What is It

Measuring Tools and Instruments

A measuring instrument is a device used to measure actual quantity of an
object. Measurement is the activity in obtaining and comparing the actual
quantities of real-life objects and events in the workspaces.
In the widest reason, mensuration is the process of measurement.
Mensuration is based on algebraic equations and geometric calculations to provide
measurement data regarding the area and volume of a given object or group of
objects. In measuring physical objects, actual results can be obtained, while using
mensuration only estimates can be given.

Measuring Instrument Name Function

Test Light A pocket size tool used to test
the line wire or circuit if there is
current in it.

DIGITAL REPRESENTATION

Within a computer, information is represented and stored in a digital binary

format. The term bit is an abbreviation of binary digit and represents the smallest
piece of data. Humans interpret words and pictures; computers interpret only
patterns of bits.

A bit can have only two possible values, a one digit (1) or a zero digit (0). A bit
can be used to represent the state of something that has two states. For example, a
light switch can be either On or Off; in binary representation, these states would
correspond to 1 and 0 respectively.

Computers used binary codes to represent and interpret letters, numbers and
special characters with bits. A commonly used code is the American Standard Code
for Information Interchange (ASCII). With ASCII, each character is represented by a
string of bits. For example:

Capital letter A = 01000001

Number 9 = 00001001
Special character # = 00100011

Each group of eight bits, such as the representations of letters and numbers,
is known as a byte. Codes can be used to represent almost any type of information
digitally: computer data, graphics, photos, voice, video, music and etc.

Two Ways to Convert Decimal Number to Binary
1. Conversion of Decimal Numbers to Binary Using Division Method
To convert a decimal number to binary, all you have to do is to think of the
highest possible number divisible by 2 but not greater than the given number. Divide
the number by 2. Get the quotient and the remainder after dividing. Bring down the
quotient to the next row, divide it by 2, and get the quotient and remainder again.
Do it repeatedly until the quotient results to 0. Copy the remainder from bottom to
top, and that is the binary equivalent.

Example: 25 (Highest possible number divisible by 2 is 24)

Operation Quotient Remainder

25/2 12 1
12/2 6 0
6/2 3 0
3/2 1 1
1/2 0 1
Answer 25 = 11001
Table 1. Convert Decimal Numbers to Binary

After the computation we need to check if the answer is correct.

Steps in Checking the Binary:

Copy the Remainder from bottom to top. Use the binary result in Table 2 below as
multiplier. Get the decimal value using the binary evaluate then multiply the
binary and the decimal value. Finally, add each product to get the decimal number.

Example:
1 1 0 0 1 multiplier (binary)
16 8 4 2 1 equivalents (decimal value)
16 8 0 0 1 results (binary X decimal value)
16+ 8+ 0 + 0 +1 = 25
1x24=16
1x23=8
0x22=0
0x24=0
1x20=1
= 25

2. Conversion of Decimal Numbers to Binary Using Subtraction Method

To convert a decimal number to binary, first subtract the highest possible

power of two but not more than the given number, and keep subtracting the next
highest possible power from the difference, marking 1’s in each column where this
is possible and 0’s where it is not.

5. Conversion of Decimal Fraction to Binary Number

To convert decimal fraction to binary numbers by following step A-C below:

A) Convert the integral part of decimal to binary equivalent
1. Divide the decimal number by 2 and store remainders in array.
2. Divide the quotient by 2.
3. Repeat step 2 until we get the quotient equal to zero.
4. Equivalent binary number would be reverse of all remainders of step 1.
B) Convert the fractional part of decimal to binary equivalent
1. Multiply the fractional decimal number by 2.
2. Integral part of resultant decimal number will be first digit of fraction binary
number.
3. Repeat step 1 using only fractional part of decimal number and then step 2.
C) Combine both integral and fractional part of binary number.

12 CO_Q0_ICT8_Module4
Let's take an example for n = 4.47 k = 3

Step 1: Conversion of 4 to binary

1. 4/2 : Remainder = 0 : Quotient = 2
2. 2/2 : Remainder = 0 : Quotient = 1
3. 1/2 : Remainder = 1 : Quotient = 0

So equivalent binary of integral part of decimal is 100.

Step 2: Conversion of .47 to binary

1. 0.47 * 2 = 0.94, Integral part: 0
2. 0.94 * 2 = 1.88, Integral part: 1
3. 0.88 * 2 = 1.76, Integral part: 1

So equivalent binary of fractional part of decimal is .011

Step 3: Combined the result of step 1 and 2.

Final answer can be written as:

100 + .011 = 100.011

Examples:
Input: n = 2.47, k = 5

Output: 10.01111

Input: n = 6.986 k = 8

Output: 110.11111100

Calculating Data Storage

While a bit is the smallest representation of data, the most basic unit of digital
storage is the byte. A byte is 8 bits and is the smallest unit of measure (UOM) used
to represent data storage capacity.
When referring to storage space, we use the terms bytes (B), kilobytes (KB),
megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB).

One kilobyte is a little more than one thousand bytes, specifically 1,024. A
megabyte represents more than a million bytes or 1,048,576. A gigabyte is a billion
bytes or 1,073,741,824 bytes. A terabyte is a trillion bytes or 1,099,511,627,776.
The exact number is gained by taking 2^n power.
In general, when something is represented digitally, the greater the detail, the
greater the number of bits needed to represent it. A low-resolution picture from a
digital camera will use around 360KB, and a high-resolution picture could use 2 MB
or more.

13 CO_Q0_ICT8_Module4
Examples of components and devices that use byte storage include: random
access memory (RAM), hard disk drive space, CDs, DVDs, and MP3 players.
CDs have a data storage capacity of approximately 700 MB. DVDs have a data
storage capacity of approximately 4.3 GB on a single-layer disc, and approximately
8.5 GB on a dual-layer disc. BDs have a storage capacity of 25 GB on a single-layer
disc, and 50 GB on a dual-layer disc.

Once we know the size of a file or folder, it is possible to determine the number
of bytes being used. For example:
A file is 20 KB in size

1 KB = 1,024 Bytes

20 * 1,024 = 20,480 bytes in a 20 KB file

If a 20 KB file is stored in a 1 MB folder (1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes of space);
then approximately a total of 51 files can be stored in that folder (1,048,576 / 20,480
= 51.2).
Hence, in converting percentage to binary, you must convert first percentage
to decimal. The decimal way of writing has its own advantages: percentages cannot
be used to express actual numbers, they only work for proportions, and fractions are
quite hard to add up. This is why in our world today we use decimals, fractions and
percentages in an equal measure.

Calculating Data Storage in Fraction and Decimal

If a 3 MB folder stored only 40, 960 bytes in every 20 KB file, what is the
percentage of the space used to the total storage capacity?

1 MB = 1, 048, 576 bytes

3 MB = 1, 048 576 bytes x 3 = 3, 145, 728 bytes total storage capacity

3 MB = 40, 960 bytes / 3, 145, 728 bytes = 1 / 76.8 = 0.013 bytes used of the
total storage capacity
Calculating Data Storage in Percentage

40, 960 bytes / 3, 145, 728 bytes = 0.013 x 100 = 1.3% space used of the 3,
145, 728 bytes which is the total storage capacity.

Proper Handling of Measuring Instruments

http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/shops-storage/
4807-storage-cabinets-planes-tools.html

Measuring instruments, by nature, should be precise and accurate.

There are different tools for measuring different things. Proper handling is
required to be able to have accurate results.

Measuring devices that have not properly handled and not maintained as they
should have been are suitable to be rotten. Your whole job will be ruined because
you didn’t give your tools and equipment the care they deserve.

Caring for your measuring tools will mean that they will serve you well for a
long period of time. Without proper handling for these tools means you will have to
replace them far sooner.

Without precise and accurate functions of measuring tools, you may not be
able to get the job correctly, so it is very important that you keep your tools in best
condition. Some kinds of tools are very sensitive and slight differences in conditions
that can lead them to malfunction and give inaccurate results. It is necessary that
have you follow proper handling and maintenance procedures in all measuring tools.

Steps on how to care the measuring tools

 Always wipe with clean cloth the measuring faces of the tools with the
workspaces. To avoid dust or dirt from damaging your tools. Do not to use
such tools on rough, abrasive surfaces.
 Separate your measuring tools from your hand tools to avoid damaged. Never
lay your tools anywhere because the vibrations could compromise the
accuracy of the tool.
 Always use your tools on their specific uses. This means don't use your
micrometers as a hammers. This will surely damage them.
 Always keep your tools at room temperature. Never lay them on a heat place
or expose to sunlight to maintain their accuracy.

15 CO_Q0_ICT8_Module4
 Always be cautious of laying or using your tools near to a magnet or magnetic
surface because magnets can cause destruction with other precision tools.
 Always clean your tools after use. Those are not stainless steel, you have put
some anti-rust oil on it and then stored by in a dry place.

Lubrication Method

Proper lubrication is important to prevent damage due to corrosion and

oxidation. Wipe the tool with mineral oil using a soft rag or cloth in the entire metal
parts of the tool. Then wipe away any excess oil.

Measuring tools should be cleaned habitually, preferably once a week.

Handling

Proper handling to avoid unintentional damage and use tools correctly can
help to extend their life and ensure accurate results.

Some tools do not have the protection of their cases or storage space, so it’s
essential to handle it carefully. Take care to avoid sudden shocks or irregular
handling such as dropping, throwing or hammering the device against hard surfaces.
Placing rubber mats in workspaces can help protect tools from damage if accidentally
dropped.

It is also important to use only your instruments for their intended uses and
purposes. Never use measuring tools as hammers other objects.

As mentioned earlier, you have to avoid touching instruments that are very
sensitive with your hands, as the moist and oils on your skin can cause corrosion.
For some tools, limit the instances you spend holding it or only touching it at certain
points may be enough. For those very delicate instruments and those you need to
use very often, you can use lint-free gloves or accessories that are made specifically
to handle sensitive instruments.

Another reason to avoid handling measuring tools for long periods of time is
the heat temperature of your body it can cause it to heat up, potentially removing off
the accuracy of the tool. You should also avoid placing it on hot or cold areas.
Throughout the entire process of using the instrument, be sure to place it at the
proper temperature.

Training is vital to ensure proper handling of measuring equipment at all

times. Workers should take enough training for each type of instrument they will use
so that they know how to take accurate measurements without damaging the tools.

Know How to Properly Handle Instruments During Use

Once you handle precise measuring instrument, it is more important to

protect that tool from damage or giving wrong interpretations. There are simple
things you should do to help prevent damage or miscalibration during use.

1. Do not drop, throw, or knock measuring instruments against hard

surfaces.
2. At a workbench, always use rubber mat that can rest on the floor beneath
the edge of the bench. This will help protect your instruments from damage
if accidentally dropped.
3. Never use a measuring instrument to interfere or strike another object.
4. Keep instruments away from extreme temperature. If you are handling a
measuring instrument, it is important to store with a required
temperature.
5. Expansion and contraction can alter the calibration of the instrument, so
it is important to keep it within a normal room temperature range.
6. Avoid holding instruments with your hands for a long period of time and
don't place them on surfaces that are too hot or cold.

Legal Requirements

Some institutions may require you to clean your tools more often depending
on their rules and regulations. For example, food-related businesses must adhere to
higher cleanliness standards.

The Importance of Measuring Tool Maintenance

Why is proper handling of measuring tools important?

1. Increase accuracy: If measuring tools don’t have proper care and

maintenance, they will not give accurate results. Some of these tools take
exact measurements, so small changes can affect the accuracy of
measurements. Different factors can affect the accuracy of a measuring tool,
from improper storage temperature to excessive vibrations to physical damage
due to accidentally or intentionally dropping it. Measuring tools also fall out
of calibration obviously over time, so regular tool calibration is important.

2. Extend life: Proper handling for measuring tools helps extend their life.
With proper care, many measuring instruments can serve you well for a long
time. Improper handling increases the risk of a tool failing in the middle of a
job or slowly becoming less effective, reducing the efficiency and accuracy of
your work.
3. Lower costs: Following the proper handling and maintenance procedures can
help reduce your costs on the long term. It can help you avoid costly failures,
more extensive repairs. It also means you will have to replace your tools less
frequent, meaning you get more money in quality instruments.

Proper Storage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvqNDPSkfUw

Storage is a serious component of measuring tool care, as these devices if

stored long time in cupboards or cabinets they may get damaged. Be sure to follow
proper storage of instruments according to manufacturer’s specifications and
standard operating procedures. Different types of instruments and tools made of
different materials that have different storage requirements.

Many measurement devices have cases and it is important to store your tools
in these cases. If your tool does not have a case, purchase one that meets the storage
requirements of your instrument. Make sure it is the right material, size and shape
and that it has the right features. It is important that the containers will have
packing. For some types of instruments, you have to place them on a clean, dry cloth
inside a case. Keeping your tools in a case helps to protect them from airborne
chemicals and accidental physical damage.

Another essential measure to take to prevent physical damage is to separate

your devices form each other. You can use dividers or cases. Don’t pile devices on
top of each other unless they are inside the cases that will protect them from
damaging each other.

Organize your devices in a cart, tray, inspection station or other location.

Doing so can help make it easier to follow proper storage procedures and enable you
to access your tools more efficiently.

You need to ensure your devices are stored in the proper temperature and
humidity. Be sure to keep the storage area at an appropriate temperature and keep
your devices away from sources of heat, including sunlight. In general, you have to
keep instruments in a cool, dry place, but some devices may also come with more
specific recommendations.

Vibration can cause measuring tools to fall out of calibration, so store your
instruments away from any equipment that may cause vibration or movement.

Below are some tips on how to take care of your tools and store them properly
so that you get optimum use out of them.

18 CO_Q0_ICT8_Module4
 Clean, Inspect and Care for Tools

Make it a habit to clean tools after each use before you return them to storage.
Wipe them down with a rag or old towel and be sure they are free of dust, grease and
debris before you put them into their proper places.

Safety Alerts!

Don’t use tools that need repair or replacement. Broken tools can cause injury.

 Store Tools Properly

A proper storage system is a must for hand tools. A toolbox, storage container,
shelving unit, or a combination of all of these can be used to keep your tools protected
and in peak condition.

Helpful Tips

Use a small tool bag for the tools you use most often such as tools for simple
jobs around the house. The rest of your tool arsenal can remain in your main toolbox.
