SECTION D
The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal
choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each.
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
29. The phenomenon is studied in condensed matter physics, solid state, and
quantum chemistry to draw inferences about the properties of atoms, molecules
and solids. The effect has found use in electronic devices specialized for light
detection and precisely timed electron emission. Emission of conduction electrons
from typical metals requires a few electron-volt (eV) light quanta, corresponding to
short-wavelength visible or ultraviolet light. In extreme cases, emissions are
induced with photons approaching zero energy, like in systems with negative
electron affinity and the emission from excited states, or a few hundred keV
photons for core electrons in elements with a high atomic number.

2. Give the equation for photoelectric effect.
3. Calculate the energy of one mole of photons of radiation whose frequency is
5 x1014Hz. (h=6.626 x 10-34 Js-1)

30. The periodic table of chemical elements, often called the periodic table,
organizes all discovered chemical elements in rows (called periods) and columns
(called groups) according to increasing atomic number. Scientists use the periodic
table to quickly refer to information about an element, like atomic mass and
chemical symbol. The periodic table’s arrangement also allows scientists to discern
trends in element properties, including electronegativity, ionization energy, and
atomic radius. Many scientists worked on the problem of organizing the elements,
but Dmitri Mendeleev published his first version of the periodic table in 1869, and
is most often credited as its inventor.
