AP20.00-P-2010GH Checking/Correcting Cooling System Level

Checking/Correcting Cooling System Level

Coolant level:

To check the coolant level, the vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped.

Check coolant level only when coolant is cold.

The coolant level should reach the COLD LEVEL mark in the reservoir.

Adding coolant:

If coolant has to be added, a 50/50 mixture of water and MB anticorrosion/antifreeze should be added.

After adding coolant, close cap until you hear it click a few times.

The drain plugs for the cooling system are located on the left and right side of the engine block directly above the engine mounts and at the bottom
of the radiator.

Warning!

In order to avoid possible serious burns or injury:

^ Use extreme caution when opening the hood if there are any signs of steam or coolant leaking from the cooling system, or if the coolant
temperature gauge indicates that the coolant is overheated.

^ Do not remove pressure cap on coolant reservoir if engine temperature is above 194°F (90°C). Allow engine to cool down before removing
cap. The coolant reservoir contains hot fluid and is under pressure.

^ Using a rag, slowly open cap approximately 1/2 turn to relieve excess pressure. If opened immediately, scalding hot fluid and steam will be
blown out under pressure.

^ Do not spill antifreeze on hot engine parts. Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which may burn if it comes into contact with hot engine parts.

Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
TASK
Actuating electric suction-type fan.

DESIGN/FUNCTION
The ME-SFI control module actuates the fan steplessly through the electric suction-type fan (engine/AC) control module. The specified speed
of the fan is transmitted by the ME-SFI control module to the electric suction-type fan (engine/AC) control module by means of a pulse width
modulated signal. The ON/OFF ratio is 10-90%, the different ratios meaning e.g.

10% electric suction-type fan OFF

20% electric suction-type fan ON, minimum speed
90% electric suction-type fan ON. maximum speed

The status of the A/C or automatic A/C is transmitted by the instrument cluster through the CAN to the ME-SFI control module. The
specified speed of the fan is dependent on this status.

NOTE:
CAN-compatible instrument cluster required which is programmed accordingly with HHT to with/without A/C or automatic A/C.

Coolant Level Sensor: Description and Operation

The coolant level indicator electronic switch (S41) is integrated in the coolant reservoir.

Coolant level switch, task

To record the coolant level:
Coolant level In order or below minimum

Coolant level switch, design

The coolant level indicator electronic switch (S41) consists of two electrodes which are permanently cast to the coolant reservoir and a
connector with contacts which have an electrical connection to the electrodes.

Coolant level switch, function

The two electrodes are either immersed or not immersed in the coolant depending on the coolant level. As a result the test current changes via
the coolant level indicator electronic switch (S41). This change is evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1).
An alternating current is used so that the electrodes do not disintegrate.

Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

Task
Detecting the coolant temperature and supplying information to the engine control module

Design
Plastic housing with an NTC resistor, 2-pin, angled plug connection.
Contact assignment at connector:
Contacts 1 and 2 engine control module.
Inserted into hole and sealed with O-ring.
Attached by means of spring clasp.

Function
The NTC resistor integrated in the coolant temperature sensor alters its electrical resistance in line with the coolant temperature. NTC means
Negative Temperature Coefficient, i.e, the electrical resistance becomes less as the temperature rises.

Example:
coolant temperature resistance
20 °C 3100 ohm ± 5%
80 °C 315 ohm ± 5%

2 Heat coolant thermostat (1)
- Suspend coolant thermostat (1) from a wire in a vessel filled with water and heat the water.

CAUTION: For heating on no account use a welding torch or soldering torch as the sudden introduction of heat alters the structure
of the metal!

3 Measure temperature of water

NOTE: The heating-up rate should be not more than 1 degrees C to 2 degrees C/min from about 8 degrees C below the start of opening of
the coolant thermostat.
