Simultaneous Equations Handout

1) The document discusses solving systems of simultaneous linear equations in two variables. It introduces the concept of linear equations in two variables and systems of simultaneous linear equations. 2) It describes two methods for solving systems of simultaneous linear equations: substitution method and elimination method. The substitution method involves expressing one variable in terms of the other from one equation and substituting it into the other equation. 3) Examples are provided to illustrate solving systems of two linear equations using the substitution method. The key steps are to express one variable in terms of the other, substitute it into the second equation, solve the resulting equation for the remaining variable, and then back-substitute to find the value of the other variable.

Solution : Substituting x = 3 and y = 1 in the equ atio n

Simultaneous Linear Equations In Two Variables
Two linear equatwns in two variables x and y
are said to form a system of simultaneo
linear equatwns if each of them is satisfied by 1
the same pai r of values of x and y.
Exa mp le : Consider the system of line ar equatio
ns
X + y = 13, X - y = 3
By sub stitu tion , we find tha t each of thes e equ
ations is sati sfie d by the values x =8an
y= 5.
Hence, the above equations form a system of
sim ulta neo us line ar equations in x andy.
A pai r of values of x and y satisfying each
of the equ atio ns in a given system of tw
simultaneous equations in x and y is called a
solu tion of the system. ·
Thus, in the above example, x = 8, y = 5 is a
solution of the sys tem of linear equations
X + y = 13, X - y = 3.

Exa mp le 2. Sho w tha t x = 5, y = - 2 is a solu

tion of the system of linear equations :
4x + 3y = 14, 9x - 5y = 55.
Sol utio n : The given equations are :

4x + 3y = 14
9x - 5y = 55 ,,,(ii
Put ting x = 5 and y = - 2 in (i), we get :
L.H.S. = 4 x 5 + 3 x (-2) = (20 - 6) = 14 = R.H

Put ting x = 5 and y = - 2 in (ii), we get :
L.H.S. = 9 x 5 - 5 x (-2) = (45 + 10) = 55 =
R.H.S.
Thu s, x = 5 and Y = - 2 sati sfy bot h (i) and

Hence, x = 5, y = - 2 is a solution of the give
