CONDITIONAL SENTENCES (CS)

(Kalimat Pengandaian/Kalimat Bersyarat)

There are 3 types of CS :


a. CS type 1 → present tense (V1) : sesuatu mungkin terjadi di masa akan
datang
b. CS type 2 → past tense (V2) : menunjukkan pernyataan pengandaian yg
mustahil terjadi saat ini (bertentangan dengan yang saat ini terjadi)
c. CS type 3 → past participle (V3) : menunjukkan sebuah pernyataan
pengandaian di waktu lampau (sesuatu yang tidak mungkin terjadi karena
aktifitas sudah dilakukan di masa lampau sehingga tidak mungkin terjadi
sekarang ini)

Conditional sentence (CS) type 1


The pattern :

a. If simple present tense, present future → will + V1


If clause (V1) main clause

b. Present future if simple present tense


If clause (V1)

Conditional sentence (CS) type 2


The pattern :
a. If simple past tense, past future → would + V1
If clause (V2) main clause

b. Past future if simple past tense


If clause (V2)

Conditional sentence (CS) type 3


The pattern :

a. If past perfect tense, past future perfect tense → would have + V3


If clause (V3) main clause

b. Past future perfect tense if past perfect tense


If clause (past participle / V3)

Examples :
Rewrite the sentences below with the correct conditional sentences type 1, 2, and 3
1. If we (arrive) late, the teacher (be) angry.
CS type 1: If we arrive late, the teacher will be angry
CS type 2: If we arrived late, the teacher would be angry
CS type 3:If we had arrived late, the teacher would have been angry
2. If Fadia (send) him a letter, Toni (answer) it promptly.
CS type 1: If Fadia sends him a letter, Toni will answer it promptly
CS type 2: If Fadia sent him a letter, Toni would answer it promptly
CS type 3: If Fadia had sent him a letter, Toni would have answered it promptly

3. Father (drive) the car if Budi (go) with him.


CS type 1: Father will drive the car if Budi goes with him
CS type 2: Father would drive the car if Budi went with him
CS type 3: Father would have driven the car if Budi had gone with him

4. Mother (give) us punishment if we (be) lazy.


CS type 1: Mother will give us punishment if we are lazy
CS type 2: Mother would give us punishment if we were lazy
CS type 3: Mother would have given us punishment if we had been lazy

5. I (tell) you the truth if you (keep) the secret.


CS type 1: I will tell you the truth if you keep the secret
CS type 2: I would tell you the truth if you kept the secret
CS type 3: I would have told you the truth if you had kept the secret

Rewrite the sentences below using the correct conditional sentence type 1, 2, and 3
1. If I (be) a bird, I (fly) around the world.
2. If I (be) you, I (buy) some novels.
3. My father (buy) a new TV set if he (get) some money.
4. Tia (come) here if you (call) her.
5. If the weather (be) fine, we (go) to the beach.
