HOSPICE OF SAN MICHELE

housing incorrigible youths under 20 years of age.

 HOSPICE OF SAN MICHELE- Saint Michael was established in 1704. John Howard, a reformer,
brought to England from Rome a model of the first institution for treating juvenile offenders.- He
was often thought of as the Father of Prison Reform.

 The buildings of the Ospizio di San Michele were built during the 17th and 18th centuries and
served a number of purposes including an orphanage, a hospice for abandoned elderly, and jails
for minors and women.

 Frederick Howard Wines, in his Punishment and Reformation," gives to Pope Clement XI the
honor of having inaugurated the peni- tentiary era of criminal jurisprudence by founding the
Hospital of Saint Michael in 1704.

 The word "hospice" derives from Latin hospitum, meaning hospitality or place of rest and
protection for the ill and weary.

 Hospice care focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a person with a serious illness
who is approaching the end of life.

 Listen to pronunciation. (HOS-pis) A program that gives special care to people who are
near the end of life and have stopped treatment to cure or control their disease.

What is the difference between home health care and hospice?

Hospice cares for a patient’s comfort when medical treatments to cure the illness are no longer effective
or not wanted. Home health care is meant to help people get better from injuries or illnesses or improve
their personal function abilities.
