Southeast Asian: Arts and Crafts

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify the elements of art and crafts in Southeast Asian Arts
2. Differentiate the Southeast Asian Arts
3. Appreciate the contribution of Southeast Asian art

• Teacher will be asking a question about the previous lesson
• Teacher will be discussing the characteristics of arts and crafts of Southeast Asian
countries
4. Motivation
• Teacher will show a picture that represents the Southeast Asian countries
• The students will try to guess what country does each picture represent

A. Analysis
• Why is it important to know the differences, similarities and uniqueness of Southeast
Asian Arts?
• How can knowing the Southeast Asian Arts contribute to countries culture?

B. Abstraction
The teacher will be discussing the following:
1. THAILAND
• Sky lantern
2. LAOS
• Sa paper
3. VIETNAM
• Silk Painting
4. INDONESIA
• Wayang-kulit
5. SINGAPORE
• Merlion
6. MALAYSIA
• Wau kite
7. BRUNEI
• Sangkok

C. Application
Based on the lesson, group yourself into 5 groups consist of 7 members. In a 1 whole
sheet of paper, choose two Southeast Asia arts and craft and create a Venn diagram that
shows its similarities and differences.
D. Assessment
IDENTIFICATION: Give the appropriate answer for each question.
1. The most popular festival held on the 12th full moon, usually in November.
2.One of the most popular form of art in Vietnam.
3. A cap widely worn in Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, the Southern Philippines
and Southern Thailand.
4. A puppet show lay perform around the Indo- Malayan archipelago, tracing its origin in
India.
5. It is a uniquely designed Malaysian kite. Its wings are similar to an Arabic letter
pronounced WOW.

 Sky Lanterns-are used during for
festivals. Also commonly called as wish
lantern. The most popular festival held
on the 12th full moon, usually in
November. It is made out of rice paper
with a bamboo frame, which contain a

 Wayang Kulit- is a puppet show play
performed around the Indo-Malayan
archipelago, tracing its origin in India.
Wayang in modern Indonesian language

5. SINGAPORE
 Merlion- a fish-like body symbolizes
Singapore’s origins as a fishing village,
known as Temasek. The statue’s head
represents the city’s original name of
Singapura (lion city in Sanskrit)

6. MALAYSIA
 Wau Kite- is a uniquely designed
Malaysian Kite. Its wings are similar to
an Arabic letter (pronounced WOW).
Famers used kites as scarecrows in the
fields and as a means to lull their
children to sleep, so they could work
with a little interruption.

7. BRUNEI
 Songkok_ is a cap widely worn in
Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore,
