Animal behaviourists used! to think that a dog’s bark was simply a way of (21)
attracting/ catching/ grabbing (thu hút) attention. Now a new study suggests that dogs
have specific barks, and that they vary the pitch and pace of these to (22) convey
different messages. The scientists who carried (23) out (carry out: thực hiện) the research
are now suggesting that dogs usually use high-pitched single barks when they are
separated (24) from (tách khỏi) their owners and a lowers, harsher superbark when
strangers move towards them or the doorbell rings.
During their research, the scientists also wondered what (25) other (adj) abilities dogs
possessed; for example, were they (26) able to recognize quantity? To test this, the dogs
were first shown treats before a screen was lowered so that the treats were out of (27)
sight. Then the treats were either left as they were, added to (28) or reduced. If a treat
was added or taken away, the dogs looked at them for longer, presumably because the
numbers did not (29) satisfy/ meet/ fulfill their expectations. The scientists concluded
that dogs know they are receiving fewer treats because they have a basic mathematical
ability that enables them to tell when one pile of objects is bigger than another. This
ability may be present because dogs are descended from wolves, which not only have a
large neo-cortex - the brain’s centre of reasoning - but live in large social groups. This
mathematical ability could have been used to work (30) out (tính toán) how many
enemies and allies they had in a pack.

The role of grandparents in children’s upbringing
The word grandparents is descriptive of the unique dual parenting role that this
generation assumes. It emphasises the vital part they play in family life. With a wealth of
old world experience behind them, and with the unique ability to metamorphose from
advisers or (31. MEDIATE) mediators (người trung gian) into listeners or friends, they can
offer support and (32. STABLE) stability (sự ổn định) (n) in an ever-changing world.
The (33. LIE) underlying (adj: quan trọng) sense of responsibility that goes with this is
tremendous. Grandparents perform a (34. BALANCE) balancing (adj: cân bằng) act
between the needs of their adult children and those of their grandchildren. This role is
varied. It is imperial at times, muted at others. It goes underground whenever required,
but it is solid and absolutely (35. DEPEND) dependable (adj: có thể trông cậy được)
Grandparents often bridge the gap between parents and their children. (36. REBEL)
rebellious (adj: nổi loạn), independent children who are trying to find their feet are almost
always at loggerheads with their parents. The role of grandparents can be very important
provided they act as (37. PART) impartial (adj: công bằng) judges and are able to convey
this feeling to both parties. Grandchildren prefer to listen to their grandparents rather than
their parents, who often find themselves up against a brick wall.
One important thing, which seems to be missing in the lives of children today, is a
sense of family, values, beliefs and principles. This is where the grandparents step in.
However, instilling beliefs and values is not as easy as it was fifty or sixty years ago.
Then, no questions were asked and there was an implicit sense of trust. With changing
times and changing (38. LOOK) outlook (n) quan điểm, children have started to question
the (39. VALID) validity (n: sự hiệu lực) of everything around them. Globalisation has
eroded their sense of belonging and weakened (40. IDENTITY) identification (n: sự nhận
diện, bản sắc) with their roots.

"Let them be free” is the golden rule for child-rearing in the Netherlands. No wonder

But the total lack of discipline or even correction of badly behaved kids in the
