3 Miller Indices

Here are the Miller indices for the plane intercepting at (a, 2a, a/3) in a simple cubic unit cell: (1, 2, 3) The distance d between successive planes with Miller indices (hkl) is given by: d = a / √(h2 + k2 + l2) For a cubic lattice with lattice constant a, the general form of the equation applies.

LATTICE PLANES
 The lattice points can be considered as
part of various sets of parallel planes

 For a given Bravais lattice, any plane

containing three noncollinear Bravais
lattice points is defined as a lattice
plane

 Each set of planes will have a different

orientation with respect to the unit cell
axes.

LATTICE PLANES
 Every such plane will have infinite number of points
(due to translational symmetry) – two-dimensional
Bravais lattice

Dekker

 Set of parallel, equispaced planes which together

contain all the points of the three-dimensional
Bravais lattice is called a family of planes
MILLER INDICES
Steps to find the Miller indices:

 Find the intercepts of the plane on the axes in

terms of the lattice constants in each direction.
(The axes may be those of a primitive or non-
primitive cell)

 Take the reciprocal of these intercept values and

reduce to the smallest integers which have the
same ratio
MILLER INDICES
 If a plane makes intercepts pa, qb, and rc with the three
axes, Miller indices (hkl) are defined as follows:

such that h, k, l are the

smallest integers with no
common factors >1

Dekker
(hkl) represent a set of planes
MILLER INDICES
 If any intercept is negative then the corresponding index
is indicated by a bar at the top e.g.

 represents planes which are equivalent in a

crystal even though their Miller indices are different

MILLER INDICES
 To specify a direction in a three-dimensional crystal ,
three indices, u, v, w are represented as

where the indices are integers with no common factors >1

 The direction represented here is obtained in the

following way:
From origin if is covered along a-axis, along b-
axis and along c-axis, the direction if this point
(reached) from the origin indicates the direction
e.g. In a cubic crystal y axis is represented by [010]

 The set of equivalent directions is represented by

MILLER INDICES:

1. A plane intercepts at (a, 2a, a/3) in a simple cubic unit

cell. What are the Miller indices of the plane?

2. For a cubic lattice with lattice constant a show that the

distance between successive planes is given by:
