4 — THE MOUNTAIN ASTROLOGER
Letter from the Operations Manager
Dear Readers:
The season of the “witch” is upon us, which means in the Northern Hemisphere we
are spiraling down into the sanctuary of darkness. Unfortunately, in our Western cul-
ture, we use language that implies darkness is sinister instead of the true, velvety domain
of the goddess. This sacred cave acts as the container for new life to be cradled before

Operations it is time to bloom again. And it is important to remember that there is a vast amount
Manager of richness that comes with quiet waiting and amble nourishment available when we let
ourselves be held by it.
This is the time of year when the veils between worlds are thinnest, when we can
reach across and connect with our loved ones who have slipped to the other side. When
Tem passed away last year in July of 2019, he said to me, “Carry the torch my friend,”
yet it felt more like a “Hail Mary” pass at the end of the game. We weren’t sure exactly
what the road forward would look like. We had the option to close up shop or band to-
gether and make it happen. As you all know — because you are reading this now — our
small little team chose to band together. Grief stricken, but full of love, we scrambled to
figure out how to fill Tem’s un-fillable shoes.
Tem was one of the most good-humored men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
While the events of this year have sent tidal waves of grief across the world and gripped
the collective with fear and uncertainty, it is precisely during such times that we are encour-
aged to seek meaning in the madness and hang on to our sense of humor. While humor in
the face of horror is a truly daunting task, it is the mark of a skilled Zen master.
I believe that laughter is always the best medicine even when the only thing on the
menu is dark humor. To guide people through difficult Saturn transits I often use the
analogy of the Bogart from Harry Potter. Like Saturn, this creature takes the shape of
whatever we fear most, and the only way to defeat it is to turn it into something that makes
us laugh. The works of spiritual entertainer and philosopher, Alan Watts, have always
helped me the most in this endeavor. So, even if this feels impossible some days, I encour-
age all our readers to experiment and play with it. Exercise your funny bones as often as
you can during these trying times.
This issue marks our seventh since we lost Tem, which comes with its own Saturnian
resonance. I cannot express deeply enough, my gratitude for the whole TMA team (old and
new), the entire astrological community, and of course you, our subscribers! Your encour-
agement, heartfelt words, and support have been everything.
With infinite love and wyrd-ness,
— Rae

24 — THE MOUNTAIN ASTROLOGER
I
t was like being hit on the head by a
meteorite. The sky doesn’t hold a lot of
surprises anymore. The stars stay fixed in
their seats, eclipses are entirely predictable,
even new comets can be spotted half a solar
system away. But what I saw above me early
in 2020 rocked my universe more than any-
thing I’d observed in a lifetime of stargazing.
Something was wrong with Orion!
Nestled beneath Taurus and Gemini,
Orion is one of the most spectacular con-
stellations in the sky, the source of major
myths in practically every culture that’s ever
existed. But that night it was obvious that
Betelgeuse, the brilliant red star marking
Orion’s shoulder, was no longer brilliant at
all. Far dimmer than usual, fiery Betelgeuse
was fading away before our eyes!
Betelgeuse’s vanishing act attracted the
attention of astronomers around the globe
who first guessed it was collapsing as pre-
lude to going supernova. But when it began
regaining some of its former luster in mid
February, they decided there’d be no nova
after all; the superstar’s light had simply
been blocked by passing galactic gas clouds.
Still, other scientists frankly admitted they
weren’t sure what was going on.
Here is the part that took my breath
away. In the Vedic tradition, Betelgeuse
is called Ardra. Ardra is one of the 27 nak-
shatras (lunar asterisms) on which Vedic
astrology is based. When a nakshatra starts
acting weird, that’s a big deal.1
Soberingly, the deity associated with
Ardra is Rudra, “the ruddy one,” a fundamen-
tally destructive power tightly associated with
disease and epidemics. For 5,000 years, the
famous Maha Mrityunjaya mantra has been
SUPERNOVA
chanted by Hindus (and now increasingly by
Western yoga students) for freedom from
disease and premature death. This power-
ful mantra is specifically addressed to Rudra,
2020
who appears in the sky as Ardra/Betelgeuse.
It’s one of those mind-blowing coincidences
that just as the whole world was first threat-
ened by the coronavirus, Betelgeuse started
flexing his muscles!
The US
But there’s more to it than that.
In ancient Vedic texts, Rudra is called
