I. RATIONALE

Cleanliness is one of the keys to maintain the beauty of our beaches. As per the
World Bank reports, the garbage waste generated in the Philippines reaches a
staggering 11,953 tons per day, 21 million metric tons each year and only about 30%
of these were recycled based on 2019-2021 statistics. Majority of these
discarded wastes, end up in the ocean, harms animal and human health, deteriorate
habitats for organisms and such cons. Although numerous waste management
programs have been run by the LGUs and other management companies, at least 40%
out of a hundred, lessened by the aimed recovery goal (SEA Circular, 2020) by 2030,
still affects and might worsen the current situation of the community. Another effect of
having unclean environment is during the typhoons the scattered garbage on the roads
are flashed going to the different bodies of water such as rivers and beaches that pollute
the water.
This project will focus on developing eco-friendly bamboo trashcans that will help
to reduce the increasing number of wastes. Lack of nearer trash bins is one of the factors
contributing to the dispersed nature of garbage in People’s Park - Baybay, Roxas City,
which is why we started this initiative. This place is a popular hangout area for people
where there are a variety of food stalls selling foods and drinks which is one of the
major sources of trash. If we have visible trash bins near the road, we may lessen the
garbage that will be scattered in the seaside. We respectfully suggest making bamboo
trash cans and placing them along the roads while positioning the garbage cans on their
designated locations. Why bamboo-made instead of purchasing ready-made trash cans
available in the market? Bamboo serves as a perfect alternative for plastic because it
can biodegrade completely and the other beneficial characteristics it offers such as
durability, elasticity and strength. Moreover, we will not worry about our carbon
footprint when we purchase bamboo because bamboo is a very sustainable crop: a fast-
growing grass, it requires no fertiliser and self-regenerates from its own roots, so it
doesn't need to be replanted.
Along the route from Gabuan, Dumulog to People’s Park – Baybay, Roxas City, we
will also conduct a coastal clean-up drive.
