EDUC 109- PRELIM ACTIVITY 1

1. What are the critical attributes of 21st Century education? Explain them.

The critical attributes of 21st Century education encompass a set of skills,

competencies, and pedagogical approaches that aim to prepare students for success in a rapidly
changing global landscape. These attributes are as follows:
1. Reading literacy: The ability to read, understand, and analyze complex texts, including
digital media.
2. Information literacy: The ability to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively
and ethically.
3. Technological literacy: The ability to use technology tools and resources to access,
analyze, and communicate information.
4. Skills for personal knowledge building: The ability to learn independently, collaborate
with others, and apply knowledge to new situations.
5. Oral literacy and numeracy: The ability to communicate effectively in spoken and
written language, as well as to understand and use mathematical concepts.

needs, and providing a personalized learning experience.
9. 21st Century skills: The skills needed to become productive members of society,
including critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
10. Project-based and research-driven: The use of knowledge and skills in research, such
as self-directed activities, learning projects, investigatory projects, capstones, and other research-
based output.
11. Relevant and rigorous: The use of current and relevant information linked to real-life
situations and contexts, ensuring that learning is rigorous and applicable to the real world
These attributes are not exhaustive, and the evolution of education continues to
adapt to the changing needs of society. However, these attributes serve as a foundation for 21st
Century education, aiming to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world.

2. Describe a 21st Century teacher and discuss some innovative tools for learning.

A 21st Century teacher is one who is proficient in using technology and

innovative tools to engage students in a dynamic learning environment. They are skilled in using
digital learning tools such as RSS readers, social media, cloud-based word processors, and
YouTube channels. They create lessons that connect different subjects to enhance learning
experiences and incorporate current global issues and concerns into their curriculum. They help
students develop the skills to adapt to a rapidly changing world, focus on students' needs, and
provide a personalized learning experience. They also help students develop critical thinking,
problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills, and use project-based and
research-driven approaches to enhance learning. Some innovative tools for learning include
Google Classroom, Edmodo, Kahoot, Flipgrid, Padlet, Socrative, Nearpod, and Quizlet. These
tools help teachers create engaging and interactive learning experiences that prepare students for
success in a rapidly changing world. By fostering deeper learning through the purposeful
integration of rigorous academic content with experiences that intentionally cultivate the skills,
mindsets, and literacies needed for students to become lifelong learners and contributors in our
ever-changing world, 21st Century teachers help students thrive in the 21st century.

3. Explain how you can integrate 21st Century education in the curriculum.

Integrating 21st Century education in the curriculum involves incorporating the

eight critical attributes of 21st Century education into the teaching and learning process. These
attributes include integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum, technologies and multimedia,
global classrooms, creating/adapting to constant personal and social change and lifelong
learning, student-centered learning, 21st Century skills, project-based and research-driven
approaches, and relevance and rigor. To integrate 21st Century education in the curriculum,
teachers should identify the desired outcomes of units of study in key subject areas and prioritize
content standards. They should also explore grouping students together for activities and projects
to encourage collaboration and teamwork. Teachers should also focus on developing 21st
Century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication, and teach
students how to read and understand different resources available online. Additionally, teachers
should incorporate inquiry-based learning strategies, media literacy, and real-life experiences in
the context of core academic subjects. By integrating these attributes and strategies into the
curriculum, students can develop the skills and competencies they need to thrive in the 21st
century and become lifelong learners and contributors in our ever-changing world
