UTEW 311: Assignment A

Date and time of submission:

05 April 2023 @ 23:30


Very important information (read carefully):
● You must CHOOSE only one option.

Minimum requirements:
● You must upload group work evidence under the special “Group work evidence” tab in
the Assignment tool. Failure to submit group evidence will result in a 0 for Assignment A.
● You must participate in peer assessment. You are expected to be able to assess any
one of the five options of assignments - the system will randomly distribute
assessments. Failure to complete the peer assessment process result in a 0 for
Assignment A for the entire group. Peer assessment will help you meet several module
assessment criteria, graduate attributes, and study unit outcomes (see purpose below).
This module focuses and critical thinking and reasoning. Therefore, you must be able to
critically and constructively engage with peers.
● If you fail to complete the three comment sections in the peer assessment rubric, a
penalty of 30% will apply.
Purpose:
● This assignment is structured so that certain module assessment criteria, graduate
attributes, and Study Unit outcomes can be assessed (please see a separate document
purpose of assessment to view these)

Choose ONLY ONE of the following:


Option 1 (Study Unit 1)
Create an infographic for teachers to help them distinguish between logical empiricism and
critical rationalism. Your infographic should include at least three fallacies to help teachers
identify false arguments.
Specific instructions:
● Research and understand the tenets of logical empiricism and critical rationalism.
● Identify and describe three fallacies to help teachers identify false arguments.
● Create an infographic that clearly and concisely presents the differences between logical
empiricism and critical rationalism.
● Ensure that the infographic includes visual elements that enhance the presentation of
information.

● Ensure that the infographic includes citations for any sources used.
● Ensure that the infographic contains clear and concise descriptions

OR

Option 2 (Study Unit 1)


Create a 4-5 minute podcast or video that explains logical empiricism and critical rationalism to
a novice in the field. Your podcast or video should also explain how these concepts relate to
education.
Specific instructions:
1. Conduct research on logical empiricism and critical rationalism and their application in
education.
2. Create a script for a podcast or video that explains the following:
-What are logical empiricism and critical rationalism?
-How do these concepts relate to education?
-What are the benefits of using logical empiricism and critical rationalism in education?
-Provide examples of how logical empiricism and critical rationalism can address
complex problems in education.
3. Record a podcast or video that clearly explains logical empiricism, critical rationalism,
and their application in education.
4. Submit the podcast or video on eFundi.
5. Videos are limited to 5 minutes and need to be compressed using Handbrake (a video
compression tool that can be downloaded and used for free)

OR

Option 3 (Study Unit 2)


Create an A4 collage that visually represents one of the four trends in African philosophy: Ethnic
philosophy, philosophic sagacity, nationalist-ideological philosophy, or professional philosophy
(see Study Unit 2.4 in the eGuide). Your collage should incorporate various images, quotes, and
symbols that illustrate the key tenets and values of your chosen trend. You can make the
collage digitally or with real paper and pictures. If you make a 3D collage, please take a photo of
the collage to upload on eFundi.

Once you have completed your collage, write a 200-word reflection that analyses how the visual
elements in your collage relate to the chosen trend in African philosophy. You should consider
questions such as: What themes and motifs emerge from your collage? How do these themes
relate to the principles of your chosen trend? What insights did you gain about the trend from
creating the collage? How might these insights inform your teaching practice in the future?

OR

Option 4 (Study Unit 2)
Create a 4-5 minute podcast or video that explains authentic dialogue or discussions of
decolonisation in education to a novice in the field. Your podcast or video should also explain
how these concepts relate to education.
Specific instructions:
1. Conduct research on either authentic dialogue or discussions of decolonisation in
education and its application to education.
2. Create a script for a podcast or video that explains the following:
-What is an authentic dialogue in the context of African philosophy, or what is
decolonisation?
-How do these concepts relate to education?
-What are the benefits of using authentic dialogue or decolonisation in a classroom?
-Provide examples of how an authentic dialogue or decolonisation can address complex
problems in education.
3. Record the podcast or video and submit the podcast or video on eFundi. The video must
be limited to 5 minutes and compressed using Handbrake (video compression tool that
can be downloaded and used for free)

General instructions

1. This is a group assignment. Complete the assignment in groups of 4-5 members.


2. Each group must think about a group name, and it must be indicated on the front page in
the case of option 2 or 4. If you made a video, the group name must be on the first
screen. In the case of the Podcast, you must start your podcast with saying your group
name.
3. Add only the student number of students that contributed to the assignment on the cover
page (option 1 or option 3) or on the first screen of the video (option 2 or 4). Remember
no student names must be written on the assignment.
4. Save the assignment according to the chosen option and the group leader’s student
number. E.g. UTEW311_AssA_Option1_26558330.
5. Do an informal self-assessment before submitting. Use the rubric provided with the
assignment and make sure that your assignment meets all the requirements.
6. Save your assignment in the desired file format.
7. When your assignment is ready to be assessed, ONLY ONE MEMBER of your group
MUST upload it to eFundi. This must not be done later than 5 April 2022 @ 23:55 under
the ‘Assignments’ tab.
8. Assignments in English MUST be submitted on eFundi under the ‘Assignments’ tab with
the heading Assignment A.
9. No assignments will be accepted by email or as a hard copy.
10. Assignments will be evaluated according to the rubric in the ‘Assignments’ tab.
11. After peers have assessed your group assignment, your lecturer will moderate at least
10% of the assignments in addition to irregular marks observed. After moderation, your
marks will be released on eFundi; you will receive a notification. You will receive the
average of the marks allocated by peer assessors. If a lecturer moderated an
assignment, you would get the mark indicated by the lecturer. The lecturer has the final

say over a mark and may adjust a mark accordingly using the rubric. After receiving the
notice, you will be able to see your assignment mark and feedback from the assessors
on eFundi. You will also be given a chance to ask for a re-mark if your assignment has
not been accurately assessed – provided you provide detailed reasons along in line
with the rubric for review of the mark. When applying for a re-mark, only the final
mark of the lecturer will be considered.

Group work evidence


Failure to submit group evidence will result in 0% for this assignment.
You must organise yourself into groups of five members each. Each member must take up one
of the following roles during meetings (Career Guide, 2023):
1. Facilitator: “Initiators contribute ideas and suggestions for resolving problems within the group.
They listen closely to what other team members say and use the information they gather to
propose alternative solutions. Initiators also gather information from old ideas to find new
solutions to important or recurring issues. People in the initiator role tend to be highly vocal
and proactive in their duties. They drive change and encourage others to take action.”
2. Arbitrator: “Arbitrators function primarily as observers. They monitor interactions and progress
within the group and may attempt to intercede to prevent conflict. If they sense a
misunderstanding, they offer to clarify both sides for the team members involved. Arbitrators
contribute to team success by making sure every member can express their perspective,
offering praise to all members, providing a neutral perspective for issues and improving team
morale.”
3. Note taker: “Notetakers have the critical role of recording team meetings and maintaining
documentation of group activities. They record important points team members make, data,
updates, changes and other important ideas and decisions. Then, they organize the meeting
minutes and distribute them to team members. Their notes help keep the team working toward
the same goal and ensure everyone has the information they need to complete their tasks.”
4. Critic: “The critic encourages others on their team to consider all sides of an idea or argument
before concluding. They discourage the group thought mentality, where team members agree
with each other simply because they feel like everyone else is doing it.”
5. Evaluator: “Evaluators measure the team's progress in working toward the group objective.
They communicate with individual members and the entire team to validate the completion of
their tasks and make sure everyone agrees on roles and expectations. They also use the
information they gather from members to determine if the team should change tasks or
deadlines to accomplish their objectives. Evaluators understand the important key
performance indicators for measuring each team member's success and progress.”
What the team (especially the facilitator and note taker) must do:
● In the first team meeting, you must assign the roles above to each person. A group
contract must be set up and signed.
● You must keep a record of team meetings and or WhatsApp group discussions.
● All the academic sources consulted must be made available to each team member.
● All the notes made on academic sources must be recorded.
● If an AI was consulted, provide screenshots of the conversation with AI to all group
members.

● When the assignment is finished, the team must evaluate each member using the 2023-
03 UTEW 311 Informal group assessment rubric.
● Each group leader must complete a google form (it will be available through eFundi
announcements) to indicate who the group members are. This must be done BEFORE 24
March. This information is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, because it will determine if you will
get a mark or not. In this form you will also be expected to fill in your group name.
Apart from the individual roles, the duties of each member are the following:
● Find at least two academic sources related to the team’s topic.
● Make a summary of the two academic sources.
● Participate in each team meeting.
● Provide critical comments on the final draft of the assignment.
● Write a summary of what you did in the assignment (e.g., I was responsible for designing
the layout of the info graphic. I summarised two sources and made critical comments on
the final product. And so on…)
● Write a reflection (150 words) on what you learned about research through participating
in your group.

Documents that must be uploaded under group work evidence by 05 April 2023 (@23:30)
on eFundi:
● Group contract
● Record of team meetings and WhatsApp group communication.
● All the academic sources (including YouTube video links) and notes were made about the
sources used for the assignment.
● Screenshots of communication with AIs (when applicable)
● Individual summaries (compiled into one document) state what the person did in the team and
individual reflections on what they learned through group participation.
● The 2023-03 UTEW 311 Informal group assessment rubric on members’ collaboration during
group work.

Peer assessment instructions


1. The group member who submitted Assignment A will receive two peer assignments from
two random students who submitted on behalf of a group at 01:00 AM on 7 April 2023
under the 'Assignments' tab under the heading: Assignment A on eFundi. Please note, if
you worked individually, you must still assess two assignments. If more than one member
submitted your assignment, you MUST assess all assignments your group members
received.

2. Use the rubric you downloaded when you completed your assignment to assess the
assignments assigned to you.
3. Each assignment you assess must have its own rubric.
4. Assess the assignments together - see this as a learning opportunity. You can reflect on
what you learned in the process for personal gain.
5. Be honest in assessing the groups' peer assignments and give them fair marks.
6. If your assessment were unfair because you neglected the task, you would forfeit 50% of
your assignment mark.
7. When you have completed the assessment, the group leader must follow these steps:
STEP 1: Open eFundi, click on your UTEW 311 site.
STEP 2: Go to the Assignments tab
STEP 3: Go to the heading Assignment A'.
STEP 4: Click on the student whose work you have assessed.
STEP 5: Type your assigned mark for the assignment in the space provided.
STEP 6: Upload the rubric file on which you indicated the groups' marks and comments.
STEP 7: Make 100% sure you have attached the correct rubric and inserted the correct marks
STEP 8: When you have completed the above steps, make sure you click on Submit.
Complete and submit the peer assessment no later than 14 April 2023 @ 23:55.

When the feedback is submitted on eFundi, the group leader (or a person appointed by the
group leader) must fill in a groogle form which will be shared through eFundi announcements. In
this google form you will be expected to copy the comments on the rubric to a space provided in
the google form.
