ACTIVITY TITLE: Case Analysis
CASE STORY TITLE: The Children of Sitio Mabolon
Conflict Identification
While the broad problem involved in Sitio Mabolon is child malnutrition, there are also other factors related to both
the tribe’s proximity and accessibility to government services as well as the tribe’s attitude toward these issues.
To elaborate on the latter two conflicts, I believe that it is because of the indigenous tribe’s beliefs that the issue of
child malnutrition has become this significant. Not only are the children not fed if they are sick— “living like a dog”,
according to Manong Pedro—they are even described as taking guidance from the village “albularyo” or folk healer,
among other terms. On top of the fact that the tribe is geographically distant from any services that could help, the
situation has only grown increasingly dire.
Overall, the needs of the youth in Sitio Mabolon are greater than simply child malnutrition, but possibly even extend
to that of child neglect and uninformed preventative action.
Plan of Action
It is hard to imagine a plan of action that would be brief enough to write for this analysis, but I have nevertheless
considered a handful of possible endeavors.
Above all, the welfare of the children residing in Sitio Mabolon is of utmost priority. While the primary aid may come
in the form of further intensified outreach and perhaps even the construction of various welfare service facilities
near the area, I believe that it is best to properly educate the members of the indigenous tribe both on how to
attend to their children’s wellbeing and on the underlying scientific factors that may cause as well as prevent these
issues from reaching such an extreme state in the first place.
Overall, with this plan in mind, it may be difficult to execute but I believe those greater efforts to be absolutely worth
it. The lives of children both present and future are at stake if this issue is not nipped in the bud as soon as possible.
Reflection
Of all of the things I felt while reading this case, the most intense emotion among them was unbelievable anger.
While being uninformed might be forgivable, given that whoever happens to be uninformed is willing to learn, I still
found the behavior of the indigenous tribe toward its children to be absolutely deplorable. What events or situations
would have led to such methods as simply not feeding your child when they’re sick being considered both the norm
and the best way to go about this issue? I simply cannot fathom such a mindset springing out of nowhere.
It is my hope that, given it is a story, such a situation isn’t true for any location in this world, but for all I know it could
possibly be the most common. Regardless, I understand that the situation could be more complicated, and it isn’t
purely the fault of the people that their children as so terribly taken care of.
