CATALOGUE COURSE DESCRPTION

MATH 203 – Mathematics for Social Sciences I – 3.0 cr.


Polynomials, factoring, first- and second-degree equations, inequalities, absolute value,
Straight lines, Gaussian elimination, functions, graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions,
and differentiation.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the completion of this course, a student will be able to:


• Apply operations on polynomials;
• Factor polynomials;
• Solve first and second degree equations;
• Solve linear inequalities and equations of absolute values;
• Write the equation of a straight line;
• Use the properties of the slopes to determine the equation of parallel lines and perpendicular lines;
• Plot the graph of special functions in rectangle coordinates;
• Apply the symmetry and reflection to functions;
• Calculate the derivative of a function using the definition;
• Apply the rules of differentiation of the sum, difference, product, and quotient;
• Calculate lim f ( x) and lim f ( x) ;

• Test for continuity of a function at a point;
• Use Gaussian elimination to solve a linear system of equations;
• Apply the properties of the exponential and logarithmic functions;
• Solve logarithmic and exponential equations.

Grading Policy:
The assessment will be criterion-based.

COURSE POLICIES

• The grade for an unexcused missed Quiz will be a zero. However, upon presenting a valid excuse
within one week of the Quiz date, and after taking the approval of the course coordinator and instructor
a makeup exam will be done or the percentage distribution of the exams will be changed.
• The university policy regarding incomplete work and other issues will be followed.
(Check the AUB catalogue for details).
• Students are responsible for all the material presented online or in class, including announcements about
Course procedure.
• All announcements, extra sheets, syllabus…will be posted on Moodle.
• Only basic scientific calculators are allowed (Graphic and programmable calculators are NOT allowed)
• By default the two quizzes and the final exam will be on campus , but if the situation does not allow for it
and we continue online learning, the two quizzes and the final exam will be Moodle based with
respondus, and One to One short quizzes will be given after each exam.
