Enhancing Productivity at HPCL Jodhpur

This document discusses enhancing productivity at HPCL's Jodhpur LPG Plants. The objectives are to increase the speed of processes like conveyors and carousels, reduce rejections, improve product pressure, and better align employees. Research methods will include interviews, observations, and analyzing primary data from plant equipment and records as well as secondary sources. Successful implementation could increase productivity from the current 1631 cylinders per hour, reducing costs through less manpower needs and equipment maintenance challenges.

Introduction to HPCL and LPG SBU

HPCL is a navratna company of Government of India. Company comes under Forbes 2000 and
Global Fortune 500. HP Gas keeps the fire burning in millions of Indian homes and its come
under HPC Brand.

With the liberalization of Indian economy and thrust on serving every household with clean fuel,
LPG is termed as essential commodity by the Government of India.
At present, HPCL having 48 LPG Bottling Plants throughout the country with a total capacity of
over 7168 TMT per Annum.

In FY 18-19, Jodhpur LPG Plant has done bottling of 48.41 lakhs cylinders with 71.7 TMT of
LPG.

At Jodhpur LPG Plant, we are handling below types (7 types) of cylinders:

(A) 5 Kg Domestic
(B) 5 Kg ND
(C) 14.2 Kg
(D) 19 Kg
(E) 35 Kg
(F) 47.5 Kg
(G) 425 Kg

Productivity of any Plant is major criteria for evaluation of Plant Performance. Few plants like
Bhopal, Hazarwadi etc. are achieving productivity of 1800 Cylinder per Hour. However,
Productivity of Jodhpur LPG Plant was 1631 Cylinder per hour for FY 2018-19.

Improvement in productivity brings cost reduction by the way of Saving of Manpower Cost,
Electricity Cost etc.

Problem Statement:

Presently, Jodhpur LPG Plant has productivity of 1620 Cylinder per hour and plant required
extra manpower due to increase of market demand. Workers complain of fatigue and also lot of
challenges for maintenance of the critical equipments. We can reduce extra man power and
above maintenance challenges after improvement of productivity.

Need for the research

 Speed of the chain conveyor system.

 Low Carousel Speed
 Rejection of check scale
 Aligning all the Employees
 Aligning of Contract Labor
 Low Product Pressure
 To investigate factors leading to poor workmanship
Objectives
 Efficiency of Carousal
 Decrease the Check Scale e the Check Weigh rejection
 Increase the Conveyor Speed
 To improve the Product Pressure

Research Methodology

The research will exploit qualitative methods which will have a focal point on interviews, focus
groups, review of previous documents, structured interviews, surveys, reviews, observation and
numeric information. To formulate the hypothesis, the research will exploit primary inductive
process.

The qualitative aspect of the research will give emphasis on mathematical, numerical as well as

statistical data. This data will be attained by the use of surveys and questionnaires by exploiting

computational techniques with pre-existing data from the project as well as others already

completed.

Source of Data
The research will dwell on both primary and secondary data sources.

Primary data sources

 Feedback attained from workers, contractors and civil and architectural industrial experts
 From the Carousel Dashboard
 From the Manual record maintained at plant

Secondary research
This information will be attained from the ministry of civil works under the jurisprudence of the

location of interest

Expected outcome

Productivity has direct impact on Bottling cost in HPCL. By successful implementation of the
project, we can reduce the bottling cost of the Plant by great extent. Expected scope of this
project is to find the area of improvement and implementation of the same to achieve the
Productivity to 1700 Cylinder per hour.
