________________.

2. All the animals in Group B have ___________,____________,

_____________, and _____________. They use their ______________
to protect themselves from other animals.

3. All the animals in Group C have _____________,_____________,

_____________, and _____________. They use their _____________
and _______________ for swimming. Most land animals have
head, body, tail, and legs.

Activity and Analysis 2:

Directions: Study the pictures of the animals listed on the chart
below. Put a check mark () on the column that indicates where
each of the animals live.

Remember This
ANIMALS AND THEIR BODY PARTS
There are two body parts which animals have. These are the
head and body. Some animals have special body parts that other
animals do not have.

3
RO_Science_Grade 1_Q2_LP1
For example, carabaos, cows, and goats
have special body parts called horns. These
animals use their horns for protection from
bigger animals.
Fish do not have legs.
Instead, they have fins and tail. Fish use their fins
for swimming. The tail moves from side to side.
This movement makes the fish move forward.
Birds like ducks, chicken, and
eagle have wings. Insects are
small animals with six legs. Most
insects like butterfly, mosquito,
and bee have wings.

Body Coverings of Animals

Elephants and carabaos are covered with thick skin and hair.
Cats are covered with soft hair called fur. Birds are covered with
feathers. Fish and alligators are covered with scales. Frogs are
covered with moist skin. Turtles are covered with hard shell.

CLASSIFYING ANIMALS
How Animals Move

Animals have body parts which they use for walking, running,
jumping, flying, crawling, and swimming.

Animals and Their Habitat

A habitat is a place where animals live. Some animals live on
land like horses and sheep. Birds and insects like bees and
butterflies live in trees and plants. Some live underground like
earthworms, crabs and ants. Tigers, wolves, and owls live in the
forest. Some animals live in hot and dry deserts like camels. Polar
bears live in very cold places. These animals are all called land
animals.

5
RO_Science_Grade 1_Q2_LP1
Animals like fish, octopus, shellfish, shrimps and squid spend
most of their time in water. They are called water animals.

Turtles, alligators, crocodiles, and frogs live both on land and

water. These animals need to spend enough time on land and in
water in order for them to live. Because they cannot breathe
underwater, they need to come up the surface of the water for
air.

How Animals Get Their Food

Animals have different ways of getting their food. Most of them
use their mouths to get food. Giraffe use their long neck to reach
and get the leaves from tall trees. Squirrels grasp nuts and crack
them with their teeth.
A butterfly has along sucking tube called
proboscis that sips nectar from flowers. A
mosquito also has a sucking tube, which is used
in sipping fluid from leaves, soft stems, and fruits.
This sucking tube coils up when not in use.
Many spiders spin webs to catch insects flying
in the air. But, not all spiders spin webs. Some of
6

them hide and wait in the surroundings, next to plants and flowers.
When an insect comes close, the spider bites it with its poisonous
fangs.
Lizards and frogs catch insects with their tongue. Insects are
their food.
Birds use their beaks to pick up grains and to
catch worms and small insects. Birds like hawks and
eagle have hooked beaks and hooked claws that
help them catch fish. The shape of their beaks and
their sharp claws help them tear up their food into
smaller pieces.
