PERFORMANCE DIRESTIONS
1 Four mallets held throughout (except in 2nd etude)
preferable of uniform hardness at any one time. Sticking
suggestions are sometimes given, notated as follows:

2. The attacks of all freshly articulated 2, 3, or four-note
rolled sonorities should be simultaneous’ between all the
pitches (mallets) involved (see Ist etude, and Book Two
etudes throughout) .
3 Accidentals carry, individually in each octave, throughout
‘each measure:
a) for each hand separately when notated on separate staffs.
b) for all cases when within a single staff.
4 The ‘let vibrate’ indication, notated on any note value
( oor L etc.) should imply,'in particular, a ringing sound-
concept and stroke.
5 In general, normal accents ( F ) should be played within, the
dynamic range of the given context, and heavy accents () )
and sforzandi, etc., should be projected above the same;' at
times to forma 3-iayered texture (see 2nd etude).
6 The indicati mn é means to play that individual note with a
“dead stroke" (leaving the mallet pressed against the bar).5 Etudes for Marimba
