Mini Design Brief
Smoothie Bowl
Brief
Students will investigate the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating to design, produce and evaluate
a healthy smoothie bowl individually. The smoothie bowl will need to feed 1. Students will work
individually for 100 minutes to complete the practical with the end product presented to the
teacher for sampling. Must keep to a strict $10 budget for the full recipe, not just ingredient cost.
Task 1: Constraints and Considerations
Constraints are: aspects of the design brief or situation that cannot be changed
Considerations are: other aspects of design brief that must be thought about or considered.
Often these considerations will set the direction for the research.
Identify 3 constraints and 3 considerations from the brief above.
- Has to feed one person.
- Must cost $10 or less, not just for the ingredients.
- Must be made in 100 minutes or less.
- Where should I buy the food from?
- What food should I use in my smoothie bowl?
- What foods are in season?
Task 2: Research
Based on your knowledge of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, outline what foods you
will need to use the most in your smoothie bowl. Remember the guide is a pie chart with
sections based on what you should eat the most and least of.
There should be grains inside of my smoothie bowl because the healthy guidelines say that
you should eat a large amount of grains, some grains that I could use in my smoothie bowl
are rolled oats, muesli and/or wheat flakes. I will not add any vegetables even though the
guidelines say to a lot of vegetables, I just can’t think of any vegetables that would taste nice
inside of my bowl. From the poultry section I won’t choose any meats however I could add
some nuts, some nuts I could add are macadamia or ground almonds. From the diary
section I could add some milk however the smoothie bowl does not need milk, for I am very
tight moneywise for this practical. Some fruits I could add are dragon fruits, mixed berries,
banana, pineapple etc.

Task 3: Recipe
Write up your method for how you will create this recipe during our next practical. It does
not have to be a fully formatted recipe but enough instructions for you to be able to follow.
You can have this printed with quantities and guidance on the day.
1. Blend together the dragon fruit, yoghurt, milk, raspberries and pomegranate until a thick
paste is formed.
2. Pour the mixture into a small bowl.
3. Arrange the chia seeds on one quarter of the bowl in a slight banana curve and place a
few cubes of dragon fruit and raspberries on top.
Task 4: Shopping List table with Prices
Ingredient Amount Price to purchase
Example: Strawberries 4 $7 a punnet (because you can't
buy 4 strawberries you must buy
them in a punnet)
Pink dragonfruit A handful of chunks $3
Raspberries About half a cup $3
Pomegranate A small sprinkle $2
Chia seeds About a tablespoon $2
