Let Us Study
jects
In the previous module you have learned that permutation refers to the different
possible arrangements of a set of objects, where order is important. You have also
learned about the methods of determining the number of permutations of objects
and solved problems involving permutations.

Can You Tell?

Direction: Identify each task whether order is important or not. Just write OII if
Order Is Important and ONI if Order Is Not Important on the space before each
number or in your answer sheet.

_____1. Entering PIN of your ATM card.

_____2. Winning in a swimming contest.
_____3. Opening a combination lock of a vault.
_____4. Selecting 3 posters to hang out of 6 different places.
_____5. Selecting 7 people to form a committee for contact tracing.
_____6. Drawing a set of 4 numbers in a lottery containing numbers 1 – 42.
_____7. Assigning rooms to parents who will get modules for their students.
_____8. Selecting 3 among 7 nurses to be assigned in an emergency room.
_____9. Choosing 5 questions to answer out of 15 questions in a test.
_____10. Choosing 4 books to borrow out of 7 books of his interest in the library.

Guide questions:
1. When can you say that order is important?
2. What are your key words in identifying order is not important?
3. How do you call those tasks where order is important?
4. How about those tasks where order is not important?

From the statements above, each situation which indicates that order is not
important is called combination.

Combination is the number of ways of selecting from a set of objects where

order is not important.

The number of combinations of n objects taken r at a time is denoted by:

'!
!((, )) = (!('%()! , 1 ≥ 3
r) =
In determining the combination of objects, you will have to identify the values of n,
the object, and r, the number of objects taken at a time, then simply substitute in
the formula.

3
Examples:
1. Evaluate 4(56, 7).
Solution: 1 = 14, 3 = 5
(!
!((, )) =
)! (( − ))!
14! 5! = (5)(4)(3)(2)(1)
!(14,5) =
5! (14 − 5)! )! *+ *.
Cancel: , ,
)! (,)(-) (/)(+)
(14)(13)(12)(11)(10)(9!)
!(14,5) = Multiply (14)(13)(11)
(5)(4)(3)(2)(1)(9!)

!(14,5) = 2 002

2. Find the value of n in 4(:, ;) = <=.

Solution:
1!
!(1, 3) =
3! (1 − 3)!

!(1, 2) = 78 )! = () − 1)() − 2)() − 3) … (2)(1)

!!
78 =
#!(!%#)! ('%+)!
Cancel: ('%+)!
'('%()('%#)!
78 = Multiplying (()(( − 1) = (+ − (
#!('%#)!

!! %! Cross multiplication: (78)(2) = 156

78 = #
156 = 1" − 1 Equate it to zero and factor
1" − 1 − 156 = 0
(1 + 12)(1 − 13) = 0
1 + 12 = 0 1 − 13 = 0 Equate the two factors to zero and
1 = −12 1 = 13 solve for n

Choose the positive value, therefore 1 = 13

Checking: : = 5A, B = ;

13!
!(13,2) =
2! (13 − 2)!

13(12)(11!) **!
!(13,2) = Cancel:
**!
2! (11!)
Multiply: (13)(12) = 156
156
!(13,2) =
2

!(13,2) = 78

4
3. Find r in 4(C, B) = 5;D
Solution:
!!
$ (&, () =
0!(!%0)!

1!
126 = 0!(1%0)! Substitute

Multiply: (126)()!)(9 − ))!

126[%! (9 − %)!] = 9!
9! Divide both sides by 126
)! (9 − ))! =
126
Multiply: (9)(8)(7)(6) = 3024
(9)(8)(7)(6)(5!)
)! (9 − ))! =
126
(3024)(5!) Divide:
#$"%
= 24
)! (9 − ))! = &"'
126

Express 24 as a factorial of a number

3! (9 − 3)! = (24) (5!)
3! (9 − 3)! = (4!) (5!) 4! = 24

3! = 4! E3 (9 − 3)! = (5!)
3=4
There are two values of r that will satisfy the value, to find the other value
use 1 − 3.
Since 1 = 9 F1G 3 = 4, HℎJ3JKE3J 9 − 4 = 5
3 = 4 E3 3 = 5

Checking: !(9, 3) = 126

3=4 3=5

9! 9!
!(9,4) = !(9,5) =
4! (9 − 4)! 5! (9 − 5)!

9(8)(7)(6)(5!) 9(8)(7)(6)(5!)
!(9,4) = !(9,5) =
(4!)(5!) (5!)(4!)

3 024 3 024
!(9,4) = !(9,5) =

4. The barangay functionaries created groups to distribute the food packs
to the indigent families during pandemic. In how many ways can they
form a group of 4 members from 8 people?
Solution:
1 = 8 and 3 = 4

/!
- (/, %) =
%! (/ − %)!

8! Substitute: 1 = 8 and 3 = 4
! (8,4) =
4! (8 − 4)! Cancel:

(8)(7)(6)(5)(4!) Multiply (8)(7)(6)(5) = 1680

! (8,4) =
4! (4)!
4! = (4)(3)(2)(1); 4! = 24
&'($ &'($
!(8,4) = Divide: = 70
"% "%

!(8,4) = 70

5. From the 8 pillows and 6 blankets, in how many ways can one select 2
pillows and 3 blankets to give as a gift?
Solution:
Since there are 2 objects: pillows and blanket, solve it separately:
PILLOWS: ( = 8, ) = 2 BLANKETS: 1 = 6, 3 = 3
8! 6!
!(8,2) = !(6,3) =
2! (8 − 2)! 3! (6 − 3)!

(8)(7)(6!) (6)(5)(4)(3!)
!(8,2) = !(6,3) =
(2!)(6!) (3!)(3!)

56 120
!(8,2) = !(6,3) =
2 6

!(8,2) = 28 !(6,3) = 20

Applying the Fundamental Counting Principle, multiply the two results

L = !(8,2) ∙ !(6,3)
L = (28)(20)
N = 7DO PQRS

6. Rita has several plants in her garden. She decided to give at least 5 plants to
her friend from her 8 favorite flowers. In how many ways can she do it?
Solution:
At least 5 means, Rita may give 5, 6, 7 or 8 plants to her friend.

1 = 8, 3 = 5 1 = 8, 3 = 6 1 = 8, 3 = 7
8! 8! 8!
!(8,5) = ! (8,6) = !(8,7) =
5! (8 − 5)! 6! (8 − 6)! 7! (8 − 7)!

(8)(7)(6)(5!) (8)(7)(6!) (8)(7!)

!(8,5) = ! (8,6) = !(8,7) =
(5!)(3!) (6!)(2!) (7!)(1!)

336 56 4(=, <) = =

!(8,5) = ! (8,6) =
6 2
Note:
4(=, 7) = 7D 4(=, D) = ;= 4(=, =) = 5

To find the final answer add the results.

L = !(8,5) + !(8,6) + !(8,7) + !98,8)
L = 56 + 28 + 8 + 1
L = 93 ways
