Remove/Install
DANGER:
- Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.
- Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 degrees C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour
coolant into beverage bottles.
- Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.
1 Open cap with detent (2) or 2-stage cap (2a) expansion reservoir (1) or radiator.
NOTE:
- Cap with detent (2): Rotate cap with detent (2) carefully to first predetent, release pressure, then unscrew cap with detent (2).
- Model 163: Rotate 2-stage cap (2a) or 1-stage cap half a revolution in anti-clockwise direction, release pressure, then unscrew 2-stage
cap (2a) or 1-stage cap.
NOTE: Model 163 has no pulsed valves. Coolant is permanently flowing through the heating system heat exchanger.
Inspect
NOTE: In case of inadequate antifreeze content, Replace coolant against a separate job order.

AP20.00-P-2010GH Checking/Correcting Cooling System Level
Coolant level:
To check the coolant level, the vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped.
The coolant level should reach the COLD LEVEL mark in the reservoir.
Adding coolant:
If coolant has to be added, a 50/50 mixture of water and MB anticorrosion/antifreeze should be added.
After adding coolant, close cap until you hear it click a few times.
The drain plugs for the cooling system are located on the left and right side of the engine block directly above the engine mounts and at the bottom
of the radiator.
Warning!
^ Use extreme caution when opening the hood if there are any signs of steam or coolant leaking from the cooling system, or if the coolant
temperature gauge indicates that the coolant is overheated.
^ Do not remove pressure cap on coolant reservoir if engine temperature is above 194°F (90°C). Allow engine to cool down before removing
cap. The coolant reservoir contains hot fluid and is under pressure.
^ Using a rag, slowly open cap approximately 1/2 turn to relieve excess pressure. If opened immediately, scalding hot fluid and steam will be
blown out under pressure.
^ Do not spill antifreeze on hot engine parts. Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which may burn if it comes into contact with hot engine parts.

Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
TASK
Actuating electric suction-type fan.
DESIGN/FUNCTION
The ME-SFI control module actuates the fan steplessly through the electric suction-type fan (engine/AC) control module. The specified speed
of the fan is transmitted by the ME-SFI control module to the electric suction-type fan (engine/AC) control module by means of a pulse width
modulated signal. The ON/OFF ratio is 10-90%, the different ratios meaning e.g.
The status of the A/C or automatic A/C is transmitted by the instrument cluster through the CAN to the ME-SFI control module. The
specified speed of the fan is dependent on this status.
NOTE:
CAN-compatible instrument cluster required which is programmed accordingly with HHT to with/without A/C or automatic A/C.

- Installation: When installing a new radiator with integrated oil cooler for the power steering pump, a new fan shroud is necessary, if a
radiator without integrated oil cooler was installed beforehand.
12 Separate connector from fan and remove air intake grill (11).
NOTE: The rubber shock absorber (21) is designed to prevent vibrations which may occur between condenser and radiator (15) when
driving off-road.
NOTE: Place to the side with lines connected. Detach condenser at radiator.
NOTE: Installation:
- When Installing, the mounting studs of the radiator must be inserted into the rubber grommets of the bottom cross member.
- On Model 163.154 with Engine 112.942 prior to vehicle identification number 043553, additional operations must be carried out, if not
already done so, when installing a new radiator with integrated oil cooler for power steering pump.
DANGER:
- Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during
start-up or while running may result in contusions and burns
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving off by itself.
- Wear closed and close-fitting work clothes.
- Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation
Task
Detecting the coolant temperature and supplying information to the engine control module
Design
Plastic housing with an NTC resistor, 2-pin, angled plug connection.
Contact assignment at connector:
Contacts 1 and 2 engine control module.
Inserted into hole and sealed with O-ring.
Attached by means of spring clasp.
Function
The NTC resistor integrated in the coolant temperature sensor alters its electrical resistance in line with the coolant temperature. NTC means
Negative Temperature Coefficient, i.e, the electrical resistance becomes less as the temperature rises.
Example:
coolant temperature resistance
20 °C 3100 ohm ± 5%
80 °C 315 ohm ± 5%

Thermostat: Testing and Inspection
Test Coolant Thermostat
DANGER:
- Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.
- Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 degrees C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour
coolant into beverage bottles.
- Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection.
NOTE: Installation:
- Install new sealing ring.
- The coolant thermostat must not be removed from the housing. Otherwise it will be destroyed. The housing is supplied together with the
coolant thermostat for repair purposes.
Inspection
2 Heat coolant thermostat (1)
- Suspend coolant thermostat (1) from a wire in a vessel filled with water and heat the water.
CAUTION: For heating on no account use a welding torch or soldering torch as the sudden introduction of heat alters the structure
of the metal!
NOTE: The heating-up rate should be not more than 1 degrees C to 2 degrees C/min from about 8 degrees C below the start of opening of
the coolant thermostat.
4 Heat water to the fully open temperature of the thermostat (2) and then measure the stroke
NOTE: If the test values are not achieved, install a new coolant thermostat.
