Lesson Plan for Grade 7 English

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Observe the correct production of vowel and consonant sounds,
diphthongs, blends, glides, etc. (EN7F-I-a-3.11)

LEARNING AREA: Reading Comprehension

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

a. Identify vowel sounds;

b. Categorize the given words according to its proper vowel sounds; and

c. Appreciate the importance of vowel sounds through spelling bee.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Vowel Sounds

B. Reference: Rambe, R. S. (2019). The students’ ability in pronouncing short and long vowel at
III semester of English department IAIN Padangsidimpuan (Doctoral dissertation, IAIN
Padangsidimpuan).

B. Recall

 What is consonant sound?


 Cite an example of consonant sound in words.

C. Motivation

“Guess What?”

 The teacher will present three (3) incomplete words to the class.
 The teacher will post it on the board.
 Each word has missing letter.
 The teacher will select three (3) students to guess the missing letter of the word.

Possible Words: Blend/Bland, Post/Past, Flash/Flesh

D. Lesson Proper

Vowel - is a speech sound made with your mouth open and your tongue in the middle of your mouth,
without touching your teeth or lips.

 Short Vowel Sounds - happen when a letter in a word is not pronounced the way the letter
sounds.

Short a (ă) Short e (ĕ) Short i (ĭ) Short o (ŏ) Short u (ŭ)
apple egg ink orange umbrella

 Long Vowel Sounds - happen when the letter makes the actual sound of the letter.

Long Vowel Sounds – a (ā)

Activity:

“Right Where You Belong!”

 The teacher will divide the class into two (2) groups.
 The teacher will post a table on the board.
 Each group will be given twenty (20) words.
 Each group will categorize the words from which vowel sound they belong.
 Each member of the group will paste the word one by one on the board.
 Each group will be given five (5) minutes to do the task.
 The group who will get the highest score will be the winner.

Words: Praise, Heave, Music, Plan, Plot, Hug, Raisin, Grease, Human, Mask, Block, Plug, Crime,
Scope, Help, Slid, Cloak, Thrive, Fresh, Shift

Analysis:

 During the activity, how were you able to analyze the words?
 Cite an example of the long ‘o’. How about the short ‘u’?

Abstraction:

 Why is it needed to pronounce vowel sounds properly?


 How important vowel letters are in our daily communication?

Application:

“Spell Me!”

 The teacher will divide the class into two (2) groups.
 Each group will spell the words that the teacher will say.
 The teacher will say the word and its meaning once.
 Each group will write the words to spell on a one-eight (1/8) illustration board.
 Each word only merits one (1) point.
 The group who will get the highest score will be the winner.

Words to Spell: Spite, Scheme, Payment, Suffrage, Havoc, Skeptical, Spotless, Justice, Potent, Rampage
IV. Evaluation

Direction: On a one-half (1/2) sheet of paper crosswise, copy the following words below. Encircle the
word with different sound that does not belong to the group.

V. Assignment

Direction: On a long bond paper, draw at least five (5) objects that can be found in your house. Write the
name and identify its vowel sound.
