Assignment I Solution (2023-2024)

This document provides the solution and marking scheme for a design assignment of a reinforced concrete beam. The summary is: 1) The beam is simply supported with a clear span of 26 feet carrying dead and live loads. Five #10 bars are provided at 16 inches effective depth. 2) Calculations show two bars can be discontinued at 6.01 feet from midspan, meeting the required development length. 3) Checks at the support where moment is zero and bar size are adequate. 4) For the discontinued bars, four #3 stirrups at 4 inches are specified as binder bars within 1.33 feet of the cut ends.

CE-41024, Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures I

First Semester, Assignment I
Solution and Marking Scheme
Question The beam of Figure-1 is simply supported with clear span of 26 ft and is to carry a
distributed dead load of 0.615 k/ft, not including its own weight, and live load of 1.62 k/ft,
unfactored, in service. Consider the weight of the beam. The reinforcement consists of five
No.10 (No.32) bars at 16 in; effective depth, two of which is to be discontinued where no longer
needed. Material strength specified are fy = 60,000 psi and fc' = 5,000 psi. No.3 (No.10) stirrups
are used with clear cover of 1.5 in at spacing less than ACI Code maximum.
a. Calculate at the point where the two bars can be discontinued.
b. Check to be sure that adequate embedded length is provided for continued and
discontinued bars.
c. Check special requirements at the support, where Mu = 0.
d. If No.3 bars are used for lateral reinforcement, specify special reinforcing details
(binder stirrups) in the vicinity where the No.10 (No.32) bars is cut off.
Hint: 1. Use the effective span = 26 ft because of the lack of support-width.
2. Use Table A-10 of Appendix A to check the development length of the bars. Use
case (a) or (b) in your calculation, so no need to check the case.
3. In your calculations, no need to revise beam size but the required steel area should
be calculated to obtain excess amount of reinforcement.

Thus ϕ = 0.9 is valid.
Two bars is discontinued where no longer needed. C.O % = 40%
From Graph A-2, Theory C.O Pt = 0.18L = 0.18×26 = 4.68 ft (from mid span)
Extension length = d = 16 in
Extension length = 12db = 12×1.27 = 15.24 in
Thus, use extension length = 16 in = 1.33 ft
Actual C.O Pt = 4.68 + 1.33 = 6.01 ft (from mid span)

For discontinued bar,
Provided length = 6.01 ft > ld = 3.521 ft
For continuing bar,
The continuing bars will be extended to a point 10 in from the support face.

Provided length = 13 - 4.68 + = 9.15 ft > ld = 3.521 ft (OK)

Thus the diameter of the bar is small enough.
