AP Calculus AB Grade 11 Curriculum Map 2022 2023

This syllabus outlines an AP Calculus AB course that meets for 5 hours per week over 30 weeks. The course covers topics including limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications. Concepts are taught using graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations. The equivalent of a full year introductory calculus course in college, it aims to help students understand calculus concepts and applications through modeling change and analysis of functions. Student work is evaluated through regular assessments including quizzes, tests, exams, homework and classwork.

Mathematics - AP Calculus AB
5 hours per week, one credit
GRADE 11 Syllabus
Main Source: Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic (3rd edition, Finney, Demana,
Waits, Kennedy)
Barron’s AP* Calculus 15’th Edition

Course Description
AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC focus on students’ understanding of calculus concepts and provide
experience with methods and applications. Through the use of big ideas of calculus (e.g., modeling change,
approximation and limits, and analysis of functions), each course becomes a cohesive whole, rather than a
collection of unrelated topics. Both courses require students to use definitions and theorems to build arguments
and justify conclusions.
The courses feature a multi representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems
expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. Exploring connections among these
representations builds understanding of how calculus applies limits to develop important ideas, definitions,
formulas, and theorems.
College Course Equivalent
AP Calculus AB is designed to be the equivalent of a first semester college calculus course devoted to topics in
differential and integral calculus. AP Calculus BC is designed to be the equivalent to both first and second
semester college calculus courses. AP Calculus BC applies the content and skills learned in AP Calculus AB to
parametrically defined curves, polar curves, and vector-valued functions; develops additional integration
techniques and applications; and introduces the topics of sequences and series.

Chapter objectives and overview:

● Chapter 1 Prerequisites for Calculus - Review of most important things students need to know to
start learning calculus. Introduction to graphing utilities as a tool to investigate mathematical ideas, to
support analytic work, and to solve problems with numerical and graphical methods. The emphasis is
on functions and graphs, the main building block of calculus.
● Chapter 2 Limits and Continuity- In the chapter students learn how to define and calculate limits of
a function values. Students will use substitution, graphical investigation, numerical approximation,
algebra, or some combinations to find the limits.
● Chapter 3 Derivatives - Students will learn how to find the slope of a tangent to a curve as a limit of
the slope of a secant line and concentrate on understanding what derivatives are and how they work.
● Chapter 4 Applications of Derivatives - Students will learn how to draw conclusion from derivatives
about the extreme values of a function and about the general shape of a functions graph. They will
understand how a tangent line captures the shape of a curve near the point of tangency. Students will
learn Mean value Theorem and its use.
● Chapter 5 The Definite Integral- Students will learn about estimating with finite sums sets the
foundation for understanding integral calculus, properties of definite integral , Mean Value theorem
and connection between differential and Integral Calculus
● Chapter 6 Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling- In the chapter analytical, graphical
and numerical techniques are examined on which different function related predictions are based.
● Chapter 7 Applications of Definite Integrals - In this chapter students will focus more closely on
the underlying modeling steps: how to set up the function to be integrated.
● Chapter 8 Sequences, L’Hopital’s Rule and Improper Integrals- Students will get introduced with
sequences to later study infinite series. They will learn about Limit of a Sequence, use of L’Hopital’s
Rule.
● Chapter 9 Infinite Series (BC only) - Students will discover the calculus of infinite series and will
return to the crucial question of convergence.
● Chapter 10 Parametric, Vector, and Polar Functions (BC only) - In this chapter students will apply
their understanding of single-variable calculus in three kings of two-variable context, enabling them to
analyze some new kinds of curves and motion in the plane that does not proceed along a straight line.
