TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

Types of Communication:
Mainly four types of communication are there:
1. Intrapersonal Communication
2. Interpersonal Communication
3. Mass Communication
4. Group Communication

1. Intrapersonal Communication
⮚ Intrapersonal Communication takes place within a single person
⮚ Its purpose is to clarify ideas or analyse a situation
⮚ Sometimes it is undertaken to reflect upon or appreciate something

There are three aspects of Intrapersonal communication. They are


: I. Self Concept
II. Perception
III. Expectation

2. Interpersonal Communication
⮚ Interpersonal Communication is the process by which people exchange
information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages ⮚
It is a face-to-face communication with two or more people.
⮚ Interpersonal communication is not just about what is actually said (the language
is used) but how it is said and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of
voice, facial expressions, gestures and body language.

Classification of Interpersonal Communication

a) Direct Interpersonal Communication:


⮚ It involves a direct face to face relationship between the sender and the receiver
of a message and the relationship between them is interdependent. ⮚ It is
characterized by a strong feedback component because of its immediacy (live or
so-called real time)) and primacy (taking place here )
⮚ It is not only included to verbal cue (words) rather various elements of non
verbal cues are there
⮚ Its purposes are to influence and discover, as well as to share and play together

b) Mediated Interpersonal Communication:
⮚ It involves technology that assists or links the sender and receiver of the
message.
⮚ It may involve immediacy (live or so-called real time)
⮚ It does not involve a primary context but instead uses technology to connect the
different parties in communication

3. MASS COMMUNICATION
⮚ Mass communication is more public form of communication between the entity
and a large audience, mediated by some form of technology.
Example: Radio, Television, Multimedia, E-Newspaper, E-Magazine ⮚ It may be
included to immediacy (live/real time) or recorded or it may be rooted usually in
the recent past.
Example: Live Cricket Match, YouTube Video, Video Recording of
Wedding/Birthday Ceremony

4. Group Communication

⮚ Group communication refers to the interaction between members of a small group


of individuals.
⮚ Group communication applies to groups containing between three and 20 people.
⮚ Quality group communication involves a facilitator and group members with a
sense of belonging, common goals and mutual respect.
⮚ Both verbal and nonverbal communication are components of group
communication.
⮚ Successful group communication is essential in a business environment. Many
variables come into play, starting with the seating arrangement. A circular
seating arrangement allows all group members to make eye contact and interact
with all other members.
⮚ When the primary purpose of a group is to share information, an alternate
arrangement is preferable. This form of group communication starts with a
seating arrangement that emphasizes the group leader.
⮚ For example: a long table with the leader at one end. The leader presents
information, and group members give feedback.
