The document provides guidelines for ratio of span to overall depth or thickness for various reinforced concrete and steel structural elements. For reinforced concrete beams, the ratio of span to depth is 20 for simply supported beams, 25 for continuous beams, and 10 for cantilever beams. For reinforced concrete slabs, the ratio ranges from 30 to 40 depending on support conditions. Reinforced concrete flat plate floors and flat slab floors have minimum thicknesses ranging from 150mm to 300mm depending on loading and span. Reinforced concrete staircases and cantilever walls have specified thickness to span ratios and base widths. Steel elements like plate girders, lattice shell roofs, and crane girders also have recommended span to depth ratios included in

GENERAL GUIDE

CP114 Table 13
Ratio of span to overal depth
Beams

Simply supported beams 20

Continuous beams 25
Cantilever beams 10

Slabs

Slabs spanning in one direction, simply supported 30

Slabs spanning in one direction, continuous 35
Slabs spanning in two directions, simply supported 35
Slabs spanning in two directions, continuous 40
Cantilever slabs 12

Reinforced concrete flat plate floors

Suitable for light and medium loadings ie., flats & offices
Eg, Domestic loading and grid spacing of 4.5m plate
thickness is about 150mm 150mm
Office and classroom loading and grid spacing of 5m plate
thickness is about 200mm 200mm

Reinforced Concrete flat slab (Mushroom) floor

Suitable for heavy distributed loads, say imposed (live)
loads of 5kN/m2 or more as in warehouses.
Bays should be square or nearly square with a
column grid of about 6 - 6.5m. For these conditions
For these conditions the slab thickness will be from
about 230 to 300mm 230mm to 300mm

In-situ reinforced concrete staircases

Stairs spanning horizontally between supporting
walls or stringer beams:-
for spans up to about 2m, thickness of waist is 80mm 80 mm

Stairs spanning longitudinally between supports at top

and bottom (no supports at sides) :-
thickness of waist = approx 1/25 th of horizontal span 1/25 th of span

Prestressed concrete floor slabs

For spans up to 10m for flat roofs, flats and offices:-
minimum thickness of slab itself is about 1/40 of span 1/40th of span

Prestressed concrete beams

Depth 1/20th to 1/25th span

Reinforced concrete cantilever walls

Base thickness = thickness of stem .= thickness of stem
Base width = 2/3 height of wall (L shaped base not loaded) 2/3 height of wall
Base width = 1/2 height of wall ( inverted Tee shape) 1/2 height of wall
Base width = 1/2 height of wall (L shaped base loaded) 1/2 height of wall

STEEL

Long span plate and lattice girders:-

Depth of girder 1/10th to 1/14th of span

Lattice shell roofs in steel

Spans up to 35m are economic 35m

Surge Girders
Width approx 1/12th to 1/15th of span 1/12 tp 1/15th span
Min width must not be less than 1/20th span not less than 1/20th span

Crane Girders Depth to span ratio

Universal beams approx 1: 16 1:16
Heavy duty approx 1:7 1: 7

Latticed crane columns ( width of column legs apart)

Back leg to crane leg - light duty class 1&2 height / 8
Back leg to crane leg - heavy duty class 3&4 height / 5
