Angle of Elevation and Depression

This document provides information and examples about angles of elevation and depression using trigonometric ratios to solve real-life problems involving right triangles. It defines angles of elevation as the upward angle measured from the ground to an object, while angles of depression are downward angles. Several example problems are given involving finding distances, heights, or angles using trigonometric ratios like SOH-CAH-TOA and information given about one or two sides of right triangles along with an included angle. Readers are then given performance tasks to solve word problems involving right triangles graphically and showing their work.

ANGLE OF
ELEVATION AND
DEPRESSION
ANGLE OF
ELEVATION
The angle of elevation of an object as seen by an observer is
the angle between the horizontal and the line from the object
to the observer's eye (the line of sight).
NOTE: The angle of elevation is always measured from
the ground up. It is an upward angle from a
horizontal line. It is always inside the triangle.
Example:
Find the measure of the distance from the girl
to the boy at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

The distance from

the girl to the boy
at the top of the
Tower is 642m.

x = 642 m

Example: A lighthouse casts a 67-meter shadow. If the angle of elevation from
the tip of the shadow to the top of the light house is 70º, how tall is the
lighthouse ? Round to the nearest tenth of a meter.
Opposite = x Adjacent = 67

ANGLE OF DEPRESSION
If the object is below the level of the observer, then the angle
between the horizontal and the observer's
line of sight is called the angle of depression.
NOTE: The angle of depression is always OUTSIDE the
triangle. It is never inside the triangle. It is a downward
angle from a horizontal line.
Example: A plane is flying at an altitude of 14,500 ft. The angle of depression
from the control tower to the plane is 15°. What is the horizontal distance from the
plane to the tower? Round to the nearest foot.

Opposite = 14, 500 ft Adjacent = x

EXAMPLE: From the top of a fire tower, a forest ranger sees his partner on the
ground at an angle of depression of 40°. If the tower is 45 feet in height, how
far is the partner from the base of a tower? To the nearest tenth of a foot.

x = 53ft
1. A tower is 15.24m high. At a certain distance away from the
tower, a man on the level ground observes that the angle of
elevation of the top of the tower is 41. How far is the man from the
tower?
2. A statue is put on the top of a 1.8m - high stone platform.
The angle of elevation of the top of the statue from point A on
the ground is 28 degree. If point A is 8m away from the statue,
find the height of the statue.

3. A squirrel sits at the top a 14-foot-tall tree. He spies a nut

on the ground some distance away. After careful
measurement, he determines that nut is 74 degree away from
the base of his tree. How far away is the nut from the
squirrel?

Uses trigonometric
ratios to solve real-life
problems involving
Right Triangles
1. You are in a hot air balloon flying over long Island when you spot
your house. If the balloon is 1,000 ft in the air, and the distance from
you to your house is 10,000ft what angle of depression are you
looking when you see your house.
2. An airplane is flying at a height of 2 miles above the ground. The
distance along the ground from the airplane to the airport is 5 miles.
What is the angle of depression from the airplane to the airport?
3. The tallest television transmitting tower in the world is in North
Dakota, and it is 2,059 feet tall. If you are on level ground exactly
5,280 feet from the base of the tower, what is your angle of elevation
looking up at the top of the tower?

4. Suppose a tree 26 feet in height casts a shadow of length 164 feet.

What is the angle of elevation from the end of the shadow to the top
of the tree with respect to the ground?
