The Impact of Facebook on High School Students’ Performance
Research Rationale
Basing on this research, its goal is to investigate The Impact of Facebook on Students’
Performance. I will perform a far-reaching assessment on the subject matter using different
sources in an attempt to aid me to understand ways in which Facebook impact high school
students’ performance. Statistics have shown that currently, Facebook is the most popular
social platform used by students. Students, particularly high school and college students have
been found to be proactive users spending between one to two hours every day on Facebook
chatting and socializing with friends. My research topic is related to the core reading
Facebook has Transformed My Student's Writing for the Better in the sense that it investigates
the impact of Facebook on high school students’ performance. The objective of this research
is to shed more light to the public especially high school students, parents, teachers and
scholars regarding how Facebook impacts students’ academic performance. During this
research, I will utilize the following research questions that will act as my guide to ensure I
comprehensively investigate all the aspects that are related to the core reading.
Research Questions:
1. How has Facebook impacted the academic performance of high school students?
2. What should be done to avoid the negative impacts of Facebook on high school
students’?
Jiang 2
3. Is Facebook suitable for high school students?

interaction has to be regulated by educators to avoid the negative impact of leaner’s
disruptive behaviors.
The Stance: Barnard aims to enlighten parents and teachers about the importance of ICT to
students, but it should be regulated to avoid a negative impact because of learners disruptive
behaviors.

Jiang 8
The Stance: Toker and Meltem make a stance that there is a need for learning instructions to
employ technology in teaching and learning to help improve students’ performance.
The Use: This article is relevant to my research because it displays how technological
innovation is vital in teaching and learning.
Topic Exploration
Considering the above sources, it indicates that advancement in information and
communication technology particularly social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook
and the advent of the internet have greatly improved learning (Anwar et al). Indeed,
Facebook has become the most prevalent social networking website among college and high
school students. As a result, Facebook has enabled students to interact with other students as
well as their teachers to share academic information (Bernard). Similarly, Simmons states that
through his interaction with his students it has dramatically helped to improve his students’
writing skills.
On the other hand, Thuseethan and Kuhanesan argue that while social networking
sites have several positive effects, it also hurts students' performance. Extensive presence on
Facebook and Twitter can result in dangerous effects on student’s productivity as well as task
performance (Arif, and Saima). Spending long hours on Facebook and other social
networking sites has been found to reduce students’ academic performance and their grades.
In addition, Facebook is also a destroyer of students’ esteem whereby students particularly
those in middle school have been bullied hence eroding their writing conventions.
To conclude, this paper is vital to my research topic in the sense that it provides me
with appropriate and relevant information that will help to respond to my research questions.
Although information and communication novelty primarily social networking sites are a
significant milestone to education as it boosts students and teachers interaction, it also has
Jiang 9
some negativities. It is imperative for parent and educators to regulate students’ presence on
social sites to avoid spending much time on Facebook at the cost of time for studies. I would
suggest that my readers especially high school students and teachers to use social networking
sites effectively not to interfere with their academic performance.
