7. RESULT

7.1 Senipah – RUV Balikpapan Pipeline Simulation Results

7.1.1 Base Case

The transient simulation for steady state operation was performed to determine the pressure
fluctuation, liquid hold-up, operation slugging that potential to be occurred and FCV operation
to control designated flowrate. The following section discuss the result from the stable
operation condition of the three (3) different flowrate case (6, 75, 125 MMSCFD) during
mminimum and maximum pressure (min. 681.5 psig and max. 725 psig).
Base Case 6 MMSCFD
The simulation result of base case at 6 MMSCFD are shown in the following figure.

From figure above, observed that the pressure during steady state condition at pressure
supply 681.5 psig and 725 psig, the pressure is stable pressure at 16” pipeline, 20” pipeline
and RUV pipeline. The liquid holds up and accumulated liquid is not present at the 20”
pipeline which means slugging issue at the pipeline is not expected during the operation
case.

Base Case 75 MMSCFD

The simulation result of base case at 75 MMSCFD are shown in the following figure.

From figure above, observed that the pressure during steady state condition at pressure
supply 681.5 psig and 725 psig, the pressure is stable at 16” pipeline, 20” pipeline and RUV
pipeline. The liquid holds up and accumulated liquid is not present at the 20” pipeline which
means slugging issue at the pipeline is not expected during the operation case.

Base Case 125 MMSCFD

As explained at section 6.2.1 that the inlet pressure for 125 MMSCFD is 800 psig. The
simulation result of base case at 125 MMSCFD are shown in the following figure.

Figure 7- 5 Simulation Result Base Case 125 MMSCFD 800 psig

Observed from picture above, the pressure of 16” pipeline, 20” pipeline and RUV pipeline are
stable. The flowrate is decrease because the initial pressure set at 800 psig then while the
control valve regulating, the flowrate is decreasing until reach set point 125 MMSCFD. During
process, there are no liquid hold up and accumulated liquid observed at 20” pipeline so that
it is expected there are no slugging during the steady state operation.

7.1.2 Ramp Up
During ramp up operation, the FCV at Senipah having important role to control the flowrate
of sales gas. As explained before on section 6.3 about the FCV control philosophy, the
flowrate profile during the ramp up operation shown in the figure below.

Figure 7- 6 Simulation Result Ramp Up FCV Operation

It is observed from figure above that the operation of FCV is smooth enough, there are no
fluctuation during regulating process. The flowrate also the same, there are fluctuation on
flowrate of gas. The flowrate smoth following the ramping up set point. The result of setting
FCV are shown in the table below.
Table 7- 1 FCV Operation Control

During the 100% opening, the FCV is regulating to 125 MMSCFD but could not reach it and
stop at 115 MMSCFD because insufficient pressure supply.
Then to investigate the pressure, liquid hold up and slugging at the pipeline, it can be
observed at the figure below.

During the ramp up process, the pressure is quite stable. During FCV set to 125 MMSCFD,
the pressure at RUV Balikpapan increase because the FCV fully open to chase the flowrate
set point and result in increase of pressure (615 psig). There is no liquid hold up and
accumulated liquid at 20” pipeline so the slugging issue is not expected during ramp up
operation.

7.1.3 Pigging
Pigging operation shall comply with velocity criteria 1-4 m/s. To achieve velocity criteria, it is
simulated at 75 MMSCFD and the result shown in the table below.

From figure above, the pig launch at 5000s and receive at 31110s or the pigging duration is
about 7.2 hours. The velocity average is 2.9 m/s and comply with velocity criteria.
The pressure profile at pig launcher & receiver and accumulated liquid at pig receiver shown
in the figure below.

Figure 7- 9 Simulation Result Pigging Pressure Profile at Launcher and Receiver and Accumulated
Liquid Profile at Receiver

At the moment of pig launch, there is peak pressure at pig launcher. The peak pressure is
660.4 psig and below pipe design pressure. Then during the receiving at pig receiver, the
pressure only raises to 606 psig and the decrease along with the receive of pig. There is no
surge pressure during the pigging and the pressure is quite stable. No accumulated liquid is
observed during the pigging.

7.1.4 Valve Fail to Open

During the operation, valve could be failed to open to adapt with higher set point flowrate and
it could lead to upset process at the downstream (RUV Balikpapan). To investigate it, the
simulation is performed to deal with this incident. Below is the figure of FCV that fail to adjust
the flowrate from 54 to 75 MMSCFD.

From figure above, the flowrate changes at 5000s from 54 to 75 MMSCFD. The increasing
of flowrate result in decreasing of pressure at RUV Balikpapan. It is indicated that if the valve
fails to open then the pressure to RUV Balikpapan will decrease. The pressure profile
describes on the table below.

7.1.5 Pipeline Packing

Packing of pipeline happen if there is a blockage on flowrate that can be caused by sudden
closure of valve. During the packing simulation, the Flow Control Valve at Senipah Facility is
regulating to control the flow following the actual operation. The result of pipeline packing
explained in the section below.

Form the table above, observed that after the valve close, the flowrate at RUV-Balikpapan is
oscillating then become stable after a period of time at no flow condition. Comparing with
pressure, there are no significant change in pressure during the flow oscillating period.
Need to note that the Flow Control Valve is operating during the packing process to control
the flowrate. While the valve is closing, it can be seen that the FCV opening is increase to
adjust the flowrate then stuck at fully open condition. The operating of control valve is smooth
to regulate the flow.
With the closure of valve, the pressure at upstream valve is increasing to reach the supplied
pressure while the pressure at downstream valve is remain the same and stable because the
FCV operate to control the flowrate. No surge pressure is observed in the simulation so the
surge pressure is not expected to be happen during packing process.

The oscillating flowrate is quite stable and faster to reach stable condition. Comparing with
pressure, there are no significant change in pressure during the flow oscillating period. The
flowrate is decreasing slower when the SDV at upstream side of 20” pipeline is close rather
than at downstream side. The flowrate at RUV-Balikpapan drop significantly fast when the
SDV at the downstream side of 20” pipeline is close.
The Flow Control Valve is operating during the packing process to control the flowrate. While
the valve is closing, it can be seen that the FCV opening is increase to adjust the flowrate
then stuck at fully open condition. The operating of control valve is smooth to regulate the
flow.

Generally, the available response time is increasing by the increase of flowrate. When SDV-
209 located at out Balikpapan Facility is sudden close, the minimum available response time
varies from 42-38 seconds. It is better to apply the interlock system if this upset condition
happen to minimize the impact to RUV Balikpapan process. The phenomena are similar at
SDV-201 & LBCV-108, the available response time is very short below 4 minutes so it is
necessary to apply the interlock system at RUV Balikpapan process. It is very different while
the SDV at upstream side of 20” pipeline is close. The available response time is long enough
ranging from 400 – 6000 seconds.
Observed from maximum pressure result of the table above, the maximum pressure is
ranging from 724 – 728 psig. The packing operations are safe to be performed because the
maximum pressure is below the 20” pipeline and 16” pipeline design pressure.

8. CONCLUSION

The conclusion of each case summarized in the table below.

Table 8- 1 Overall Summary of Simulation Result
Senipah - RUV Balikpapan Pipeline
Base Case During the base case, the flowrate and pressure is stable. No surgepressure,
liquid hold up and slugging is observed during steady state operation. The
normal operation considered as safe operation.
Ramp Up During ramp up process, the FCV is smooth while regulating the flowrate. No
surge pressure, liquid hold up and slugging is observed during ramp up
operation and considered as safe operation.
Pigging The optimum flowrate for pigging operation is 75 MMSCFD comply with
velocity criteria. From simulation result concluded that no slug and liquid hold
up is observed. The pressure and flowrate are stable during pigging
operation.
FCV Fail to While the FCV fail to adjust the flowrate, there is ~6 minutes available time
Open to deal with this incident before the pressure fall to 95% set pressure at RUV
Balikpapan. The available response time is quite enough for operator to
response the incident by manual override to operate the standby FCV.
Pipeline During valve sudden closure, there are no surge pressure at the pipelines.
Packing The operation is considered as safe.
PPA - BEM 42” Pipeline
Sudden During the worst condition, the available HIPPS reaction time before the
Closure pressure reach design pressure is 521 second or around 8 minutes.
GOV-0742 Comparing with previous HIPPS report [Ref. 16, page 41], the available
response time (521 s) is safe if it is considered with HIPPS response time as
per datasheet (3s).
Sudden During the closure of SDV-115 at Pertagas Tie-in, the operating pressure
Closure raise from 50.2 to 51.9 barg. No surge pressure is observed so the closing
SDV-115 SDV-115 operation is safe that the maximum pressure is below design
pressure (92.7).
