Assignment 1 2024

This document contains an assignment with 4 questions related to turbomachinery. Question 1 asks the student to calculate the diameter and width of an impeller given specifications of a centrifugal pump running at 1000 rpm with a flow rate of 0.2 m3/s and head of 20 m. Question 2 asks the student to calculate the speed, power, and flow rate ratio given specifications of a scale model and prototype centrifugal pump. Question 3 asks the student to calculate the outer diameter and rotational speed of an axial impeller given specifications such as inlet and outlet blade angles and hydraulic efficiency. Course Name: Turbomachinery

Course Code: EM 550/EM 552
TASK: Assignment 1
DUE DATE: 18/03/2023
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions, illustrate where necessary.

Question 1
A centrifugal pump is running at 1000 rpm and working against a head of 20 m. the rate of
flow through the pump is 0.2 𝑚3 /𝑠. The outlet vane angle of impeller is 45° and velocity of
flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s. If the hydraulic efficiency of the pump is 80 percent, calculate the
diameter and width of impeller at outlet. [25]

Question 2
In order to predict the performance of large a large centrifugal pump, a scale model of one-six
size was made with the following specifications: power = 25 kW; Head H = 7m; speed N = 1000
r.p.m. if the prototype pump has to work against a head of 22 m,
Calculate
i. Its working speed, [10,5]
ii. The power required to drive it and [5]
iii. The ratio of the flow rates handled by the two pumps. [5]

Question 3

The inner diameter of an axial impeller is Di = 0.625 Do. If the rotational speed is 1470 rpm and
at the inlet there is no pre-rotation. The hydraulic efficiency is 85%, the head is 6 m. The specific
work along the mean radius is constant. The inlet and outlet blade angle are 9° 𝑎𝑛𝑑 12°
respectively. Find the outer diameter, rotational speed, and power developed. [25]

Question 4

Calculate the required pipe diameter to avoid cavitation, if the pump delivers 𝑄 =
30 𝑑𝑚3 ⁄𝑠 𝑜𝑓 water from a closed tank, where the pressure (above the water level) is p = 40
kPa. The equivalent pipe length on the suction side is 5m, the friction coefficient is 𝜆 = 0.02,
the suction flange of the pump is 3m below the water level. The vapour pressure at the water
temperature is 2.8 kPa. The required net positive suction head is NPSHr = 3.2 m. [25]
