PROBLEM SOLVING
Direction: Solve the following using GRSA method 5pts each)

1. Calculate the latent heat of fusion for a body of mass of 40 g at 20°C if it absorbs heat at 80°C.
It is given that the specific latent heat of steam is 540 cal/g and the specific heat of the body is
0.5 cal/g °C.

2. Calculate the mass of steam getting converted into water given that the specific latent heat of
water is 533 cal/g and the latent heat of fusion is 700 cal.
Given:
Specific latent heat of water (L_water) = 533 cal/g
Latent heat of fusion (L_fusion) = 700 cal
Required:
Mass of steam getting converted into water
Solution:
L_fusion = m * L_water
700 cal = m * 533 cal/g
M = 700 cal / 533 cal/g
M ≈ 1.314 g
Answer:
The mass of steam getting converted into water is approximately 1.314 g.

3. Calculate the latent heat of fusion for a body of mass 30 g if its specific latent heat of steam is
540 cal/g and the heat absorbed by it is 200 calories.
Given:
Mass (m) = 30 g
Heat absorbed (Q) = 200 calories
Specific latent heat of steam (L) = 540 cal/g
Required:
Latent heat of fusion (L)
Solution:
Q = mL
200 cal = 30g * L
L = 200 cal / 30g
L = 6.67 cal/g

Answer:
The latent heat of fusion for the body is 6.67 cal/g.

4. If a liquid uses 50 Joules of heat to vaporize 100 grams of liquid, then what would be the
enthalpy of vaporization?
Given:
Heat (Q) = 50 J
Mass (m) = 100 g
Required:
Enthalpy of vaporization (H)
Solution:
Q=H*m
50 J = H * 100 g
H = 50 J / 100 g
H = 0.5 J/g
Answer:
The enthalpy of vaporization is 0.5 J/g.

5. A 15.75 g of iron absorbs 1086.75 J of heat energy, and its temperature changes from 25°C to
175°C. Calculate the specific heat capacity of iron.
Given:
Mass (m) = 15.75 g
Heat absorbed (Q) = 1086.75 J
Initial temperature (Ti) = 25°C
Final temperature (Tf) = 175°C

Required:
Specific heat capacity of iron (c)

Solution:
Q = mcΔT
1086.75 J = 15.75g * c * (175°C - 25°C)
1086.75 J = 15.75g * c * 150°C
c = 1086.75 J / (15.75g * 150°C)
c ≈ 0.48 J/g°C

Answer:
The specific heat capacity of iron is approximately 0.48 J/g°C.

6. To what temperature will a 50 g piece of glass raise if it absorbs 5275 J of heat and its specific
heat capacity is 0.50 J°C? The initial temperature of the glass is 20.0°C
Given:
Mass (m) = 50 g
Heat absorbed (Q) = 5275 J
Initial temperature (Ti) = 20.0°C
Specific heat capacity (c) = 0.50 J/g°C
Required:
Final temperature (Tf)
Solution:
Q = mcΔT
5275 J = 50g * 0.50 J/g°C * ΔT
ΔT = 5275 J / (50g * 0.50 J/g°C)
ΔT = 211°C

Tf = Ti + ΔT
Tf = 20.0°C + 211°C
Tf = 231.0°C

Answer:
The final temperature of the glass will be 231.0°C.
