(1) Solve the following systems of equations by using Gauss-elimination method.

(i) x + y + z = −2, 3x + 3y − z = 6, x − y + z = −1.


(ii) x1 − 2x2 + 3x3 = −2, −x1 + x2 − 2x3 = 3, 2x1 − x2 + 3x3 = 1.
(iii) x1 + 2x2 + x3 + 3x4 = 0, 2x1 + 4x2 + 4x4 = 0, x1 + 2x2 + 3x3 + 5x4 = 0,
2x1 + 4x2 + 4x4 = 0.
(iv) −2x1 + x2 − x3 = 4, x1 + 2x2 + 3x3 = 13, 3x1 + x3 = −1.
(v) 7x1 +2x2 −2x3 −4x4 +3x5 = 8, −3x1 −3x2 +2x4 +x5 = −1, 4x1 −x2 −8x3 +20x5 =
1.

(2) By using Gauss-Jordan elimination method find the inverse of the following matrices,
if it exists.

(3) Find a basis for the vector spaces spanned by the following sets. (Hint: Form matrix
with given vectors in a set as row vectors.)

(i) {(2, 1, 0), (1, −1, 1), (4, 1, 2), (2, −3, 3)}
(ii) {(1, 2, 3, 4), (0, 1, −1, 2), (1, 4, 1, 8), (3, 7, 8, 14)}
(iii) {(2, 2, 1), (1, −1, 1), (1, 0, 1)}

(4) Determine whether the vectors (2, −7, 1, 11) and (4, 3, 0, 3) belong to the span of
three vectors u = (1, −2, 1, 3), v = (1, 2, −1, 1), w = (2, 3, 1, −1) in R4 .

(5) For what values of k the system kx + y = 1, x + ky = 1 has (i) no solution (ii) one
solution and (iii) infinitely many solutions?

(6) Find the values of a for which the following system of equations is inconsistent.
x1 + 5x2 − 3x3 = −4; −x1 − 4x2 + x3 = 3; −2x1 − 7x2 = a.

(7) If w1 , w2 , w3 are linearly independent vectors, then show that w2 − w3 , w1 − w3 ,


w1 − w2 are linearly dependent.

(8) If w1 , w2 , w3 are linearly independent vectors, then show that w2 + w3 , w1 + w3 ,


w1 + w2 are linearly independent.

(9) For matrices given in Problem (4) of Assignment 1, verify rank-nullity theorem and
find a basis for the null space.

(10) Use rank to determine whether the given set of vectors is linearly independent.

(i) (4, 5, 1), (3, 0, 2), (1, 1, 1).


(ii) (1, 2, 3), (3, 2, 1), (2, 1, 3).
(iii) (2, 1, 1, 3), (4, −1, 2, −1), (8, 1, 4, 5).
(11) For what values of k the following sets of vectors form a basis for R3 , or for what
values of k the following sets of vectors are linearly independent?

(i) {(k, 1, 1), (0, 1, 1), (k, 0, k)}.


(ii) {(1, k, 5), (1, −3, 2), (2, −1, 1)}.
(iii) {(k, 1 − k, k), (0, 3k − 1, 2), (−k, 1, 0)}.

(12) (i) If A and B are symmetric matrices then show that AB − BA is skew symmetric.
(ii) If A and B are invertible, commutative (AB = BA) and symmetric then show
that AB −1 and A−1 B −1 are also symmetric.
