Analog Communication Lab Overview

This document provides information about Lab 1 of the course EE-351 Communication Systems. The objectives of the lab are to learn basic principles of analog communication, including message signals, carrier signals, and modulated signals, and to get familiarized with the hardware and software used, including an analog communication board, virtual oscilloscope, and Tie Pie Channel software. The workflow involves understanding hardware, integrating software, observing results, and drawing conclusions. Hardware resources needed are the communication board, FACET unit, power supply, oscilloscope, and generator.

 EXERCISE OBJECTIVE

There are two main objectives of this lab:

 Learning basic principles involved in analogue communication and

learning important concepts such as recognition of message signal,
carrier signal, and modulated signal
 Familiarization of equipment and software “Tie Pie Channel”
 Understanding basics of hardware including Analogue
communication board, F.A.C.E.T. based unit, power supply multi-
meter, virtual oscilloscope, and generator.

 Workflow:
The workflow can be observed easily in the following flow diagram:

 Software Resources:

Following software is required to execute the lab tasks:

o Tie Pie Channel

 Hardware Resources:
Following hardware is required to execute the lab tasks:

o Analogue communication board

o F.A.C.E.T. based unit
o Power supply multi-meter
o Virtual oscilloscope
o Generator

 Observations:
1. Analog Signals are continuous as compared to digital signal are either
high or low.
2. Message signals have low frequencies which range from 20 Hz to 20
KHz.
3. Carrier signals have high frequencies ranging from 10kHz to
10000GHz.
4. Modulation is a process of message signal changing a characteristic of
(amplitude, frequency, or phase) of carrier signal so that message can
be transmitted at higher carrier frequency
5. Analog radio signals are transmitted by conduction through a wire or
radiated through space.
6. In the receiver, demodulation is the process of recovering the message
signal from the modulated carrier wave.
7. Bandwidth of an AM signal is the difference between the highest and
lowest frequencies.
