Midterm 2008

- This 3-page document is the midterm exam for a Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering course from February 2008. - It contains 2 questions - the first asks students to compute the diameter of a coconut cream nozzle on a clown car given flow rates and angles, assuming 1D, incompressible flow. - The second question has two parts: (a) asks students to determine the height difference between two columns in a manometer containing mercury and a special liquid, and (b) asks them to determine the height of a water column added such that the column tops are at the same level.

Question (1)

A clown car is shown below. At the front, there’s a cannon shooting coconut cream,
40 gallons/min in a steady stream. The coconut cream has a specific gravity of 1.14
and the cannon is angled at 60 degrees from the horizontal. At the rear, compressed
air (at 20 0C and 700 kPa, Rair=287J/K.kg) comes out of a nozzle horizontally at a
mass flow rate of 10 grams/sec. The air nozzle diameter is 1 cm. Compute the
diameter of the coconut cream nozzle such that there is no acceleration of the car.
(Hints: There are 3.78 litres per gallon. Assume 1D, incompressible flows.)

Question (2)

(a) The manometer shown below in (a) contains 2 fluids: mercury (SG=13.6)
and a special manometer liquid with SG=1.9. If both ends are open to the
atmosphere, determine the difference in height, D, between the two columns.
(b) Water is added to the right column of the manometer as shown. Determine
the height of the water column, h, such that there is no difference between
the tops of the two columns (D=0).
