5. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
State why you are applying to the M.E.S.C Master course; discuss your motivations to study abroad, your professional interests and
your career goals and expectations (not more than 1 page).
I am a gregarious egalitarian guy who loves watching movies, reading novels, and playing pool which I
always fell to win, watching football and I love athletics. I won the 10,000 m race trophy twice in the
annual all universities competition. And most of all learning different languages .My mother tong is
Amharic but I speak two more native languages fluently. I started learning Germany in the Germany
cultural institute when I was in Addis Ababa but I couldn’t keep up because I was allocated to another
city for my undergraduate studies. But I still keep my nose in books as I get the chance to do so. Now
days I am studying French, my girl friend is a French word enthusiast.
The reason I wanted to study abroad is that I want to be a friend to the whole world and I want to
challenge the European higher education. Through this I will have the opportunity to work with the
international industries by organizing integrated multinational teams with the help of the language skills
and social interactions I gained during my study. And most of all I want to have a quality education that
will help me to be more useful and most all I will be able to transfer my knowledge to the students in
my home country.
I have a bachelor degree in chemical engineering in my undergraduate studies and I am working as an
assistant lecturer in Bahir Dar University Engineering Faculty since July 2005. I have won the second
place in the national annual trophy of the best project of the year (2005-2006), which is prepared by the
chemical engineers association, with my final year project to fulfill my undergraduate degree. The title
of the project is “Energy Audit on Bahir Dar Textile Factory” which I have put a great deal of endeavor
on with my partner. I did internship in glass factory where I had the exposure to appreciate some of the
achievements of Material Technology and I have done a project on “heat recovery from the rotary drier
to dry raw materials” and it is implemented. I am undertaking a research work entitled “Energy auditing
and application of renewable energy technology for hotel industries; case study Hilton Hotel” financed
by the universities’ research and publication office.
When I was a child I had a talk with my brother on the shortage of electricity and the possibilities of
using sun as a substitute, we couldn’t finish our favorite show on the TV, but the conversation didn’t go
far. From that moment onwards what ever I see I will think of the possibilities of making something that
may come in handy as an energy source. Sometimes I will go for them and try my best to test their
thermal ability.
The department has given me responsibility of delivering the “Polymer science and technology” course
for chemical engineering students. But this is not good enough: the department need more experienced
and qualified scholars more than ever to keep up with the incessantly growing science. I have taken
basic courses like Thermal Unit Operation, transport phenomena, Physical Chemistry, Thermodynamics
(I &II) and Material Engineering that have honed my appetite towards Material for Energy Storage .All
these factors inspired me, and brought the confidence to apply for “Material for Energy Storage”.
After completing my M.Sc I will;
• Contribute a prominent endeavor on producing qualified sagacious engineers and technologists,

who have a better understanding of Material Sciences.
• Work on the establishment of a well organized Material for Energy storage department and will
advocate on putting the anchor.
• Concentrate on research works that can make a difference in the living conditions of Ethiopians
and in the field.
