MEE Fluid Mechanics

Assignment 2
Deadline: 06/11/23

1. The tank is filled with water. (a) Determine the resultant force acting on the triangular plate
A and the location of the center of pressure, measured from the top of the tank, (b)
Determine the resultant force acting on the trapezoidal plate C and the location of the center
of pressure, measured from the top of the tank.

2. For the window shown below, find the resultant force on the gate and the location of the
center of pressure. Consider 𝛾 = 9810 N/m3 .
3. The Gate AB in the figure below is 1.2 m long and 0.8 m into the paper. Neglecting
atmospheric pressure, compute the force F on the gate and the distance X from point A to
the center-of-pressure.

4. Determine the new differential reading along the inclined leg of the mercury manometer
below, if the pressure in pipe A is decreased 10 kPa and the pressure in pipe B remains
unchanged. The fluid in A has a specific gravity of 0.9 and the fluid in B is water.
5. A structure is attached to the ocean floor as shown in the figure below. A 2-m-diameter
hatch is located in an inclined wall and hinged on one edge. Determine the minimum air
pressure, p1, within the container that will open the hatch. Neglect the weight of the hatch
and friction in the hinge. Take 𝛾 = 10. 1x103 N/m3 .

6. Draw the FBD diagram for the figure below and determine the horizontal and vertical
components of reaction at the hinge A and also determine the horizontal normal reaction at
B caused by the water pressure. The gate has a width of 3 m.
7. The parabolic and flat plates are pin connected at A, B, and C. They are submerged in
water at the depth shown. Draw the FBD diagram and determine the horizontal and vertical
components of reaction at pin B. The plates have a width of 4 m.

8. The bent plate is 1.5 m wide and is pinned at A and rests on a smooth support at B.
Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at A and the vertical reaction
at the smooth support B for equilibrium. The fluid is water.
9. Water in the reservoir is used to control the water pressure in the pipe at A. If h = 200 mm,
determine this pressure when the mercury is at the elevation shown. Take 𝑆𝐺𝐻𝑔 = 13.55
Neglect the diameter of the pipe.

10. The curved and flat plates are pin connected at A, B, and C. They are submerged in water
at the depth shown. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at pin B.
The plates have a width of 4 m.
